Currently Loving | The Golden Hour Edit

In between the torrential downpours that we've been having here in the UK (hello Climate Change), there have been these odd little glimpses of sunlight peaking through now and then. As we approach the end of July, I wanted to share a few products that I've been loving lately to celebrate those precious Golden Hour moments and to help brighten your mood if you've been feeling like it'll never stop raining!

Bondi Sands SPF Lip Balm 50+
The Fruity SPF Lip Balm | Bondi Sands Lip Balm SPF 50+ in Tropical Mango* (10g, £4.99, link)

A delightfully cheap and cheerful lip balm with SPF 50+ protection, Bondi Sands has really hit the ball out of the park with this range. Ideal for dreamy beach days and al fresco picnics with friends, these hydrating lip balms soothe dry lips and come in several different flavours. My current fave is Tropical Mango and I'm also quite fond of the Juicy Watermelon. An absolute bargain for only a fiver.

The Perfume Rollerball | Farryn Amber Perfume Oil Roll On in Floral Oud (10ml, RRP £18)

I'm a huge fan of perfume rollerballs and feel that they truly come into their own during the summer months when you want something small and convenient to throw into your carry-on or beach bag. This one from Farryn Amber is a gorgeous heady floral scent with plenty of musky Oud thrown into the mix.

Prismologie Rose Quartz + Manganese Comforting Meridian Balm
The Luxury Aromatherapy Treat | Prismologie Rose Quartz + Manganese Comforting Meridian Balm (75ml, prices vary)

I came across this Prismologie aromatherapy treat whilst browsing the beauty section of TK Maxx (a great place to find a whole host of bargains from big and niche brands) and I instantly fell in love with the box packaging. Upon opening it at home, I was delighted to be greeted by the beautiful scent of fresh roses. combined in a chunky twist-up balm stick. This multi-purpose balm wand glides onto the skin and is infused with Rosehip Oil to gently moisturise whilst delivering aromatherapy benefits. A lovely treat for less than a tenner and they had plenty of others to choose from if you're not a fan of Rose.

Iconic London Kissed By The Sun Multi-Use Cheek Glow in Date Night
The Glowy Bronzer/Highlighter | Iconic London Kissed By The Sun Multi-Use Cheek Glow in Date Night (5g, £25, link)

You guys know how much I love a multi-purpose product and I fell head over heels for this much-hyped newbie from Iconic London. Yes, this was definitely one of those 'Instagram made me do it' moments and I have no regrets! These Kissed By The Sun Multi-Use Cheek Glows are insanely beautiful and I had a hard time choosing a favourite. In the end, I opted for Date Night which is the most perfect glowy bronzer-meets-highlighter for olive skin tones. This baby really pops against a summer tan! The powder compact is buttery soft and super blendable so you can apply a light dusting or go to town and layer it up for a more intense glow.

The It-Girl Aviators | Versace Aviator Sunglasses (gift from a friend)

Despite my ever-growing collection of sunglasses, I didn't actually own a pair of aviators until one of my good friends kindly gifted me this pair of Versace Aviator Sunglasses for my birthday last month. Since then, I've been wearing them all the time and I love how they go with pretty much every summer outfit imaginable. Smart and chic, they are one of those classics that never goes out of style so I know I'll be wearing these every summer until the end of time.

The Vintage Summer Bag | Jane Shilton Round Bag (charity shop find)

Quick confession, every year I hate the trend of those straw/wicker bags, mainly because I dislike the feel of them so much. Instead, I was on the hunt for a light-coloured small bag and found this beautiful vintage Jane Shilton bag in a local Oxfam charity shop for the bargain price of £6.99. The soft woven texture gives off beach vibes and the long strap can be worn across the body. One of my favourite purchases of the year so far!

5 Natural & Cruelty-Free Fragrances To Try This Summer

Thursday, 27 May 2021

The sun has finally come out to play and Summer definitely feels like it's on its way! As the new season approaches, I thought I'd put together an edit of some of my favourite cruelty-freenatural fragrances for the Summer months ahead.

Try If You Like Sensual & Exotic Scents: Balm Balm Single Note Ylang Ylang Eau de Parfum* (33ml, £22, link)

Regular readers will know that I'm obsessed with all things Ylang Ylang so this natural perfume from Balm Balm had to be my number one pick. If you haven't tried these Balm Balm Single Note Eau de Parfums yet, you're truly missing out! Made from simply essential oil and pure grain alcohol, these fragrances are 100% vegan, natural and organic (certified by the Soil Association) and feature just a single essential oil for the purest outcome. Ylang Ylang is a bold and sensual perfume and can be worn on its own or layered with other single-note fragrances from the Balm Balm range.

Try If You Like Happy & Uplifting Scents: Kathleen Natural Citrus Cheer Roll On Perfume* (10ml, £18.40, link)

For those who prefer an alcohol-free fragrance, you can't go wrong with these lovely Kathleen Natural rollerball perfumes. 100% natural, cruelty-free and vegan-friendly, my favourite is called Citrus Cheer which sums up this scent so well! This essential oil blend has top notes of Lemon and a heart of Rosewood which is layered over a base of Geranium. Happy and uplifting, it's guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Try If You Like Fruity & Fresh Scents: Pacifica Tuscan Blood Orange Roll-On Perfume* (10ml, £12.99, link)

With its slim and chic design, it's easy to see why the Pacifica Roll-On Perfumes are so popular and I've tried out various scents from this range over the years. The one that I keep repurchasing on a yearly basis though is the Tuscan Blood Orange Perfume which marries together juicy Blood Orange with zesty Italian Mandarin, plus lovely sparkling Raspberry and Strawberry notes to keep the Summer vibes going strong all season long. Natural, cruelty-free and suitable for vegans.

Try If You Like Sweet & Comforting Scents: Bloomtown The Café Roll-On Infused Oil* (10ml, £6, link)

If you're on a budget, I highly recommend the Roll-On Infused Oils from the British natural brand Bloomtown. Handmade in Truro, Cornwall, these are seriously underrated and they are an absolute steal at just £6! The range is certified cruelty-free, vegan, and palm-oil-free, and they have six signature scents to choose from. I love The Café which is a sublime blend of Hazelnut, Vanilla, Coffee and Chocolate for a sweet and cosy fragrance. Not only that, but these double up as nourishing oils for your skin and hair too and can be used to hydrate dry skin areas, as well as smoothing split ends - pretty clever indeed!

Try If You Like Contemporary & Fun Scents: Flaya Island Eau de Parfum* (10ml, £12.99, link)

Flaya is a new brand discovery for me and I was delighted to come across their natural, organic and vegan-friendly perfumes when I was browsing LoveLula one evening. This small, family-run business specialises in fragrances that are created from only natural and plant-based ingredients. Each perfume is handmade, hand-bottled and hand-packed in the UK, and the brand is proud to have several certifications from a range of ethical companies including the Vegan Society and the Ethical Consumer Best Buy label. I decided to try their Island fragrance recently and I've been smitten with it ever since. It's a warm, fun and modern scent with happy fresh Citrus notes combined with sensual undertones of Ylang Ylang.

Tuesday, 29 December 2020

It's the last LoveLula Beauty Box of 2020 and with an overall value of £50, it features a range of popular green beauty brands with an amazing mix of skincare, pampering treats and fragrance. Read on to discover what's inside!

Soul Tree Hand & Foot Cream (RRP £14.03)
You know my philosophy - you can never have too many hand creams, especially these days! This multi-purpose Hand & Foot Cream from Soul Tree is based on a natural Ayurvedic formula and it instantly transforms and heals dry and cracked skin. I've found this to be incredibly rich and moisturising so it's a brilliant winter staple for me!

The Castillian Soap Company Travel Duo (RRP £9)
If you haven't tried a Castille Soap yet, you're in for a treat, especially if you enjoy using all-natural products for everyday tasks. Made from a fully biodegradable liquid formula that has an organic base and a blend of natural vegetable oils, Castille Soaps can be used to wash clothes, makeup brushes, your face, your body etc, and they're often a good option for those who have sensitive skin due to the small number of ingredients used. This handy travel-sized duo features two bestsellers from The Castillian Soap Company; their Fragrance-Free soap and the Lavender soap.

Ayumi Fairness Daily Intensive Facial Night Cream (RRP £8.99)
Skincare fans will enjoy adding Ayumi's Fairness Daily Intensive Facial Night Cream to their evening routines. This clever Ayurvedic blend of nourishing botanicals helps to repair, plump and rehydrate the skin, whilst hardworking natural peptides add radiance, glow and luminosity for all skin types. I'm excited to try it!

October Empties: Products I've Used Up

Wednesday, 4 November 2020

Take a break from refreshing that news button and catch up with my latest Empties instead! Here's everything that I've managed to finish up recently and which ones I'll be repurchasing again.

Odacité Black Mint Cleanser* (review)
If you follow me on Instagram, you'll have no doubt spotted this Black Mint gel cleanser in my skincare routines over on IG stories over the past 2-3 years - I've gone through a few of these! It's one of the only cleansers that I've used which has charcoal in it that doesn't strip or dry out my skin, and I love how cooling and refreshing it is so it's absolutely perfect to use first thing in the morning! I highly recommend it for oily/combination skin that's prone to breakouts. Repurchase? Already have.

Hairy Jayne Floral Hair Perfume & Heat Protector Spray* (review)
It's been a weird year and I've found that I've hardly reached for certain beauty products that I used to see as a regular essential due to working from home. One such product is this beautiful Hair Perfume & Heat Protector Spray from Hairy Jayne, a brand that I've used for years. This is a great 2-in-1 product for anyone who wants to quickly refresh their hair whilst they're styling it, and this floral scent is just gorgeous. Repurchase? Will do when normal life resumes as it's taken me nearly a year to just finish this one bottle!

Aurelia Botanical Cream Deodorant* (review)
An award-winning deodorant for many reasons, if you have struggled to find a natural deo that works for you, try this! It has a lovely fresh and herbal-like fragrance but most importantly, it works a treat. I mainly used it during summer when I wanted a harder-working deodorant to keep me fresh all day. Expensive yes, but so worth it and it lasts a good while too. Repurchase? Yes.

Ben & Anna Natural Toothpaste White Fluoride* (review)
Looking for a plastic free toothpaste? This ethical and natural toothpaste is packaged in a fully recyclable glass jar with a metal lid and works in pretty much the same manner as a regular toothpaste - all you're doing differently is applying from a jar instead of squeezing it out from a tube. I like this one as it's free from SLS but still has fluoride in it, though Ben & Anna do make fluoride-free toothpastes if you prefer trying one of those instead. Repurchase? Yes.

Friendly Soap Hair & Body Bar in Lavender & Geranium (travel size)
I don't remember where this came from, perhaps a beauty box? I'm glad I discovered it anyway as it's such a lovely soap and I really enjoyed the relaxing Lavender & Geranium fragrance. Repurchase? Yes, I'll definitely look more into this brand.

Natura Siberica Strengthening Nail & Hand Cream
My hands need all the help they can get these days and Natura Siberica's Strengthening Nail & Hand Cream ticks all the right boxes. It's very moisturising without feeling greasy or sticky and does seem to help strengthen my nails which is always a winner in my book. Repurchase? Will do once I've used up some of my other hand creams first.

Balance Me Congested Skin Serum (travel size)
The 'maskne' struggle continues but luckily this Congested Skin Serum from Balance Me helps to drastically reduce the size of blemishes before they erupt into a bigger mess, making them much more manageable and easier to get rid of. If you don't have maskne, it will work just as well on any congested areas, especially oilier T-zones and foreheads, basically anywhere that's prone to spots. Repurchase? Yes.

Nature's Notes Lambada Soap* (review)
A new favourite indie soap company that I discovered earlier in the year, I was very sad to use up the last of their Lambada Soap in the shower the other day! With a blend of Sweet Orange, Patchouli & Ginger, it smelt amazing and left my skin feeling soft and cared for. Definitely check them out if you're looking for wonderful palm-oil free soapsRepurchase? Already working my way through another one!

Ermana Comfort Balm* (review)
It's that time of year again when the temperature drops and I'm reaching for all of my multipurpose balms to help save my skin. This one from Ermana is a great choice as it soothes and hydrates quickly so you can use it on any area that needs some extra TLC. Repurchase? Will do once I've used up some other similar products first.

Trilogy Very Gentle Cleansing Cream(review)
By far, one of the best cream cleansers that I've ever tried for sensitive skin, I've used Trilogy's Very Gentle Cleansing Cream for a few years now and always go back to it whenever my skin is playing up. In fact, it's one of those staples that I always have in my bathroom cabinet as it reduces irritation and redness fast and adds essential moisture at the same time. Repurchase? Already have!

Tropic Beauty Booster Sheer Foundation in Warm Beige(review)
A summer favourite of mine, Tropic's Beauty Booster Sheer Foundation is perfect for anyone who likes a light coverage that doesn't feel like you're wearing any makeup, but still delivers a 'my skin but better' finish. I've recommended it so many times to family and friends and it has the added bonus of SPF 35. Repurchase? Will do next summer.

Balm Balm Ylang Ylang Eau De Parfum(travel size, review)
For a fuss-free natural and organic fragrance, you can't go wrong with the beautiful single note perfumes from Balm Balm. I've had the pleasure of trying out the whole range over the years and Ylang Ylang is still a firm fave, especially for evenings out and long summer nights. Repurchase? Yes.

P.S - How To Recycle Your Beauty Empties!

All of the glass and easy-to-recycle plastic PET empties will be put into my council's blue bin kerbside recycling scheme, but for the harder-to-recycle stuff, I will be:-

  • Recycling the pumps, lids and atomisers with Neal's Yard Remedies - more info at the bottom of their website here.
  • Recycling any other products that my local council doesn't accept at The Body Shop, L'Occitane or with Garnier's Terracycle partnership - more info here.

What have you used up recently?

Introducing: Typology - Vegan, Ethical & Natural Skincare - My Personalised AM & PM Routine for Oily/Combination Skin

Sunday, 14 June 2020

Introducing: Typology - Vegan, Ethical & Natural Skincare
Launched in the UK just last month, I was very honoured to be part of a lucky few green beauty bloggers, who were sent packages from Typology to test out some of their natural skincare ahead of its release date. This is definitely a brand for serious skincare fans and I couldn't wait to try a whole new routine!

Typology describe themselves as a 'clean, genderless and 100% digital' natural skincare brand who are based in Paris, and they certainly have their eye on the prize with their current plans to expand further afield. Their mission is to promote critical thinking within the personal care spectrum whilst demystifying the skincare industry and breaking a couple of rules along the way, so you can see why they grabbed my attention as soon as I received an email introducing me to the brand.

Created by Ning Li, founder of MADE.com, Typography has 'future cult status' written all over it. From their ethical and vegan-friendly credentials, effective and active natural ingredients, to a strong commitment to sustainability and of course, that super sleek and chic aesthetic, Typography is a brand that's easy to fall in love with from the get-go.

Introducing: Typology - Vegan, Ethical & Natural Skincare
My Personal Prescription with Typography
After answering a couple of questions about my skin, highlighting any specific concerns that I currently have, a personal prescription was quickly drawn up and this involves all of the products that I was very kindly sent to test out. The prescription card went into detail about my skin diagnosis to help me understand why the products had been chosen and I feel this was an excellent introduction to the way that the brand works overall, and would be most helpful to consumers to better educate them about their skin.

My main skin concerns at the moment are balancing my oily/combination type, reducing breakouts, blemishes, redness and inflammation, and protecting the natural skin barrier against oxidative stressors such as pollution.

AM Routine
My AM routine prescription consisted of just three products; a cleansing bar, hydrolate toner and a specific serum based on my menstrual cycle.

Typology Solid Purifying Cleansing Bar* (100g, £11.80, link)
It's been a while since I've used a solid cleansing bar to wash my face as I automatically gravitate towards gel and cream cleansers, so trying a bar was a pleasant change from the norm. This Purifying Cleansing Bar is made from 100% natural ingredients and features cold-saponified plant-based oils and fats to create the soap. These include a blend of Organic Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil and Shea Butter (great for soothing, repairing, softening and nourishing the skin), plus purifying actives of Organic Eucalyptus and Spearmint Essential Oils and Organic Nettle Powder which reduce the size of the sebaceous glands, regulates sebum production, heals damaged skin and helps to balance it overall. It's easy to use - just wet and lather by the sink or in the shower and rinse off. My skin felt thoroughly refreshed and clean without the usual tightness or dryness that sometimes occurs from using purifying cleansers.

Typology Organic Peppermint Hydrolate* (100ml, £8.80, link)
I followed up with a reusable cotton pad that had been soaked in the Organic Peppermint Hydrolate and this is one of the most invigorating and refreshing products I've ever used on my face! Distilled from Organic Peppermint Leaves (derived from the Lamiaceae family that's native to France), the Hydrolate is a wonderfully simplistic but effective toner which has natural purifying and astringent properties to help tighten pores and keep sebum in check. It also helps to soothe any inflammation or redness, but as always, do remember to do a patch test first if you have sensitive skin.

Typology Woman Serums
The third and final step of my prescribed AM routine was to use a serum from Typology's Periodic Woman Serums* (4 x 15ml, £44.90) - a clever pack of four serums which have been designed to be used during different weeks of your menstrual cycle like so:-
  • Week 1: Hydrating and Soothing Serum
  • Main active ingredients: hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, bisabolol and cornflower floral water. 89% naturally-derived.

  • Week 2: Suppleness and Radiance Serum
  • Main active ingredients: vitamin C and fruit acids (blueberry, lemon and orange). 88% naturally-derived.

  • Week 3: Hydrating and Astringent Serum
  • Main active ingredients: sugar extracted from wheat and ginger extract. 91% naturally-derived.

  • Week 4: Mattifying and Anti-Blemish Serum
  • Main active ingredients: seaweed extract and zinc. 89% naturally-derived.

I've been particularly interested in these serums as my skin definitely goes through noticeable changes during my cycle, so it makes a lot of sense to use a specific product to address these differences. I tried them out for a full month and found that they did work incredibly well - especially during weeks 3 & 4 when my skin tends to start having a tantrum and breaking out. Each serum absorbs quickly and produced the results from what they say on the label - perfect! I would highly recommend these to all menstruating women and it's certainly made me consider how I should change up my skincare routine throughout my cycle to better support my complexion. It's worth mentioning that you only need one drop per application so these bottles will last a good while.

Typology Skincare routine review
PM Routine
Moving onto my evening skincare routine, Typology prescribed a micellar water and three different types of serums to address my skin's concerns. I could then finish up with my regular moisturiser.

Typology 7 Ingredient Micellar Water* (200ml, £12.80, link)
I've always liked micellar waters, ever since they became hugely popular, but I've mainly used them to just remove waterproof makeup or as a quick first cleanse before using a cream or balm cleanser. So the thought of only using a micellar water in the evenings was a little strange to me as I'm so used to my double cleanses! That said, this 7 Ingredient Micellar Water worked a charm and removed all traces of daily grime and makeup, and it didn't sting my eyes or dry out my skin. It's fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin.

Typology Hyaluronic Acid 3% + 2% B5 Serum* (15ml, £11.80, link)
On evenings where my skin was craving some extra moisture, I applied the Hyaluronic Acid 3% + 2% B5 Serum, which is suitable for all skin types and has a fresh gel-like texture. I always get on with anything that has Hyaluronic Acid in as it's amazing for locking in moisture for longer and this married well with the B5 in the formula helps the skin to stay perfectly hydrated until the next day.

Typology Bakuchiol 1% Serum* (15ml, £14.80, link)
Ideal for oily skin that's prone to acne and breakouts, the Bakuchiol 1% Serum is a must-have for controlling fussy skin. Rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, Bakuchiol is a popular anti-blemish ingredient and has been regularly used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. It works by targeting the bacteria that gets lodged in the sebum of the pores, helping to prevent the blemish from developing further. It's also useful for repairing skin damage and reducing the appearance of scars. I really love this serum and it's something that I'll definitely continue to use more of in the future.

Typology Salicyclic Acid 2% + Zinc 1% Serum* (15ml, £19.80, link)
Finally, I applied a little of the Salicyclic Acid 2% + Zinc 1% Serum to any blemishes that were already gracing my complexion and I was very pleased to see a huge reduction after just the first use. This serum is fantastic as a localised spot treatment to use as and when blemishes pop up, and it's another product that I highly recommend to have in your skincare stash if you have oily/combination skin.

Extras
The more I looked into Typology, the more I discovered and realised how vast their product range is, and I was thrilled to find these extras in my skincare package. There were two Perfume Discovery Sets* (£8.80 each, link) with some gorgeous fresh floral and citrusy scents (the Pamplemousse Petit Grain and Yuzu are new faves), and their popular 9 Ingredient Lip Balm* (15ml, £9.80, link) which is packed full of nourishing plant-based actives with nothing unnecessary or artificial added.

Overall Thoughts
Typology is obviously a brand for ardent skincare lovers and savvy consumers who want natural and effective products. But it's also a brand that can be embraced by those new to skincare as their informative website is full of advice about how to build a routine that suits your skin type and the online shop makes it easy to find products to address your skin concerns. It reminds me of a more streamlined and simplified luxury version of The Ordinary, but with better ingredients, more ethics and none of the drama.
