10 Films List

(1) Tangled (2010)
I'm a sucker for Disney princess films, and recently bought Tangled on Blu-Ray.  It's loosely based on the old Rapunzel fairy tale, and is a very cute heart-warming film to watch with kids, or when you're having a cosy night in painting your nails.

(2) Killer Joe (2011)
I know so many people who have been raving about this and describing it as a 'Texan Reservoir Dogs', but I thought the story was pretty poor.  It just seemed to come across like one of those films that uses violence for the sake of violence, without much thought or meaning to it.

(3) The Awakening (2011)
Creepy British horror film about a sceptical supernatural writer who goes to investigate the spooky goings on at a boys boarding school.  Has a nice twist at the end.

(4) American Beauty (1999)
Oh how I love American Beauty.  If you haven't watched it a million times like me already, then find a copy and see it straight away.

(5) Attack Of The Werewolves (2011)
Spanish horror film with English subtitles - so funny!  If you like silly horror films that are more humour than horror,  you'll love this one.

(6) Gattaca (1997)
Sci-fi with Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke and Jude Law.   In the future genetic engineering rules everything and who you'll become / how successful you will be in life, is pre-determined whilst you'll still in the womb.  Quite scary when you think about it!

(7) Oldboy (2003)
Disturbing but utterly compelling South Korean thriller with an enormous (and even more disturbing) twist at the end.  Falls strongly into that, 'What the hell did I just watch?!' category.  An American remake of it comes out next year, so make sure to watch the original soon before the hype and spoilers start appearing everywhere.  Thanks to Lisa for recommending this :)

 (8) Stake Land (2010)
Post-apocalyptic movie where vampires and vicious gangs have now taken over.  A vampire hunter known only as Mister, is training a young orphan boy how to survive, as they make their way through America's heartland to a place called New Eden.

(9) The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)
I absolutely love anime, so when Sam recommended this, I put it on my Lovefilm list straight away.  It's a mad sci-fi romance where a schoolgirl called Makoto finds that she can leap back and forth through time one day, but she doesn't realise that there might be consequences to her rampant time-travelling.  Really enjoyed it and the ending gives you some food for thought.

(10) The Tournament (2009)
Action thriller starring Robert Carlyle, Kelly Hu and Ian Somerhalder.  Every couple of years, a tournament is hosted for the entertainment of some of the world's wealthiest businessmen.  The players are all trained assassins and the winner is the person who's still alive at the end.  It's the kind of film you'd watch with a cider and a pizza, but you guessed that already ;)

What was the last film that you watched?  Any recommendations?

  8. I saw Killer Joe in the cinema, there were just three other people in the screening and one guy loved it to the extent he stood up and applauded it at the end - I couldn't believe we were watching the same film! It was interesting to see Matthew McConaughey do something so very different but it was incredibly uncomfortable to watch. But then I suppose so was Old Boy, but in a very different way!
I haven't yet seen the Girl Who Leapt Through Time but keep your eyes peeled for 'Wolf Children' by the same director, it was absolutely lovely

    1. That guy sounds like one of my friends who has been raving about it constantly since seeing it - I agree that it was really uncomfortable to watch at times.
Will definitely look into Wolf Children thanks :) x

  9. So glad you enjoyed Oldboy!! I don't know why the Americans feel the need to re-make a film which is already so fantastic. They'll never do it justice! X
