Celebrating Pantone's Colour of the Year for 2014 - Radiant Orchid

Thursday, 6 February 2014

Back in my college days when I was studying photography, I used to hang out with a lot of art, fashion and graphic design students who were obsessed with trends and the 'next big thing'.  Pantone was of course name dropped often as the 'authority on colour'.  So every year, they choose a new colour to inspire and encourage those in the industry to express their creativity in new and exciting ways.

Pantone's Colour of the Year for 2014 is Radiant Orchid, a Spring feeling purple-pink.  The eagle eyed amongst you will have no doubt seen this hue pop up in a lot of home / interior design magazines and numerous Spring/Summer fashion look books.  I love purple shades, so I thought I'd join in with the celebration of this colour and have a rummage through my beauty stash to see what similar shades I could find.
I found it really difficult to pinpoint the exact Radiant Orchid shade, so all of these are similar-ish.  So let's think of it as a general celebration of purpley-pinks!

For eyes, I love the Laura Mercier Caviar Eye Stick in Orchid*.  Their Caviar Eye Sticks are easy to wear, cream eyeshadow in a twist up stick form and are long lasting, oh-so creamy and pigmented.  Orchid is a pinky mauve/violet with fine silver shimmer.  It's such a pretty Spring shade, and although it has shimmer, it's very subtle so suitable for everyday wear.

Finding Radiant Orchid style lip products was a struggle because I tend to go for more traditional girly pinks, so I pulled out Revlon Lip Butter in Berry Smoothie, a juicy, medium-pink shade and Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip Colour in Royal Orchid*, which always looks very purpley online, but IRL it's more of a pinky-mauve.

For nails, I plumped for Barry M Nail Pain in Bright Purple which is way, way more purple than Radiant Orchid, but has some pinky undertones in certain lights.  And for good measure, I wanted to include a new hair treatment I've been trying out recently; Tigi Hair Reborn Smoothing Texture Refine Masque* which comes in the most amazing purple packaging I've ever seen!  This mask is great for anyone who has frizz prone or dry hair - it smoothes it all out a treat and feels like you've just had an expensive hair salon treatment done.  Win!

Are you a fan of Pantone's Radiant Orchid colour for 2014?
Do you have any similar shades in your beauty stash?

  1. I bought the Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in "L'Adoree" from the Spring collection last week and I think it fits the radiant orchid category perfectly. Definitely one to look into if you love the shade! xx
