Foodie Friday: Mr. Popple's Chocolate review - Raw, Organic, Vegan & Ethical #GiftGuide

Friday, 3 December 2021

Calling all fellow chocoholics - this post is especially for you! Dive into the scrumptious world of Mr. Popple's Chocolate and discover some of the best raw, organic, and vegan chocolate that I've ever had the pleasure of trying.

Chocolate is, of course, a very easy product to review, but it's not always the easiest to shop for these days. With increasing awareness about child labour, slavery and environmental destruction being linked to the process of making chocolate, it's more important than ever to make ethical choices for both people and the planet.

This is why I'm pleased to feature Mr. Popple's Chocolate as the first addition to my Christmas Gift Guide for 2021!

Why You Should Buy Mr. Popple's Chocolate
Mr. Popple's Chocolate is a proper bean-to-bar chocolate that's handcrafted using raw Criolla Cacao which is fairly traded in partnership with a local farmer's co-op in Peru. Not only is the cacao sustainably grown in the Amazon rainforest where no trees are cut down to farm it, but it's also higher in antioxidants and polyphenols than the leading dark chocolate brands (as tested by Oxford Brookes University).

Using high-quality organic ingredients, the bars are handmade without any cheap refined sugars or fats, instead letting the flavour of the raw cacao do all the talking. A little sweetness is added with low GI Yacon Syrup or Coconut Blossom Sugar, so this chocolate is great for those who are keeping an eye on their sugar levels.

Mr. Popple's Chocolate is completely plant-based and free from the top 14 allergens including dairy, soya, gluten and nuts which means it can be enjoyed by everyone.

That's not all! These chocolate bars are wrapped in plastic-free compostable packaging and are free from palm oil to be kinder to the planet.

There are currently seven different flavours in the main range to explore plus some special limited edition bars. Personally, I'm not much of a fan of dark chocolate, but if you are, Mr. Popple's have 88% and 100% raw chocolate bars available for those who like the really dark stuff.

Signature Seventy
Mr Popple's original raw chocolate sensation, the Signature Seventy is 70% raw cacao, sweetened with Yacon Syrup and a touch of creamy Lucuma Fruit. It's as dark as I like my chocolate to be, and has a wonderful rich quality to it.

Dark Mylk
For something creamier but that still possesses that rich dark quality, the Dark Mylk bar is a real treat. A combination of Hemp and Rice Milks has been added to 61% raw cacao with a little golden Coconut Sugar for a truly indulgent result.

Creamy Mylk
Gloriously smooth and silky, the Creamy Mylk is one of those vegan chocolates where you have to double-check the packet just to make sure it doesn't contain any dairy as it tastes so similar to the real thing. With 43% raw cacao, this one has a proper moreish mouthfeel and it's the perfect choice for those who enjoy high-quality raw chocolate but prefer something milkier and sweeter.

Pumpkin Spice
A special limited-edition flavour, Pumpkin Spice is an additive blend of 43% raw cacao with a cosy mix of Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg and Cloves layered over creamy Hemp and Rice milks. I love seasonal flavours like this so stock up and pop them into your Santa stockings!

Euphoric Orange
Back to the darker quantities, Euphoric Orange is a festive choice for this time of the year with 70% raw cacao, Sweet Orange Oil and a little Yacon Syrup and another personal favourite of mine.

Uplifting Mint
To round off, I had to include Uplifting Mint which in my opinion is equally as festive as chocolate orange. It has a similar composition with 70% raw cacao and an interesting twist of Lime that fits nicely with the Mint Oil.

Mr. Popple's Chocolate Bars* (pictured above are 35g bars, £2.19 each) are available from mrpoppleschocolate.co.uk

Foodie Friday: Introducing Flower & White - Delicious Fairtrade & Vegetarian, Sweet Treats Under 100 Calories

Friday, 22 October 2021

Here's an extra special Foodie Friday post this week just for my lovely vegetarian readers, let me introduce you to the blissfully sweet world of Flower & White!

Every now and then, there's a brand that pops up that ticks all of the right boxes when I'm looking for something to satisfy my massive sweet tooth, and Flower & White have exceeded all of my expectations in this area.

Based in Telford in nearby Shropshire, this independent business has grown from humble beginnings making giant Swiss meringues in a shed, to being a hugely successful brand with stockists selling their yummy products across the UK.

Their USP? Making delicious chocolate-covered meringue bars that are wholly indulgent, but which come in at under 100 calories. They're suitable for vegetarians, made from only natural ingredients with no artificial colours, flavours, additives, E-numbers or preservatives, and they're also gluten-free. Take all of my money now!

That's not all though. Flower & White are an ethical brand in every sense of the word. The egg whites used to create their melt-in-the-middle fillings are all free-range, and they use fairtrade ingredients to ensure that farmers are paid properly. To help the environment, all of their products are made without palm oil and their packaging is made from 100% recyclable paper.

Coveted for their original chocolate-covered meringue bars, these are currently available in five different mouth-watering flavours so you can take your pick from Lemon Meringue, Chocolate Crunch, Raspberry Crumble, Hazelnut Praline and Salted Caramel

The rich flavour and creaminess of the chocolate perfectly compliments that light and airy meringue filling which really does melt in your mouth. Each bar is just 95 calories, yet they are so sweet and satisfying that you won't feel like you've eaten a typical low-calorie bar.

It's easy to fall in love with these sweet treats, and whilst the bars are the ideal serving size for one person, Flower & White also sell larger 75g pouches of mini meringue bites in all of the above flavours so you can share them with friends and family. They'll be a crowd-pleaser at your next get-together for sure! Like the bars, the pouches are also made from 100% recyclable paper packaging and each bite comes in at just 26 calories.

Mid-Week Pamper Treat: Fair Squared Apricot Facial Mask for Normal Skin + Cotton Facial Mask review #PlasticFree

Wednesday, 28 October 2020

Face masks are a pampering staple for me and I love trying out different formulas and formats. Back when I started blogging (many years ago now!), I used to use a lot of sheet masks as the K-Beauty trend was gaining ground in the UK then and everyone who was anyone was promoting them on YouTube and Instagram.

Oh, how times have changed! As we learn more about our impact on the environment and visibly see the pollution around us, the idea of using a single-use sheet mask these days just seems so wasteful and unnecessary. Yet they still pop up in many beauty subscription boxes and are increasingly popular amongst younger skincare fans who are all too keen to show off a Sunday selfie pic on Instagram.

So what are the alternatives to sheet masks?

Well, there are three clear options that I can see. Firstly, you could choose not to use any at all and instead stick to traditional face masks, either ready-made in recyclable packaging or try out your own DIY face mask recipes. Secondly, you could explore the emergence of 'eco-friendly' sheet masks which are made from 100% biodegradable natural materials such as bamboo. They're not perfect of course as they are still single-use, but they are a better option than using the mainstream plastic-based sheet masks.

Or thirdly, you could try a reusable cotton sheet mask which is what I've been testing out for the past month.

The Mask

I picked up this Fair Squared Cotton Facial Mask* (£6.95, 1 mask) from LoveLula after searching online for a plastic-free alternative to sheet masks. I was pleased to see that not only is this mask made from 100% organic cotton, but it's also certified fair trade so you know that the cotton farmers are being paid a proper living wage for their work and that the extra fairtrade supplement helps them to invest in their local farms and communities.

The cotton mask feels soft, durable and can, of course, be reused time and time again - simply pop it into the washing machine afterwards and it comes up good as new. When it eventually wears out after potentially a few years of usage, it can be easily recycled with other textiles.

The 'Juice'

To use with the Cotton Facial Mask, I also picked up the Fair Squared Apricot Facial Mask* (100ml, £9.95, link) which is a ready-made liquid formula packaged completely plastic-free in a glass jar with an aluminium lid and a paper label. Fair Squared have two liquid masks of this nature on offer, an Argan based formula for dry skin and this Apricot mask which is suitable for normal and combination skin types.

This vegan-friendly Apricot mask fluid has a beautiful silky soft texture thanks to a base blend of Apricot Kernel Oil and Olive Oil and it feels amazing on the skin. Not only is it nourishing and hydrating, but it also helps to reduce any redness or inflammation as it contains Chamomile extract and Vitamin E, so it's great for soothing flare-ups and sensitive areas.

How To Use

Combining the two is incredibly easy, you'll just need a bowl! After cleansing your face, pour some of the mask fluid (or you can use your own DIY liquid formula) into a bowl and let the Cotton Facial Mask soak in it for a few minutes. If needed, you can add some more of the fluid if you feel it's not saturated enough. This part is a bit trial and error, but I found that 25-30ml of fluid was an adequate amount for each application.

Once the Cotton Facial Mask is saturated, apply it to the face, making sure to press it down firmly onto the skin to help it to have the most contact possible. Relax and leave on for 10-15 minutes, remove the mask and massage in any excess. You can then follow up with your usual moisturiser or face oil to finish.

Overall Thoughts

Using a reusable cotton mask like this definitely has many positives for both the environment and your bank balance, but there are a couple of differences that I feel I need to point out.

  • A cotton mask is a much thicker material than the cellulose sheet masks so it doesn't adhere to the skin in the same way unless you use a lot of the mask fluid. My top tip is to ensure the cotton mask is thoroughly saturated before applying, and to use it on a cleansed face that's still wet or damp.

  • As it doesn't adhere in the same way, I would recommend using a cotton facial mask whilst you're lying down so that it stays in place better - it's the perfect opportunity to switch off and relax!

  • The fit of the Fair Squared Cotton Facial Mask isn't great in my honest opinion as the eye holes are too far apart and I would say I have a 'normal' sized face. The mask did shrink a little after the first use which improved the fit slightly but the eye spacing is still way off as you can see in the photos above (the first photo was taken after the first washing, and the second after the fourth washing).

All in all though, I must admit that I was very impressed with the formula of the Fair Squared Apricot Facial Mask fluid and I'd happily purchase this again. However, I will be on the lookout for a better fitting reusable cotton mask or should I just cut out bigger eye holes in this one?!

Have you tried any great plastic-free alternatives recently?

Foodie Friday: Ombar Organic Raw Chocolate - Super Choc Bundle review

Ombar Organic Raw Chocolate - Super Choc Bundle review
Getting a treat delivered through the post has been one of the few highlights of being in lockdown and a great way to lift your mood when everything seems so overwhelming. Like many, I've used this time to support some of my favourite ethical and independent businesses and this month, I decided to treat myself to Ombar's Super Choc Bundle

If you haven't tried Ombar before, please read this review as fast as humanly possible and put in your order online for one of their Super Choc Bundles - you won't regret it!

Ombar Organic Raw Chocolate - Super Choc Bundle review
Ombar are the crème de la crème of dairy-free chocolate. From the first moment that you savour their impossibly rich and creamy creation, you'll instantly fall in love. Not only is their chocolate vegan-friendly, gluten-free and organic, it's also fair trade (purchasing direct from farmer's co-ops in Ecuador) and made with raw cacao with zero refined sugar. But Ombar doesn't taste like a regular 'healthy' chocolate at all, neither does it taste like a typical dairy-free one. How do they do it then?

Firstly, the use of raw cacao means that there are more polyphenols (the super healthy compounds found in cacao and other plant-based ingredients) in each bar which you won't find in cacao that's been heated at high temperatures or roasted. Secondly, as there's no refined sugar present, the sweetness of the chocolate comes from a little added Coconut Sugar, whilst Creamed Coconut replaces traditional milk solids for a smooth and silky texture. Finally, each Ombar is packed with billions of live cultures (Lactobacillus Acidophilus) for a tasty dose of gut-friendly bacteria.

Ombar is a 'superfood chocolate' and each bar provides a source of Maganese which helps to protect your cells from oxidative stress.

And it's utterly delicious! With 14 flavours to choose from, I knew I had to treat myself to a Super Choc Bundle where you can build your own box of Ombars and choose 8 flavours to try.

Ombar Organic Raw Chocolate - Super Choc Bundle review
What's In My Box?

Ombar Coco Mylk
Coco Mylk is Ombar's lightest and creamiest mylk chocolate - perfect for those who want dairy-free chocolate but aren't a fan of the dark stuff. With 55% raw Cacao, it has a delectable melt-in-the-mouth texture and the natural coconut flavouring comes through the strongest with this one.

Ombar Strawberry Mylk
Coco Mylk's fruity little sister Strawberry Mylk has all the coconutty goodness with a zingy Strawberry flavour blended throughout. It's literally like your favourite childhood strawberry milkshake in bar form - absolute summer heaven.

Ombar Coco 60%
Coco 60% takes the raw Cacao count up to 60% so that you get a deeper chocolatey flavour than Coco Mylk. I really enjoy a piece of this to satisfy my sweet tooth after dinner and with such a rich taste, it's a good one to properly savour.

Ombar Mandarin
Orange chocolate is a classic flavour combination and it doesn't get better than Ombar Mandarin. Smooth and dark with tangy Mandarin and a pinch of tart Cranberry to help zing it up further, this is the one to try if you think you don't like dark chocolate.

Ombar Organic Raw Chocolate - Super Choc Bundle review
Ombar Centres Pistachio
The Ombar Centres bars are a truly special creation and each one has a smooth filling sandwiched between two layers of 60% dark chocolate. As you can see, I chose two of the Pistachio flavour as it's my current favourite and one was just not enough! I could actually eat a whole box of these as that subtle nutty Pistachio centre is to die-for.

Ombar Centres Raspberry & Coconut
Raspberry & Coconut is another fruity and creamy flavour that reminds me of Wimbledon and lazy summer days. The balance of the slightly tangy Raspberry is spot on with the creamy Coconut for a match made in summertime heaven (or all year round, it's that good).

Ombar Centres Coconut & Vanilla
Finally, my last choice was Coconut & Vanilla from the Centres range. I find that it's one of the more sweeter offerings from Ombar and it really hits the spot when I want a really indulgent and creamy bar of chocolate.

Ombar Super Choc Bundle is £12.74 (8 x 35g bars of your choice) with free UK P&P - ombar.co.uk

New In Beauty: Fushi BioVedic Skincare - Enyzme Face Wash, Daily Face Cream, Radiance Face Oil + Pomegranate Oil 80%+ review

Thursday, 11 April 2019

Fushi BioVedic Skincare - Enyzme Face Wash, Daily Face Cream, Radiance Face Oil + Pomegranate Oil 80% review
Launched last month, Fushi's new BioVedic skincare range has been helping my skin to transition to Spring with its formulas that are inspired by Ayurveda.

You may be more familiar with Fushi's organic food supplements (I reviewed their fantastic Aloe Vera Juice earlier in the year here), but the popular wellbeing brand also has a whole host of beauty products available and this brand new BioVedic skincare range are the latest additions.

I have admired the ethics of Fushi for a long time. Their commitment to supporting Fair Trade means that the brand will only purchase from suppliers that do not exploit indigenous populations, and they are proud members of the Ethical Company Organisation and the Good Shopping Guide so you can buy their products with a clear conscious. I also love the brand's Ayurvedic roots which regular readers will know that I'm fascinated with, and it's great to see traditional Ayurvedic herbs being used in more skincare these days.

The BioVedic skincare range features three effective products that make up a simple 3-step skincare routine which is based on formulas that contain the purest, freshly pressed oils and freshly ground herbs. There's a big emphasis on radiance and promoting a healthier, more glowy complexion so I'd recommend it for anyone who has dull skin in need of a boost.

The glass packaging and colourful labelling give the products an eco-friendly contemporary feel that stands out on your bathroom shelves and having used them for about a month now, I know that you'll definitely want to try them out for yourselves!

Fushi BioVedic Skincare - Enyzme Face Wash, Daily Face Cream, Radiance Face Oil + Pomegranate Oil 80% review
Fushi BioVedic Enzyme Face Wash* (150ml, £15, link)
Step one is, of course, a facial wash and this Enzyme Face Wash is a wonderfully light and refreshing gel-based cleanser with exfoliating properties. Packed full of revitalising herbs and oils that include Vanshlochan Stem extract, Rice Bran Oil, Bamboo Powder, Aloe Vera, Rose Otto, Kalahari Melon Seed Oil and Coconut Oil, it utilises plant-based enzymes to provide a gentle exfoliation to the skin which helps to boost cell renewal, leaving it looking brighter and more radiant than before. I've been using this just twice a week to combat any dullness and it's been working a treat, plus I find that it's blended seamlessly into my skincare routine with my other regular products.

Fushi BioVedic Radiance Face Cream* (50ml, £20, link)
If your skin is looking dull and feeling tired, the Radiance Face Cream is a brilliant product to try and offers a range of benefits including hydration, nourishment and overall brightening. Key ingredients include the revered Ayurvedic herb Manjisthta to promote long term radiance, Saffron to repair damaged skin, and Kalahari Melon Seed Oil which is rich in essential omegas to improve elasticity. This cream has a thicker than expected texture but once massaged in, it absorbs quickly, smells lovely and instantly hydrates the skin. I suspect that all skin types will like this, but do a patch test if yours is sensitive.

Fushi BioVedic Radiance Face Oil* (30ml, £22, link)
There are a plethora of facial oils in my skincare stash but I feel this Radiance Face Oil is an excellent all-rounder for many reasons. It's a good one to pick up if you're new to face oils in general and want to start using one in your daily routine. Formulated with a blend of five key nutrient dense oils which boasts Raspberry Seed to protect, Kalahari Melon Seed for anti-ageing properties, Rich Bran to brighten, Moringa to provide nourishment and Linseed to reduce inflammation, this Face Oil is lightweight and easy to use morning or night. Simply use a few drops directly onto the skin as the last step in your evening routine, or add to your AM moisturiser for a real brightening boost.

Fushi Pomegranate Oil 80%+* (50ml, £20, link)
Last but not least, I wanted to include another new release from Fushi - their Pomegranate Oil 80%+. Pomegranate Oil contains Omega 5 (also known as Punicic Acid) which is a unique and beneficial fatty acid that's packed full of potent antioxidants, and Fushi's is considered to be the first Pomegranate Oil on the market that contains a guaranteed minimum content of 80%. Punicic Acid has a number of skin benefits and has been shown to be able to repair damaged skin, even out skin tone and pigmentation, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, so it's great for those who have dry, mature, sensitive and damaged skin. You can use it all over the face and body for softer, more toned and supple skin.

This Pomegranate Oil is also food grade which means that you can take it internally so it doubles up as a useful food supplement. Drizzle a little over salads and soups, or blend into juices and smoothies to reap the heart-healthy, anti-inflammatory rewards thanks to high levels of Vitamin C, Linoleic Acid and Oleic Acid. The taste is somewhat acquired (kinda earthy and nutty) but the benefits are worth it!

Foodie Friday: Creamy Banana & Cacao Pudding (Dairy-Free / Vegan recipe)

Friday, 15 February 2019

Banana & Cacao Pudding (Dairy-Free / Vegan recipe)
I've been having some major chocolate cravings this week and after a quick look in my fridge, I decided to whip up this Creamy Banana & Cacao Pudding which is a tasty way to use up any overripe bananas that you may have laying around.

This pudding couldn't be simpler to make and if you're into healthy eating, you'll probably have most of the ingredients in your fridge or kitchen cupboard already. If not, you can easily pick them up from any large supermarket and many of the budget discounters such as Aldi and Lidl now stock products like Cacao Powder - just make sure that you buy a 100% raw version that doesn't contain any other ingredients. Alternatively, high street shops like Holland and Barrett and TK Maxx have an excellent selection available, or you can purchase it online.

Cacao Powder is made from unroasted cocoa beans and as a result, retains all of its essential nutrients such as Magnesium and Copper so you get a good health boost from it, as well as a delicious, rich chocolate flavour. Both the Bananas and Avocado in this recipe give the pudding additional vitamins, minerals, and a source of healthy fats for a truly guilt-free dessert to enjoy after dinner. I highly recommend sprinkling over some Pomegranate Seeds and Cacao Nibs for further health benefits, flavour and a yummy crunch!

Banana & Cacao Pudding (Dairy-Free / Vegan recipe)
Ingredients: (makes two standard ramekin-sized puddings)
  • 2 overripe fairtrade Bananas
  • 1 ripe Avocado
  • 200ml Coconut Milk (from a tin)
  • 2tbsp Cacao Powder (I used Bioglan)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 2 tsp Maple or Agave Syrup
  • Pomegranate Seeds & Cacao Nibs (optional, to serve)

Method:
  • Slice up the Bananas and chop up the Avocado into chunks. Place in a food processor and then add in the Vanilla, Cacao Powder, and Maple/Agave Syrup. Blitz until smooth.
  • Give the tin of Coconut Milk a good shake and then measure out 200ml. Switch the food processor back on and pour it in whilst blending. Whizz until you have a thick, creamy and pudding-like consistency.
  • Divide the mixture into two ramekins and pop them in the fridge for half an hour if you want them to set a little more, otherwise, sprinkle over some Pomegranate Seeds and Cacao Nibs if using and dig right in!

Mid-Week Pamper Treats with Fair Squared - Lime Shower Gel, Coconut Body Scrub & Shea Body Butter review

Wednesday, 18 October 2017

Fair Squared - Lime Shower Gel, Coconut Body Scrub & Shea Body Butter review
It's so common to see the words 'natural', 'organic' and 'vegan' on beauty products these days, but what about 'fairtrade'? If your bathroom is absent of the Fairtrade logo, it's time to treat yourself to a pamper with Fair Squared.

Fairtrade is a term that most consumers are aware of when it comes to products like coffee, tea and bananas, but it can apply to any product that contains certified fairtrade ingredients which meet the strict regulations of the Fairtrade Foundation. This important global social movement works with small communities of farmers all over the world to help them trade their goods for a fair price. But it goes so much further than that. Buying certified fairtrade products also helps to fund education, empowers some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people, fights for and protects worker's rights, and sets strong environmental protections to promote sustainability. All in all, buying fairtrade means that everyone involved gets a good deal with a much brighter future, so what's not to love?!

One such brand that puts fairtrade at the heart of what it does is Fair Squared. This ethical cosmetics company produces a range of cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, natural skincare and body care products, and I've been testing out a couple of their gorgeous pampering treats.

Fair Squared - Lime Shower Gel, Coconut Body Scrub & Shea Body Butter review
Fair Squared Lime Shower Gel* (250ml, £8.95, link)
This SLS-free shower gel uses fairtrade Olive Oil from Palestine and fairtrade Limes from Brazil for a truly nourishing and hydrating experience in the shower. It smells fresh and uplifting, and cleanses the whole body without drying out your skin. It's perfect for my dry skin and is free from parabens, phthalates, suflates and PEGs. If Lime isn't your thing, Fair Squared also have a range of other scents available including Vanilla, Coconut, Green Tea and Coffee - yum!

Fair Squared Coconut Body Scrub* (150ml, £8.95, link
For a scrub that smells good enough to eat, this body exfoliator contains tiny fairtrade Coconut Flakes from Thailand to gently remove dull, dead skin cells, revealing brighter, smoother skin in a matter of minutes. This scrub also has fairtrade Olive Oil from Palestine, so it's really moisturising, leaving your skin feeling soft and thoroughly pampered afterwards.

Fair Squared Shea Body Butter* (300ml, £12.95, link)
If you have dry skin like I do, you'll love this Shea Body Butter which is made from a blend of simple natural ingredients including fairtrade Olive Oil and Shea Butter. It has a lovely rich texture and is packed full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to rejuvenate tired, dry skin and restore it to its former glory. The Body Butter sinks in nicely and doesn't feel greasy or sticky afterwards. I know I'll be using this a lot throughout Winter!

Essential Care Organic Coconut Candy Scrub* (200g, £28)

If you've been following my blog for a while, or simply saw my Favourites post last month, you'll know that I have a strong penchant for anything to do with coconut.  I adore the scent, and the miracle moisturising properties of coconut oil are fantastic for my dry skin.  So it should come as no surprise really that I'm currently enamoured with this delectable coconut body scrub from Essential Care (who coincidentally are also one of my favourite natural brands!).
