The 100 Day Spending Ban is OVER!

Today marks the end of my 100 Day Spending Ban, hooray!

At times, it has felt like it's lasted so long, but really those 100 days went by a lot sooner than I had anticipated.  There have been one or two minor slip ups here and there, but for the most part I stuck to the ban pretty well.  Out of the 100 days, I only properly ran out of one product and had to buy some concealer.  I thought I would run out of more things, but as the ban started after xmas, I was lucky enough to have a well stocked stash from xmas gifts etc.  I'm also incredibly lucky to receive PR samples every now and then, which certainly made it easier, there's no denying that.

There is one thing that I didn't stick to during the ban and that was putting aside any money for the amount of empties that I used up, but I have a rough idea in mind.  The concept certainly helped me to finish some half empty products up anyhow!

What I've discovered through doing the ban & some tips on managing your money:-

1.  It's important to keep track of your spending at least on a monthly basis.  I have a budget for things like bills, food, travel expenses and such so I know exactly where my money is going each week.  Jotting things down in a notebook or on your phone definitely helps.  There are loads of budgeting apps for smartphones so you could look into one of these to help you.

2.  There is a difference between wanting and needing something.  Might not seem like it when you're swatching away in Boots or drooling over a Space NK counter, but having a rough idea of what you have can help to stop impulse purchases.  Shopping The Stash posts are great for reminding you of what you already have, but perhaps don't use as much as you should.

3.  Reading reviews of potential product buys is a must for me.  I know I'm biased being a blogger and all, but I've crossed off a lot of things from my wishlist recently after seeing not so great reviews.  Become a savvy shopper and do your homework first before opening your purse!

4.  Pay for things with cash only if you can.  It makes a huge difference when you're looking at and holding actual money.

5.  If you're in debt, write down the total amount of what you owe on a piece of paper and keep it in your purse.  Look at this amount every time before you pay for something, this will help you to figure out whether you really need to be spending anything.

6.  You will not die if you don't own the latest MAC lipstick from their most recent collection!

7.  Friends who can get you staff discounts at beauty counters are amazing.

I'd like to thank everyone in the blogging community who gave me lots of support through comments, emails and random chats on Twitter.  I'd definitely do another one of these in the future again if everyone else joined in! :)

  2. Sounds like you did really well and you gave some great tips for managing money, it's so easy to get caught up in the hype of "needing" to have the latest product but very few people have unlimited budgets and it really is ok to reign it in when needed. x

  6. Hi,
Well done! It was so hard wasn't it?! Mine ended earlier this month about April 4. I did have a few breaks and had to buy an outfit for a wedding which I hadn't thought about, so I have reflections too but have yet to catch up with my tardy blogging.
You're right though, we won't die hehe.

  7. Congratulations, lady!!! My tip for spending is to write a wishlist of all the things that you want. Three weeks later, write another wishlist of all the things you want, and check out the differences between them! The things that are on both are things you realllllly want.

  13. Well done you! My ban has just come to an end (shall be doing a post soon) and I could not agree with you more that there is a difference between what you want and what you really need and number 6 gave me a giggle, think I need to remember this more when drooling over all the pretty products! x
