Haircare Review: Tommyguns Blueberry, Ginseng & Honey Shampoo and Conditioner

Monday, 11 November 2013

The cold weather can take its toll on your hair, leaving it looking duller and thinner than it usually is.  To combat this, hair stylists often recommend switching to a specially formulated 'thickening' shampoo and conditioner, so I've been recently road testing this duo from Tommyguns

Packaged in compact (but still your standard 250ml), square-shaped bottles, Tommyguns' haircare looks quietly chic and reminds me of the kind of products you'd expect to find in a high-end hotel.  I was sent their 'Thickening Duo' to try out as my hair has been feeling a little lifeless and flat since the weather changed.  This duo uses active natural ingredients such as Blueberry (for shine, bounce, and to keep hair vitalised), Ginseng (to help boost the hair's strength and thickness to give it enhanced volume and texture) and Honey (for moisturisation in the conditioner).

Shampoo
As a general rule of thumb, I try to avoid haircare products with SLS, so I was a little disappointed to see that this shampoo has SLES in it (a gentler version of SLS, but one that can still be irritating for some people, especially those with sensitive scalps and skin).  Luckily, I didn't experience any irritation from using this, but I would recommend doing a patch test first if you are sensitive to these ingredients.  The shampoo smells fruity-meets- herbal and cleaned my hair thoroughly.  It did feel a lot more 'squeakier' than usual, but this soon disappeared once I used the conditioner.

Conditoner
The matching conditioner has the same kind of scent as the shampoo but smells of a lot more parfum.  It's your standard medium thick consistency, and I left it on my ends and lengths for around 3-5 minutes before rinsing.  After drying naturally, my hair felt OK, but not as soft as it normally is.  The big difference I noticed was in the thickness which is what this duo has been created for; it definitely helps to put some oomph in your hair and make it look fuller, but these results were only temporary as they didn't last more than 24 hours.

Summary: This thickening duo is ideal for a quick fix when you need your hair looking fuller and bouncier for a night out, but not one I'd recommend for everyday use as they do feel a little too drying for my liking.  May be better suited to fine and oily hair much more.

Priced at £5.50 each, available from Waitrose, instore and online.

  4. Meh, I avoid SLS too and am always disappointed to see SLES as well. Sometimes some brands even advertise themselves as sulfate free but then have SLES and it's like…. al most the same thing -_-
