Haircare Review: Phil Smith Be Gorgeous Dry Clean Revitalising Dry Shampoo

Phil Smith Be Gorgeous Dry Clean Revitalising Dry Shampoo (75ml, £2.99, link)

I received this bright pink, handbag-friendly can of dry shampoo by Phil Smith in last month's Joliebox.  I have a serious love/hate relationship with aerosol dry shampoos, so how well did this one perform for me?

The main thing to consider when trying out dry shampoos of any nature, is the golden rule of "try, try and try again", when it comes to application.  Some dry shampoos are simply rubbish and will do absolutely nothing for your greasy mop.   Others however will do their job well, but require a little patience and practice at first.  Phil Smith's Be Gorgeous Dry Clean Revitalising Dry Shampoo certainly falls into that latter category.

The good points: It works!  It refreshes hair with a relatively pleasant (it's your typical mainstream hair salon type) scent and absorbs all of the grease from your roots.  I was really impressed by this and would say that it's works much better for me than Batiste does.

The not so good points:  You really have the get the application right otherwise you're heading straight to grey roots-ville.  It's very easy to overdo it and the main trick is to make sure you massage the spray formula into your roots straight away.  If you leave it too long between spraying and massaging, it kinda sticks to your hair instead and will leave you completely grey!

This is probably not so much an issue for those with fair hair, but if you're not, you're going to need to invest in some trial and error time.  Here are some of my application tips:-

1.  Give the can a really good shake (it makes an almighty rattling sound btw!) - this helps to mix the product up so you get more of an even spray.
2.  Lift the hair up in sections with a brush that you want to 'dry clean'.  Holding the can 20cm (or thereabouts) from your hair, give it a quick overall blast in one go.  I found that if I tried to do it in lots of short blasts, it was a lot harder to massage it all in and just made me grey.
3.  Massage into your roots STRAIGHT AWAY!
4.  Give your hair a good all over brush through and you're good to go.

Ultimately, I do find this dry shampoo a hassle to use, especially when I'm running late in the mornings - I don't wanna be worrying about grey roots!  I'll use up the can I have, but it's highly unlikely I'll ever repurchase it.  This dry shampoo is much more suited to those who don't long commutes or who have light hair.  My quest for a HG dry shampoo sadly continues.

Have you used this?  What did you think?

  1. I have a love/hate relationship with dry shampoo. I love getting an extra day before having to wash my hair but my scalp goes mad with itch. I'm almost finished my Batiste so might try this one next. Great review.

    1. I know that itchy feeling :( In an ideal world my hair would probably like to be washed every day but I don't think it's good to do that. Plus my hair is so long that it takes me forever to dry and style it - far too much maintenance!
Let me know what you think if you try this one :) x

  2. Haven't tried this and I am hesitant to do so. Application (in my opinion) should be simple...especially for the "hair challenged" like me who straighten their locks for a real occasion! :P

    Wonderful review Evelyn :)

    1. I agree, I think for a dry shampoo you want it to just work and do its thing without too much fuss! xx

  5. Thanks for the tips, I've seen this in the shops a few times and considered buying it as my batiste isn't cutting it with my (recently dyed) darker hair :s
