Currently Loving | The Golden Hour Edit

In between the torrential downpours that we've been having here in the UK (hello Climate Change), there have been these odd little glimpses of sunlight peaking through now and then. As we approach the end of July, I wanted to share a few products that I've been loving lately to celebrate those precious Golden Hour moments and to help brighten your mood if you've been feeling like it'll never stop raining!

Bondi Sands SPF Lip Balm 50+
The Fruity SPF Lip Balm | Bondi Sands Lip Balm SPF 50+ in Tropical Mango* (10g, £4.99, link)

A delightfully cheap and cheerful lip balm with SPF 50+ protection, Bondi Sands has really hit the ball out of the park with this range. Ideal for dreamy beach days and al fresco picnics with friends, these hydrating lip balms soothe dry lips and come in several different flavours. My current fave is Tropical Mango and I'm also quite fond of the Juicy Watermelon. An absolute bargain for only a fiver.

The Perfume Rollerball | Farryn Amber Perfume Oil Roll On in Floral Oud (10ml, RRP £18)

I'm a huge fan of perfume rollerballs and feel that they truly come into their own during the summer months when you want something small and convenient to throw into your carry-on or beach bag. This one from Farryn Amber is a gorgeous heady floral scent with plenty of musky Oud thrown into the mix.

Prismologie Rose Quartz + Manganese Comforting Meridian Balm
The Luxury Aromatherapy Treat | Prismologie Rose Quartz + Manganese Comforting Meridian Balm (75ml, prices vary)

I came across this Prismologie aromatherapy treat whilst browsing the beauty section of TK Maxx (a great place to find a whole host of bargains from big and niche brands) and I instantly fell in love with the box packaging. Upon opening it at home, I was delighted to be greeted by the beautiful scent of fresh roses. combined in a chunky twist-up balm stick. This multi-purpose balm wand glides onto the skin and is infused with Rosehip Oil to gently moisturise whilst delivering aromatherapy benefits. A lovely treat for less than a tenner and they had plenty of others to choose from if you're not a fan of Rose.

Iconic London Kissed By The Sun Multi-Use Cheek Glow in Date Night
The Glowy Bronzer/Highlighter | Iconic London Kissed By The Sun Multi-Use Cheek Glow in Date Night (5g, £25, link)

You guys know how much I love a multi-purpose product and I fell head over heels for this much-hyped newbie from Iconic London. Yes, this was definitely one of those 'Instagram made me do it' moments and I have no regrets! These Kissed By The Sun Multi-Use Cheek Glows are insanely beautiful and I had a hard time choosing a favourite. In the end, I opted for Date Night which is the most perfect glowy bronzer-meets-highlighter for olive skin tones. This baby really pops against a summer tan! The powder compact is buttery soft and super blendable so you can apply a light dusting or go to town and layer it up for a more intense glow.

The It-Girl Aviators | Versace Aviator Sunglasses (gift from a friend)

Despite my ever-growing collection of sunglasses, I didn't actually own a pair of aviators until one of my good friends kindly gifted me this pair of Versace Aviator Sunglasses for my birthday last month. Since then, I've been wearing them all the time and I love how they go with pretty much every summer outfit imaginable. Smart and chic, they are one of those classics that never goes out of style so I know I'll be wearing these every summer until the end of time.

The Vintage Summer Bag | Jane Shilton Round Bag (charity shop find)

Quick confession, every year I hate the trend of those straw/wicker bags, mainly because I dislike the feel of them so much. Instead, I was on the hunt for a light-coloured small bag and found this beautiful vintage Jane Shilton bag in a local Oxfam charity shop for the bargain price of £6.99. The soft woven texture gives off beach vibes and the long strap can be worn across the body. One of my favourite purchases of the year so far!

Currently Loving: Apostrophal Handmade Necklaces - Black Onyx, Moonstone & Azurite Malachite review

Friday, 10 February 2023

Pretty gemstone jewellery is a weakness of mine and I'm utterly smitten with these shiny new purchases from an indie online shop called Apostrophal.

I first came across Apostrophal on Instagram and they are a fairly new company, having started in 2020. They specialise in selling a quirky range of eco essentials and sustainable artisan handicrafts such as jewellery, plant pots, toiletries, bowls, candles, and kitchenalia. Through their online shop, they have created a community that helps to support independent makers and businesses, whilst offering ethical consumers a beautiful edit of handpicked products.

When I saw that they recently had a sale on, I couldn't help but have a good scroll through their site when I was shopping for a friend's birthday gift. As always though, a couple of additional items may have somehow made their way into my shopping basket (I honestly don't know how that happened...oops..),  and I'm now the proud owner of some new handmade necklaces.

Black Onyx Juliet Necklace

Onyx has been a favourite of mine for a very long time and I have a small collection of black Onyx pieces that I cherish in my jewellery box. Symbolising strength and perseverance, Onyx comes from the Greek word of the same name meaning 'claw', 'nail' and veined gem so you can see why it has an established history with the concept of strength in more ways than one.

Handmade by one of Apostrophal's handpicked artisans Adeline, this necklace features a high-quality black Onyx gemstone in a square open bezel setting. With a multi-faceted surface, it captures the light beautifully. Looks stunning worn on its own or layered with other gold chained necklaces.

Moonstone Lunar Necklace

The moon has held great significance for many cultures and generations as human beings have looked up into the sky to question the meaning of life and what our place is in the universe. In turn, the Moonstone gem represents a connection to the divine feminine, linking the moon with cyclical changes, fertility, hope, and new beginnings.

Composed of a lunar-shaped smooth white moonstone, if you look carefully, you'll see a protective Eye engraved into the stone itself. Also made by the artisan Adeline, this unique necklace is a sublime statement piece.

Azurite Malachite Necklace

My last pick is this captivating Azure Malachite. I'll have to admit that whilst I was already familiar with the meanings of the gemstones above, it was simply the beguiling colour of Azure Malachite that made me choose this piece of jewellery.

I was pleased to discover that Azure Malachite is not just a pretty gem. It's linked to restoring Chakra balance, invoking calm feelings, and a reduction in anxiety, as well as being seen to drawing out negative energies from the body. For those interested in the concept of an 'ego death', it's believed that Malachite can help to dissolve egocentric personality traits such as arrogance. Interesting!

Gift Wild Narwhal Washbag* (£17.99, link)

I always feel that toiletry and washbags are well received by fellow beauty and travel lovers, the latter of which sparks a little adventure as you can wonder where the receipent may take your gift on their next travels! Gift Wild have a lovely range of eco-friendly washbags which are made from organic, sustainably sourced and fair trade cotton. An intricate Narwhal illustration (original artwork by Penny Smallshire) adorns the front of the bag, whilst a gold-coloured zip finishes it off beautifully. Inside, the bag is kept simple and plain, with plenty of room for all of the essentials.

Gift Wild Swift Bird Shopping Bag* (£19.99)

One of the most practical gifts is a good old shopping bag and you can never have too many of these to make sure that you're never tempted to pick up a plastic bag ever again! As seen in BBC Wildlife, this beautiful Swift Bird Shopping Bag features a large art print of two swifts by Penny Smallshire and would make a brilliant gift for an avid bird watcher; in fact 10% of the sale goes straight to the RSPB. This bag is an oversized A4 size with a thick, sturdy handle, so there's lots of space for your groceries, books or bird watching kit.

Like the washbag above, Gift Wild's Shopping Bags are made from the same organic, sustainably sourced and fairtrade cotton so they are excellent quality and are a far better option for the environment.

Worth The Hype: Laruce Luxury Makeup Brushes - Flat Foundation, Angle Contour & Highlighter Brushes review

Tuesday, 13 July 2021

A favourite amongst many American beauty bloggers, Laruce has been making some noise online since they came onto the beauty scene in 2019. But are they worth the hype?

Pre-Covid times, I was always a massive makeup fan and have been ever since I was a teenager. My arsenal of makeup brushes and tools has grown so much over the years, and I've tried out all of the big-name brands, alongside the niche and indie companies that produce them. You might think that a blusher brush, for example, is pretty much a standard shape so they'd all be the same, right? Wrong.

Makeup brushes vary a lot! And sometimes, you get what you pay for. Case in point; Laruce.

I recently won a set of Laruce makeup brushes in a Twitter giveaway, and I was absolutely thrilled after seeing so many American beauty bloggers use them in makeup tutorials.  Laruce is completely vegan-friendly and cruelty-free, and the brand as a whole prides itself on being inclusive and actively encourages individualism, unity, compassion and empathy online.

I received three of their brushes to try out; the LR335 Flat Foundation Brush, LR334 Angle Contour Brush and LR308 Highlighter Brush. The bad news is that Laruce isn't readily available in the UK yet, but *spoiler alert*, it wouldn't surprise me if they announced a UK stockist pretty soon! To give you a rough idea of the prices, they start at around $26 for a small individual lip brush to $350 for a complete set.

These brushes all have a chunky black plastic handle with a moulded grip which makes them super easy to hold and work with. I think this fits in perfectly with their inclusivity ethos as I imagine that many disabled beauty fans may find these brushes easier to hold.

The bristles are synthetic as they are cruelty-free, and they are crazy soft! I would rate these in my top 3 brands for the softest brushes ever, they're that good. Pure luxury!

Let's have a quick rundown of each individual brush, starting with the LR335 Flat Foundation Brush. With its dense but flexible, flat-top kabuki-style head, this brush worked incredibly well with both liquid and powder/mineral foundation formats. It blends and buffs everything into the skin so smoothly and effortlessly for a gorgeous flawless finish. I cannot fault this brush at all - I love it!

The LR334 Angle Contour Brush has a great sloping angled head with the same style of densely packed but flexible bristles as the foundation brush. The shape of this brush is ideal for beauty beginners as it makes applying blushers and bronzers virtually impossible to get wrong as it does most of the work for you; even if you apply with a heavy hand, the bristles just seem to fan everything out for an instantly softer, more diffused look. I've tried it with liquid and powder/mineral products with superb results.

Perhaps surprisingly, my favourite of the three is the LR308 Highlighter Brush. I just love the slightly longer, oval-shaped brush head and the bristles are just so silky soft. This brush is the best for those little finishing touches like a gentle sweep of highlighter across the tops of the cheekbones, or as a setting brush for undereye concealer. Save this one to use with your favourite powder products.

Overall thoughts?
I'm thoroughly impressed by these Laruce brushes and would certainly recommend them to any makeup brush fan. If you're looking for a cruelty-free, high-end, luxury alternative to brushes from brands such as MAC, these are even better quality, and much softer and easier to work with. They also wash up well with no shedding issues so far after two months of regular use.

What are your favourite cruelty-free makeup brushes?

Bank Holiday Treat: Fall Back In Love With Dressing Up with Maggio

Monday, 31 May 2021

With many Covid restrictions now lifting across the UK, it's time to fall back in love with the art of dressing up for all those social catchups that you've been missing out on!

I don't know about you, but I feel like I've been living in loungewear for the best part of a year now. I can't even remember the last time that I felt good about dressing up or made the effort to even look in the mirror before leaving the house. Sound familiar? You're not alone.

Whilst I've enjoyed many aspects of WFH life, I've really missed spending time with friends and family so I've been looking forward to getting back to normal and that includes dressing up.

Shoes are an easy way to get back into the swing of things and there's something about a fancy pair of heels that really add that special finishing touch to your favourite outfit. I was over the moon when Maggio offered to help me through this style crisis by sending me a pair of their beautiful shoes to make me fall back in love with dressing up.

Maggio describes itself as an 'affordable luxury' shoe brand for women who want to stand out. All of their shoes are handmade in a family-owned factory in Italy, with all of the designs custom made by the brand's founder, Marianna Kontogeorgos.

I feel it's important to support independent, female-led businesses and when it comes to shoes, you get what you pay for so now's the time to ditch those cheap fast-fashion heels that break after one season, and invest in a pair that will last you for many, many years to come.

I opted for Maggio's new Eudora heels in Navy Blue as so many of my shoes are just plain back, it was lovely to have the opportunity to try something different but still very classic and timeless.

In Greek mythology, Eudora was the daughter of Nereus and Dorris. She was one of the 50 daughters called the Nereides also known as nymphs who are female spirits of sea waters. It was said that the Nereides were goddesses of the sea's rich bounty and protectors of sailors and fishermen, coming to the aid of those in distress. Nereides are associated with the Aegean Sea where they dwell in the depths in a golden palace.

I'm utterly smitten with these shoes! Not only are they comfortable to wear thanks to classic French-inspired cutout design, but the easy slip-on style and 7.5cm kitten heel make them remarkably easy to walk in and the navy blue and gold design go with a range of different outfits and colours. The suede and leather materials feel incredibly high quality and they feel much more expensive than they actually are, plus the gold underside adds a subtle extra touch of glamour. It's a win all-round!

Available in three colours, this is a Bank Holiday treat that you'll truly treasure having in your shoe collection.

The Weekend Post: How to Get the Engagement Ring You Really Want #AD

Friday, 2 April 2021

Choosing the right engagement ring is no easy task. It is the ring you will be wearing for the rest of your life. That’s why you need to ensure that you absolutely love it right off the bat. But making sure that you get just the right ring can be a bit tricky.

That’s why it is best to approach this matter carefully, so as not to come off too controlling or crazy. Help your significant other make the best choice by tactically approaching this matter and offering some (not-so-subtle) hints.

Research your options together

One of the best ways to ensure that you get the engagement ring you’ve always wanted is to simply show it to your partner. But don’t just simply show them the ring you’ve already chosen. Instead, talk to your partner and see if they would be interested in doing some joint research. That way you can both explore various options out there, while you will get the opportunity to drop hints whenever you come across something you like. Since you are starting your life together, you can also read this cost guide and settle on a budget you both feel comfortable with. This way both of you will get a better picture of what’s out there and what are your options when it comes to choosing the right engagement ring.

Show pictures of your preferred style

On the other hand, if you don’t want to go with such a direct approach, you can always take a more subtle route. For instance, if you’ve already talked about the proposal and you know that it is coming, you can start putting together a proposal scrapbook. Here, you can print out various pictures of engagement rings that fit your style. Then, simply leave your scrapbook somewhere where your partner will surely find it a hope that they take the hint. Alternatively, you can always “accidentally” stay logged in on Pinterest on your joint computer, right on the page where you pinned all the engagement rings you really like.

Ask a friend to help you out

The next option is to rely on either your or their best friend. Talk to a friend you know will be willing to help both of you out and ask them for a bit of help. You can either suggest to your partner to ask the friend in question if they ever need help. Or you can simply ask your friend to get involved directly and simply offer help to your partner. Chances are neither of them will deny.

Learn to trust your partner

In the end, we can sometimes be a bit too controlling without even realizing it. Since your partner obviously loves you, chances are that they know more about you than you may think. So, it may be a good idea to simply let go and allow your partner to surprise you. Tell your partner that the ball is entirely in their court when it comes to choosing the right engagement ring. Let go of any control and simply allow yourself to be surprised. Chances are you’ll end up loving the ring you receive even more than the one you might have picked out yourself.

Engagements are beautiful but people sometimes make them into a bigger deal than they actually are. If you end up stressing too much about it you can easily forget to enjoy this wonderful part of your life. So, maybe just try to relax and let go and trust us, everything will turn out great in the end.

My Style: Nordgreen Philosopher Rose Gold Mesh Strap Watch S/S20 review + Nordgreen's Giving Back Programme

Thursday, 9 July 2020

Nordgreen Philosopher Rose Gold Mesh Design review
The simplicity and contemporary innovations of Scandinavian designs are admired around the world, and for a truly classic accessory to complement your daily attire, you can't beat a Nordgreen Watch

Based in Demark's impossibly cool and chic capital of Copenhagen, Nordgreen have partnered with the renowned Scandinavian designer Jakob Wagner to design their latest Spring/Summer 2020 collection. Well, I say it's an S/S collection, but these pieces are really investments that you'll want to wear for years and years to come!

I was lucky enough to be asked if I'd like to review one of their watches, and after browsing their effortlessly sophisticated range of watches on their website, I decided to choose the Philosopher Rose Gold Watch in the classic Mesh strap design.

Nordgreen Philosopher Rose Gold Mesh Design review
Presented in a long navy blue gift box, each Nordgreen timepiece comes complete with a manual, an engraved serial number on the back of the watch and a Certificate of Authenticity that bears a unique identification number. The latter two are part of Nordgreen's Giving Back Programme which enables each customer to choose from one of their three great causes via their website by inputting their serial and identification numbers. These causes include Health, Education and the Environment initiatives by NGOs which bring about real and immediate change such as:-

  • Health - Water For Good - each watch purchased provides two months of clean water to one person in the Central African republic.
  • Education - Pratham UK - each watch purchased provides a month of education to a child in India.
  • Environment - Cool Earth - each watch purchased preserves 50sqm of rainforest in Latin America.

I very much value brands that make commitments to causes like these and I was pleased to find lots of information on their website which explains in detail what these NGOs do so that you can choose the one that you'd like to support. For my watch, I chose the Cool Earth cause as the world's rainforests are in desperate need of being conserved.

Nordgreen Philosopher Rose Gold Mesh Design review
Back to the watch, when I opened the box, I found it to be even more beautiful in real life than what it looks like online. Nordgreen's Philosopher watches have been designed to 'celebrate our ability to think differently, learn from the past, act now and create a better future', which I couldn't agree more with. The asymmetric second hand that appears to continuously slice through time, is designed to remind of exactly this, as the watch is acting as an instrument of time, whilst the conical shape of the face creates a sharp two-piece dial that draws the eye to the centre of the timepiece, a reminder of being present in the moment. Isn't that just a beautiful way of thinking about time?

This watch features a Japanese Quartz movement and is made from Stainless Steel that offers water resistance up to 3ATM (rain resistant). It also offers a fully customisable and interchangeable strap, and I love the classic mesh design which looks both timeless and contemporary.

Available in Rose Gold, Gold, Silver and Gun Metal, it's a truly beautiful everyday accessory that I'll be sure to treasure as time goes by.

The Weekend Post: 6 Items You Need To Look Classy This Winter #AD

Sunday, 24 November 2019

Ladies, it is no secret that most of us are more focused on our fashion choices during the summer days. We spend more time than we want to admit in front of a mirror, trying to create a perfect outfit for a sunny afternoon or night of dancing underneath the stars. However, things change when the winter comes, and staying warm and comfortable becomes far more important than looking stylish. Luckily, you can still look completely fabulous and classy this winter without having to sacrifice your comfort. Include these following items into your wardrobe and you will easily pull off a classic, timeless look.

A little black dress

Regardless of what time of year it is, this evergreen item never goes out of style and can help you get ready in a minute for any type of event. It doesn’t matter whether you are going to a classy party or having a cup of coffee with your friends, in this versatile piece of clothing you will always look your best. You can wear it with a pair of black pumps, a sexy pair of stilettos or even over a white button-down shirt, depending on where you are going.

An interesting piece of jewellery

We can all agree that the right piece of jewellery can elevate any outfit. During the winter when most of your body is covered with layers and layers of clothes, opt for a necklace with an interesting pendant or a great-looking pair of earrings with moonstone like those from Moon Magic. A classy piece of jewellery and a bold lip colour are always a good combo, so dare to attract some attention.

Classic cardigan

Just as the little black dress, a nice cardigan can be styled to look any way you want. If you are aiming for a more hipster look, baggy grandpa cardigan paired with skinny jeans is the way to go. In case you want to look classy and sophisticated, wear a cardigan instead of a hoodie when going to a concert or a football game.

Brown knee-high boots

There are so many ways you can wear brown boots, and for some reason, they always look a little bit classier than the black ones. Since you will wear them during the winter, make sure you don’t opt for a heel that is taller than two inches, or you won’t feel comfortable, especially when walking in the snow. You can wear these boots with skinny jeans, skirts, leggings, and dresses and not make a mistake, so find a combination that looks best on you.

Dark-wash boot-cut jeans

Yes, skinny jeans and boyfriend jeans are more modern, but a classic pair of boot-cut jeans never goes out of style and is perfect for those cold winter days. Whether you are going to dinner, getting ready for work or simply going for a walk, you can always rely on these jeans to make you look good. Choose a pair without any fading or embellishments if you are going for the classy look and make sure to have them hemmed to perfectly hit the bottom of your heel. You can wear these jeans with black pumps and a white dress shirt, or take it up a notch with a back blazer and a fabulous scarf.

A brightly-coloured scarf

Don’t be afraid to add some colour to those gloomy winter days! It is amazing how with just one brightly-coloured scarf an outfit can look more classy, stylish, and complete. This simple piece of clothing will keep your neck warm as well as help you pull off a fancy look without trying too hard.

With these items, you will be able to great the following season looking classy and gorgeous without sacrificing your comfort.

Autumn Beauty Buys - Under £13 - #HelloOctober

Monday, 7 October 2019

Autumn Beauty Buys #HelloOctober
Need a little beauty pick-me-up? These are some of my recommended Autumn Beauty Buys to treat your nails and hair to this season - all under £13!

Treats For Nails: Leighton Denny Slick Tips Hydrating Cuticle Oil* (12ml, £12, link) & Leighton Denny Nail Polish in Inkjet* (12ml, £12, link)

Autumn is a good time to starting taking more care of your nails, as the colder weather can cause them to become drier and more brittle than usual which can lead to weakness and breakages (central heating also has a drying effect on nails and skin). Massaging in a drop or two of cuticle oil can help though and Leighton Denny's Slick Tips Hydrating Cuticle Oil is a lovely formula to try that's enriched with Jojoba Oil and Vitamins A, B and E to instantly moisturise, smooth and soften for stronger nails overall.

I've also been embracing the return of darker colours for nails and in particular, have fallen head over heels in love with another favourite from Leighton Denny. Their Nail Polish in Inkjet is the most stunning rich navy blue with a metallic silk-like finish - I always get compliments when I wear it!

Design. ME Puff. ME Light Hair Volumising Powder
Treats For Hair: Design. ME Puff. ME Light Hair Volumising Powder* (9.1g, £9.95, link)

It may have a long name, but Design. ME's Puff. ME Light Hair Volumising Powder is a must-try for anyone who has fine or difficult to style hair like mine. Free from sulphates, parabens and salt, this vegan-friendly magical volumiser helps to add texture and body to even baby-fine hair thanks to its super lightweight consistency - I was quite surprised by how you can't really tell or feel that you've used any product in your hair. Add it directly to the roots and style as normal - super easy!

A Cruelty-Free & Vegan-Friendly Alternative To Silk Pillowcases: Morning Glamour Satin Pillowcase
A Cruelty-Free & Vegan-Friendly Alternative To Silk Pillowcases: Morning Glamour Satin Pillowcase* (£12.99 for one, link)

Silk pillowcases have long been a traditional beauty secret of many A-list actresses and celebrities, as well as countless skincare and beauty gurus singing their praises over the years, but what if you want a cruelty-free and vegan-friendly alternative? Look no further, Morning Glamour's range of Satin Pillowcases has got your back!

Available in several different colours to fit your bedroom colour scheme, these pillowcases are just as luxurious feeling as their silk counterparts and help to prevent hair breakages and night time skin wrinkles as it provides a smooth surface to sleep on. They're also great for damaged or frizzy hair types and are non-absorbent so your skin and hair retains moisture better throughout the night - genius!

What's on your Autumn beauty wishlist?
