Health & Lifestyle: Salad: Good Health In A Bowl #AD

Monday, 13 September 2021

A healthy meal doesn’t have to be boring. Yes, you read it right. Not because you don’t like vegetables or certain kinds of food, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t a bowl of salad for you. Salad is one of the most flexible food recipes in the world. Whether you’re a vegetarian, pescatarian, or eat a mix of everything, one way or another, there is a salad recipe that suits you. It can be a mix of everything or simply put the ingredients that match your diet or preference. It’s like a complete DIY kit for healthy living. Here are some ingredients that you can add to be part of your healthy bowl of goodness.

Raw greens are usually the base of a salad. You would want greens that are crispy and vibrant without any signs of wilting or yellowing. The most popular greens are lettuce. You may opt for leaf lettuce or romaine lettuce as they’re the ones that are richer in vitamins.

Fresh fruits can be very flexible. Aside from being a healthy snack or dessert, you can also incorporate them in your salad. Some of the common fruits mixed in salads are apples, oranges, pomegranates, or you can also squeeze some lemon juice into your mixture.

Other vegetables are commonly the body of a salad. While greens are also vegetables, there are other colourful gifts of nature that you can mix in your salad to make them more colourful and healthier. Some common vegetables are carrots, cucumbers, onions, mushrooms, and peppers.

Nuts and seeds are a great addition to your salads. They are tasty and add crunch to your meal. Both are packed with protein fibres, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fat, too. They also help with weight loss as they can help burn fats and regulate your food intake. Common nuts in the salad are almonds, pistachios, cashews, and walnuts, while some seeds that are usually added are pumpkin seeds and chia seeds.

Beans and legumes are packed with nutrients that can be a good staple in your healthy diet. They help lower blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart diseases. They are also rich in antioxidants that fight other diseases and ageing. You can add black beans, chickpeas, kidney beans, and many others for added texture, flavour, and nutrients.

Cheese is an excellent source of calcium, protein, and fat, aside from the added flavour contributing to a salad. You can use goat cheese, feta cheese, parmesan, or cheddar cheese, depending on your preference, but any of them makes a good pair with any salads.

Proteins like meat complement salads well. By adding protein to your salad, you are making it a more filling meal. You may use red meat, chicken, hard-boiled egg, or fish as your protein. It is essential to keep in mind to opt for lean meat for a healthier choice.

Dressings

Creating delicious dressings for your salad is crucial as it will enhance the flavour of your chosen mixture of vegetables, fruits, proteins, and other components. Aside from adding value to its appearance, salad dressing also helps digestion. There are three main types of salad dressing that you can choose from.

Vinaigrette is a mixture of oil, vinegar, herbs, spice, salt, and pepper. While you can decide what ingredients to use to make your vinaigrette, using healthy options will give you more benefits. You can opt for extra virgin olive oil for extra flavour for oils, or you can use canola oil for a light and neutral-flavoured oil.

The creamy dressing uses mayonnaise, yoghurt, sour cream, or milk as a base. Many people love creamy food, and if you are one of those people, this kind of dressing will enhance your salad game. There are many kinds of cream that you can use as a base, but you can choose yoghurt if you are cutting calories. It contains low calories and fat than the others, and it is also higher in protein.

Cooked dressing resembles a creamy consistency, but instead of using a creamy base, it uses cooked egg to thicken the mixture. It may also contain vinegar, flour, mustard, salt, pepper, and butter, depending on how you want your dressing to taste. You can skip putting hard-boiled eggs in your salad if you are opting for this kind of dressing. Always remember to include healthy ingredients like light butter for less saturated fat and calories.

Add-ons:

To maximise the benefits you are getting in your salad bowl, you can add these supplements to your salad dressing for additional health benefits.

Turmeric
You may have heard of this spice as part of Asian cooking being a common ingredient in curries. But aside from its wide use in cooking, this root is packed with curcumin widely used to make medicines. It is said to help manage pain and inflammation, high cholesterol, liver disease, heartburn, and stress. One way to add healthy benefits to your bowl of salad is to add turmeric powder to your salad dressings. Just add a teaspoon and your salad is healthier than ever.

CBD oil
Cannabidiol or more commonly known as CBD oil, is extracted from the hemp plant. Although it comes from the family of Cannabis, this excellent oil natural supplement does not cause psychoactive effects. Instead, it is believed to be packed with many therapeutic benefits. Many people use CBD oil for pain relief, inflammation, stress, anxiety, and management of other health conditions. Aside from these benefits, you can also use CBD oil for general wellness. Adding a few drops of CBD oil to your salad dressing will add more health benefits to both your body and mind.

Ashwagandha
Aside from helping your body fight stress, ashwagandha is also packed with other health benefits. It has been used for centuries to enhance concentration, increase energy in the body, lower blood sugar levels, and boost testosterone levels. It is rich in withanolides which helps manage inflammation and tumour growth. A tablespoon of ashwagandha in your salad dressing can make a difference and provide additional therapeutic benefits.

Chaga Powder
Chaga is a kind of mushroom that has been used for centuries for medicinal use. Due to its antioxidant properties, it is said to help manage blood sugar, inflammation, and cholesterol levels. It is also believed that it has the ability to fight cancer. You can mix a teaspoon of Chaga powder in your salad dressing for added benefits.

Home Fragrance: Arran Sense Of Scotland - After The Rain Reed Diffuser review

Friday, 10 September 2021

With Autumn rapidly approaching, and a sense of change in the air, I wanted to switch to a new home fragrance to get me in the mood for the cooler weather ahead.

For those unfamiliar with Arran, this luxury Scottish brand is popular in hotels throughout the UK and they actually won a Travellers Choice Award from Tripadvisor last year. All of their products have been made on the Isle of Arran for the past three decades, and their innovative scents are inspired by Scotland's stunning natural environment.

One of the newest ranges from Arran is called After The Rain, and this beautiful fragrance can be found across their bath & body lines, as well as their home fragrance, of course, so you can choose the product that suits you the most.

I was delighted to bring the After The Rain Reed Diffuser into my home, and it's already received plenty of compliments from friends and family who have been visiting us recently.

This bestselling fragrance was inspired by the scent of a Spring garden on the Isle of Arran, following a rain shower, and evokes an awakening fresh and floral blend of essential oils such as Rose, Sandalwood, and Lime to uplift the senses. Delicate Rose Petals, Musk and floral citrus are gently combined with notes of Arran's precious woods for a wonderfully sophisticated and vibrant fragrance. I also love the simplicity of the plain glass bottle and neutral reeds as it will fit in perfectly with any decor in your home.

Not a fan of reed diffusers? You can also shop the After The Rain fragrance as candles and room sprays.

Sustainable Lifestyle: Pets Against Plastics - The Online UK Plastic-Free Pet Store

Monday, 6 September 2021

I love dogs more than I like people, and my two fur babies are my pride and joy. But just like having kids, being a dog mama can be tricky at times when you're trying to live more sustainably. Luckily, there are lots of alternatives out there nowadays to help you reduce the carbon footprint of your foot-legged best friends.

Pets Against Plastics is one such online UK store that is helping dog owners to turn the tide against plastic waste. Set up in 2018 by two animal lovers, Lucy and Luke, Pets Against Plastics has blossomed into a thriving online shop where you can find everything you need to make better eco-friendly choices for your pets. From toys and treats, to plastic-free poo bags, bowls and grooming accessories, it's a great place to make planet friendly purchases for both dogs and cats.

They very kindly sent me some of their betsellers to give you an idea of what they stock:-

Denzel's Tropical Bites* (£2.90) and High Protein Soft Baked Chews* (£2.50)

Denzel's are a popular dog treat company who specialise in having all of their products in plastic-free packaging. Instead, the pouches are 100% biodegradable and compostable, and they recommend that you pop these into your regular bin at home as they will break down within just 30 weeks in landfill conditions, as opposed to 300 years for single use plastic pouches.

My dogs loved the Tropical Bites which are made from 100% natural ingredients and contain low-fat, healthy ingredients such as Coconut, Seaweed, White Fish, Ginger and Mango. The High Protein Soft Baked Chews also went down well as a tasty evening snack and are again made from high quality natural ingredients - in this case a blend of Spinach, Chickpeas and Chicken.

Goodchap's Whitefish Jerky* (£3.50)

Many dogs these days have allergies just like people so natural options like this White Fish Jerky from Goodchap's are a really good alternative to give. High in protein and free from wheat and gluten, these additive-free, 100% whitefish skin pieces are dried and wonderfully chewy for your dogs to enjoy.

The packaging is made from paper which is easily recyclable or compostable.

Fetch It Poo Bags* (£5.49)

Perhaps the single most important eco-friendly switch you can do as a dog owner is to swap your regular plastic poo bags to these Fetch It plastic-free ones. 100% compostable, these poo bags are manufactured from GM-free corn starch with no plastic element at all, despite feeling just like the real thing. Strong and tough, they break down in months and won't leach any harmful chemicals into the environment. Plus they are super cute!

Women's Health: Suvi Labs Botanicals + Collagen Supplements review

Thursday, 2 September 2021

Heads up ladies! There's a brand new female-led health and wellbeing brand called Suvi Labs on the market and their first innovation has been developed to support women over 40 experiencing perimenopause, as well as younger women with PMS symptoms.

Co-founded by two mums in their 40s who were going through the perimenopause themselves, Kathrin and Charlene have used their experience in branding and marketing to launch Suvi Labs, a chic, all-natural supplement brand based on extensive research, trials, and expert-led advice.

Their first product is called Botanicals + Collagen which is a powerful supplement comprised of just seven natural ingredients, each carefully chosen to help relieve the most common symptoms of hormonal fluctuations that are caused by the perimenopause and PMS.

What's In It?
A daily serving of two capsules contains 15ug Vitamin D3 (300% NRA), 30ug Magnesium Citrate, 1000mg Marine Collagen, 80mg Ashwagandha Root extract, 80mg Turmeric extract, 30mg Saffron extract, and 4mg Siberian Ginseng extract.

What's Not In It?
There are no artificial fillers, bulking agents, or any additional ingredients in this supplement. However, it should be pointed out that it does contain Marine Collagen which is derived from fish so it's not suitable for vegans to use.

What Does It Do?
Each ingredient serves its purpose with Turmeric helping to ease joint pain and headaches, Vitamin D3 supporting brain function and the nervous system, and Magnesium to boost low mood, PMS, and increase sleep quality. A hefty dose of Marine Collagen is included to improve skin quality because collagen production slows down as we age so supplements containing this as highly beneficial for increasing skin's elasticity and the fight against fine lines and wrinkles.

Elsewhere in the supplement, extracts of Ashwagandha restore a sense of calm and help to regulate blood sugar levels, with Saffron playing an important role to reduce those annoying hot flushes, low mood, and boost libido, and Siberian Ginseng to restore energy levels and provide further mental focus and clarity.

Overall Thoughts?
This is an excellent supplement that has been well thought out by women, for women, to support them through life's natural hormonal changes. Whether you're experiencing perimenopause or monthly PMS symptoms that are impacting in your day-to-day routine, trying a dedicated supplement like this can help to reduce the severity of those symptoms, to help you to get on with your life.

Suvi Labs Botanicals + Collagen Supplements* (60 capsules, 30 day supply) retails for £45 from suvi-labs.com

Introducing: Wild Pharmacy - Skincare Review

Tuesday, 31 August 2021

There is a wealth of natural beauty brands to discover from the Nordic countries, and I've recently been trialling several products from the Finish brand, Wild Pharmacy.

Adding a pop of contemporary colour to my vanity table, Wild Pharmacy are a mid-priced, cruelty-free skincare company from Finland that specialises in wild foraged natural and organic ingredients.

They also have a whole ethos about encouraging individuals to see themselves as whole, and they promote mental health awareness with positive quotes on their packaging to help build self-confidence. In addition, the brand supports campaigns and projects related to anti-bullying, particularly cyberbullying of young people, with a Gen Z focus on health and mental wellbeing.

I was delighted to receive a package of their products to test out from LoveLula who stock Wild Pharmacy on their website, making them readily available to UK consumers - yay!

Wild Pharmacy Good Things Happen Superfood Vital Mask* (50ml, £19, link)
I'm an avid face mask fan so let's start with the Good Things Happen Superfood Vital Mask. Suitable for all skin types, this cream-based face mask helps to rejuvenate and brighten the complexion, reducing redness and irritation, whilst generating a smoother finish. Packed full of antioxidants, it protects against free radicals, maintains moisture levels and boosts elasticity - I love it! Best of all, it's a quick and easy 15-minute treatment - apply to clean skin and then rinse off.

Wild Pharmacy Clear & Glowing Gentle Face Cleanser* (150ml, £17.50, link)
If you're in the market for a gentle, soothing gel cleanser, this needs to be added to your shopping list ASAP. The Clear & Glowing Gentle Face Cleanser does what it says on the bottle, removing all traces of dirt and impurities, without stripping or drying out the skin. It feels very refreshing to use and I'd definitely recommend it as a morning cleanser to wake up your skin.

Wild Pharmacy Rock Star Mild Facial Peeling Gel* (50ml, £19, link)
With finely milled Walnut Shell and Activated Charcoal powder, this Rock Star Mild Facial Peeling Gel offers a gentle exfoliation in a soothing gel base of Aloe Vera juice and Peach Kernel Oil. Great for clogged pores, the charcoal element acts like a magnet to draw out and absorb impurities, so you get smoother, clearer looking skin after just the first use.

Wild Pharmacy Healing Meditation Calming Serum* (30ml, £19.50, link)
A high quality calming serum is a staple in my skincare routine and I've been really enjoying using the Healing Meditation Calming Serum which ticks all the right boxes. Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, it has an ultra-soothing formula of well known calming natural extracts such as  Chamomile and Calendula to quickly bring down any inflammation or redness in the skin.

Wild Pharmacy Cool And Calm Hydrating Face Mist* (150ml, £17.50, link)
Who doesn't love a refreshing cooling face mist?! Although we haven't been blessed with much of a summer this year, this Cool And Calm Hydrating Face Mist is still a very useful purchase for anyone who has sensitive, reactive or oily skin and can, of course, be used all year round. Not only does this toner revitalise tired skin, but it also hydrates and rebalances for a happier complexion overall.

August Empties: Products I've Used Up

Monday, 30 August 2021

The end of the month is rolling around yet again, so it's time for another Empties post! Like last month, I've been trying to declutter some more travel-size products, alongside some familiar everyday items.

Kiss The Moon Love After Dark Pillow Mist* (travel size)
Everything from Kiss The Moon smells incredible and it was a real pleasure to use this pillow mist which has a blend of rose, frankincense, and ylang ylang essential oils to help you unwind. Heavenly! Repurchase? I'm using one from Neals Yard Remedies at the moment, but I have no doubt I'll return to this in the near future.

Aveda Shampure Dry Shampoo
Since Covid happened, I haven't been using much dry shampoo at all thanks to WFH life, so this has lasted me probably about two years. I believe Aveda has repackaged/renamed it since then, however, the formula remains the same and it's one of the best that I've ever tried. Repurchase? Yes.

Laidbare Butter Me Up Body Butter*
Another product that has taken me a long time to finish up has been this big tub of body butter from Laidbare. I love the rich and heady fragrance, and the light texture just sinks into the skin quickly. Perfect to use after a long soak in the bath. Repurchase? Yes.

Weleda Wild Rose Creamy Body Wash* (travel size)
If you have dry skin, you must try these body washes from Weleda because they are SO good! I've used them for years the Wild Rose scent is still one of my favourites. Repurchase? Will do.

Salcura Bioskin Zeoderm Skin Repair Moisturiser
Ideal for skin that's prone to eczema, dermatitis, and/or psoriasis, I highly recommend the Salcura range if you're looking to avoid harsh chemicals like steroids as most of their range is 97-99% natural. This is another product that I always have in my skincare stash for when my eczema flareups and it still works a treat after all these years. Repurchase? Already have!

Tropic Skin Shade Tinted Facial Sun Cream SPF50 in Light/Medium*
I haven't been wearing much makeup over the past year, so for sunny days, I've just been slapping on this as an easy, fuss-free base. It gives a good light coverage and doesn't make me look super shiny, plus it's a proper facial sunscreen with the tint added to the water-resistant formula, rather than a tinted moisturiser with a teeny bit of sunscreen thrown in. Repurchase? Definitely will next Summer.

Omorovicza Cleansing Foam (travel size)
Despite it being a famous cult cleanser, I wasn't too keen on this and felt like it left my skin feeling a bit sticky/tacky afterwards, no matter how much I rinsed the residue away with a flannel. Not for me. Repurchase? No.

Omorovicza Deep Cleansing Mask (travel size)
The Omorovicza cleansing mask is a completely different story though - I loved it! Although the sample pot was for only one use, it made my complexion look and feel instantly clearer and smoother. Repurchase? Definitely on my shopping list.

Tropic Illuma Light Diffusing Concealer in Brûlee*
For a natural, cruelty-free, and vegan-friendly undereye concealer, Tropic's Illuma Light Diffusing Concealers are simply amazing. They conceal dark circles beautifully without creasing into fine lines and always make me look much more awake than I actually am - a great 'cheat' product when you haven't had much sleep. Repurchase? Yes.

L'Occitane Shea Hand Cream (travel size)
Last, but not least, I finished up a mini hand cream from L'Occitane. I used to use these all the time but sadly there is the issue of L'Occitane no longer being cruelty-free due to selling in China, so I'm just using up what I have left. Repurchase? No.

What have you used up recently?

This month's LoveLula Beauty Box is worth a whopping £71 and features a mix of high-end, green beauty brands. I always love the variation in these subscription boxes! Curious to find out more? Here's a rundown of all the products inside.

Terre Verdi Balancing Mist (RRP £9)

A refreshing facial mist is always a winner during the summer months and they don't come much more revitalizing than this Balancing Mist from Terre Verdi. It contains lots of lovely skin-calming anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which makes it a handy skincare hero for problematic complexions.

Ooh! Oils Of Heaven Blackcurrant Face Oil (RRP £19)

Another useful skin soother is this wonderful Ooh! Oils Of Heaven Blackcurrant Face Oil. I imagine most skin types will love this, but it's particularly beneficial for helping with uneven skin tones and for reducing any inflammation or flare-ups. A clever miracle worker thanks to the high antioxidant content of those superstar blackcurrants.

Butterwhips Warmly Relaxing Body Butter (RRP £18)

I'm a big fan of Butterwhips, having previously reviewed them a few months ago, so I was really happy to discover a big tin of their bestselling Warmly Relaxing Body Butter. The texture of this body butter has a lovely thick, rich, typically whipped allure that simply melts into the skin, delivering intense moisture. I'll be saving this to use during winter when my body feels drier as it's very moisturising!

Fuss-free makeup at its finest and excellent quality as always from INIKA
