Let the 100 Day Spending Ban commence!

Monday, 7 January 2013

I was planning to do the 100 Day Spending Ban at the end of the month, but after chatting with a friend over far too many glasses of wine last night, I've decided to start it today.  As everyone's rules and goals are different to adapt to their own situations and reasons for doing the ban, I thought I'd outline mine below:-

For 100 days I will NOT be buying any of the following so:-
- NO Beauty products!
- NO CDs/DVDs/Books or Magazines
- NO Clothes, Shoes, Bags or Accessories
- NO shop bought lunches, snacks or drinks on the go

Exceptions:-
I am only allowed to buy something if I have completely run out of an item e.g shampoo etc.
As I have an ENORMOUS stash of beauty products, I don't think I'm going to run out of anything in the next 100 days, but if I do have to purchase something, it must be budget friendly (no high-end splurges until this is over!), and I have to mention it in my weekly spending ban updates.  I am also allowed to buy things like birthday presents and get my hair cut if I need it.

And a little extra incentive...
I really want to start using up more of what I already have, so I'm going to put £1 into a jar for every full size product (plus £2 for a full size make-up item, 50p for a travel size and 10p for a sachet) that I use up from today until the ban ends.  At the end, if I've raised enough, I can treat myself to just one high-end product (only if I actually want something mind!) and put anything remaining towards my holiday fund.

Why I'm Doing This:-
When I left college a few years ago, I got myself into a lot of debt and it's only been in the last year that I've managed to be able to pay everything back and be in the black again.  Being in debt is a horrible, depressing and stressful experience, so it's not something that I ever want to find myself in again!  I want to be able to create a manageable budget for when the spending ban is over AND be able to start putting some money away for things like holidays/moving to another city etc, so that I don't have to rely on credit cards and overdrafts to pay for them.

What does this mean for We Were Raised By Wolves?
There won't be any major changes to the blog whilst I'm doing the spending ban as I have loads of products in my stash (and from xmas!) that I haven't reviewed or featured yet.  I'm hoping that the challenge will also inspire me to come up with some more creative posts too, so the only difference you're going to see around here is the addition of a weekly spending ban update.

Can I join in?
Yes!  Lots of bloggers are already doing this so if you want to join in, just do it!  Alice from Bright Town Girl has a big list of all the bloggers who are currently involved here and Blogofshadows has one here.  Plus there's going to be a weekly twitter chat using the hashtag #spendingban starting this Thursday (10th) at 8pm.

So that's it, wish me luck!

  2. Good luck, I'm sure you will do it! I am not doing a spending ban, but I have made a decision to really limit how much makeup I buy this year. I actually feel really bad sometimes when I think of how much I've spent in the past. x

    1. It all adds up doesn't it? Having a limit of what you spend on make-up is a really good idea :) x

  9. Good luck Evelyn! I've been already limiting purchases. I haven't really bought anything since November when I was on holidays. Anything new that's been out I've seen before, you know? Nothing looks all that different or exciting any more.
I know you can do it!

  12. I did this last year =) It was hard but it felt great once I'd finished and my spending has definitely cut back since. I might do another but I'm off to London later in the month so I might start at the beginning of Feb so as not to spoil my trip. I don't buy high end anyway but I need to save all that I can really. Best of luck to you, I'm sure you can manage it! I look forward to reading your progress =) Here's a tip, don't window shop and don't browse new collections. Not even swatches. If you don't know about something you can't want to buy it! xx

  18. Oooh crikey - good luck with this, its an excellent idea but I know I wouldn't be able to stick to it! However I am reigning in my spending and trying to use up Christmas presents and my huge sample stash throughout January so it's a start! x

    1. That is a good start! I was really worried at first that I wouldn't be able to even start the ban, but after seeing how many products I have in my stash AND all the stuff I got for xmas, it seems like it should be relatively easy. Well I hope so anyway! x

    1. No probs :) Yeah it seems like a good idea to have a little extra incentive as I mainly want to do the ban to force me into using up some of my crazy beauty stash! x

  20. This is definitely a good idea, especially the putting some money aside once something is finished part. I'll definitely be looking into starting this, but obviously a few days later than everyone else :)
