Review: Jurlique Rose Silk Finishing Powder

Jurlique Rose Silk Finishing Powder* (10g, £24.50, link)

Finishing powders tend to divide beauty junkies.  Some absolutely swear by them as the last step in their make-up routine to achieving that coveted flawless look.  Others simply prefer different products like setting sprays for getting the same finish, whilst many don't really see the point in them full stop.  Me?  I've always been on the fence about them, so how do I feel about this one from Jurlique?

Jurlique's Rose Silk Finishing Powder comes in a huge container with frosted sides and a sleek matte black top.  Flip it open and your nose is immediately greeted to a lovely traditional rose scent.  There's a mirror in the lid and it comes with a soft powder puff.

The powder itself is described as a "silky translucent facial powder for normal skin that refines the complexion and helps reduce unwanted shine, leaving skin fresh and radiant".  It's finely milled, non chalky and delicately fragranced with that rose scent.  The formula is talc-free, but it does contain silica which gives that silky softness to the face.  So far, I haven't experienced any breakout issues but it's perhaps something I wouldn't want to use every single day.

I've been applying it with a mineral powder brush to set my make-up, and it does a brilliant job of keeping everything in place, and it certainly delivers a flawless/airbrushed finish which I was really impressed with.  I also find that it keeps shine at bay for around 1-2 hours on me, but bear in my mind that I do have a particularly oily t-zone, and this is made for normal skin.

My only two criticisms are that the flawless finish doesn't seem to last very long, perhaps 2-3 hours max before it needs to be re-applied.  The other is that there's no twist/lock system on the sifter, so dispensing the powder is a little tricky and annoying as you have to tip it to one side ever so slightly or it will go everywhere.

On the whole, I do like it, but I wish it lasted longer on me and also think it would be a lot better if it was repackaged with an in-built twist/lock on the sifter.
Have you tried this?
Do you use finishing powders?

  1. I've normally always been a setting powder sort of gal - i have never heard of this before. Recently though, i've been using a setting spray as I really wanted to achieve more of a dewy finish, but knowing me i'll probably change my mind again - lovely review. Great phots.. 1. I think the main difference between a setting powder and finishing powder is that the latter usually do something a bit 'more' such as reducing/refining pores etc.
Setting sprays are fab for giving a dewy finish :) xx

  3. This powder sounds lovely but I agree the packaging looks quite difficult to use. I think it sounds as if it would be lovely for setting concealer I often use a different powder under the eyes to avoid caking. xx

    1. It's a bit time-consuming to use but if you swirl a big powder brush in there, it's not too bad. I just wish everything loose was packaged like Bare Minerals with their click and go sifters! I found this one pretty useful to set concealer with when used with the right brush, so it's worth trying out xx

  5. Been wanting to try the citrus one for a while but I'm not a fan of loose powders, too messy. Read great things about the rose too. Fab review! X
