Worth The Hype: Laruce Luxury Makeup Brushes - Flat Foundation, Angle Contour & Highlighter Brushes review

 

A favourite amongst many American beauty bloggers, Laruce has been making some noise online since they came onto the beauty scene in 2019. But are they worth the hype? 

Pre-Covid times, I was always a massive makeup fan and have been ever since I was a teenager. My arsenal of makeup brushes and tools has grown so much over the years, and I've tried out all of the big-name brands, alongside the niche and indie companies that produce them. You might think that a blusher brush, for example, is pretty much a standard shape so they'd all be the same, right? Wrong. 

Makeup brushes vary a lot! And sometimes, you get what you pay for. Case in point; Laruce.

I recently won a set of Laruce makeup brushes in a Twitter giveaway, and I was absolutely thrilled after seeing so many American beauty bloggers use them in makeup tutorials.  Laruce is completely vegan-friendly and cruelty-free, and the brand as a whole prides itself on being inclusive and actively encourages individualism, unity, compassion and empathy online.

I received three of their brushes to try out; the LR335 Flat Foundation Brush, LR334 Angle Contour Brush and LR308 Highlighter Brush. The bad news is that Laruce isn't readily available in the UK yet, but *spoiler alert*, it wouldn't surprise me if they announced a UK stockist pretty soon! To give you a rough idea of the prices, they start at around $26 for a small individual lip brush to $350 for a complete set.

These brushes all have a chunky black plastic handle with a moulded grip which makes them super easy to hold and work with. I think this fits in perfectly with their inclusivity ethos as I imagine that many disabled beauty fans may find these brushes easier to hold. 

The bristles are synthetic as they are cruelty-free, and they are crazy soft! I would rate these in my top 3 brands for the softest brushes ever, they're that good. Pure luxury!

Let's have a quick rundown of each individual brush, starting with the LR335 Flat Foundation Brush. With its dense but flexible, flat-top kabuki-style head, this brush worked incredibly well with both liquid and powder/mineral foundation formats. It blends and buffs everything into the skin so smoothly and effortlessly for a gorgeous flawless finish. I cannot fault this brush at all - I love it!

The LR334 Angle Contour Brush has a great sloping angled head with the same style of densely packed but flexible bristles as the foundation brush. The shape of this brush is ideal for beauty beginners as it makes applying blushers and bronzers virtually impossible to get wrong as it does most of the work for you; even if you apply with a heavy hand, the bristles just seem to fan everything out for an instantly softer, more diffused look. I've tried it with liquid and powder/mineral products with superb results.

Perhaps surprisingly, my favourite of the three is the LR308 Highlighter Brush. I just love the slightly longer, oval-shaped brush head and the bristles are just so silky soft. This brush is the best for those little finishing touches like a gentle sweep of highlighter across the tops of the cheekbones, or as a setting brush for undereye concealer. Save this one to use with your favourite powder products.

Overall thoughts?

I'm thoroughly impressed by these Laruce brushes and would certainly recommend them to any makeup brush fan. If you're looking for a cruelty-free, high-end, luxury alternative to brushes from brands such as MAC, these are even better quality, and much softer and easier to work with. They also wash up well with no shedding issues so far after two months of regular use.

New In Beauty: Tropic Beauty Boost Sheer Foundation, Mineral Foundation, Kiss Me Quick Lipsticks & Lip Glazes - Review & Swatches

Tropic are killing it with the new beauty releases this year, and their latest makeup products for base and lips have been in daily rotation on my vanity since they arrived! Let's take a closer look at what's new.

Hot on the heels of their customisable Colour Palette (read my review of that here), Tropic has brought out a whole new range of base and lip products for you to fall in love with. From lighter foundation options for the Summer to delectable nourishing lipsticks and lip glazes, there's something for every makeup junkie to get excited about! And as always, everything from Tropic is certified cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.

Here's what I've been loving lately:-

Tropic Beauty Booster Sheer Foundation* (30ml, £22, link)

If you hate the feeling of thick liquid foundations on your skin, this Beauty Booster Sheer Foundation is a brilliant alternative that you'll instantly love the moment that you try it. Not to be confused with a tinted moisturiser, Beauty Booster offers a light-medium level of coverage in a weightless-feeling liquid base. The pigment here is combined with a serum formula that contains SPF35 and it gives the skin a gorgeous dewy finish that looks particularly fresh, brightening and youthful so it's great for perking up dull or tired complexions.

I've been applying it with a damp beauty blender sponge and I love how easy it is to achieve a really natural, healthy-looking finish - very much like 'my skin, but better'! Available in six shades, I have Warm Beige which is perfectly suited to my light olive skin tone.

Tropic Mineral Foundation* (6g, £24, link)

For those who prefer mineral powder foundations, Tropic's bestselling Mineral Foundation has been re-packaged for their new collection. Like the Beauty Booster above, it comes in six shades and Warm Beige was another perfect match for me, without any hint of orange. Instead, it gives me a lovely natural finish on the skin which I'd say is the equivalent of light-medium coverage - a quick sweep over the face will blur any small imperfections, whilst another buildable layer delivers a more even coverage. SPF25 is included in the silky-soft formula and I really like how well this wears throughout the day, without any dry patches forming around my nose or mouth like some other mineral foundations have a habit of doing. Another bonus is that refills are available to cut down on plastic waste.

A word on the packaging though - whilst I like the compact pot with its inbuilt mesh to stop the powder going everywhere, it is a little tricky to get it out onto your brush. You have to push down in the centre to bring the powder up and be quite firm with pressing it into your brush, so a small kabuki is your best tool to apply it.

Tropic Eco Artist Kabuki Brush* (£22, link)

Need a new kabuki brush in your life? I have been seriously impressed with all of Tropic's Eco Artist Brushes so far that I've tried out, and their Kabuki Brush is no exception. This brush is short and compact so that it fits in perfectly with the Mineral Foundation pot above and the smaller size makes it ideal for travelling with as it doesn't take up much room in my makeup bag. A fluffy and dense head of vegan-friendly synthetic fibres allows you to bluff and blend foundation into the skin effortlessly, whilst the sturdy wood base fits nicely into your hand.

Tropic Kiss Me Quick Lipsticks in Go Go Goji, Plum Pout and Fresh Fig* (5g, £20 each, link)

There is something rather alluring and addictive about opening up a fresh new lipstick and these Kiss Me Quick Lipsticks have had me well and truly smitten since they arrived. The white and gold packaging is not only stylish, but they have been specially made to accommodate Tropic's new refillable lipstick cartridges which makes it easy to switch up different colours and to replace your favourite shade when it runs out.

Formulated with a seriously hydrating blend of plant based ingredients such as Candelilla Wax, Olive Squalene, Babassu Oil, Shea Butter, Mango Seed Oil and Jojoba Oil to name but a few, these lipsticks are ultra-nourishing and plumping with a glossy finish. Due to this, they aren't as long-lasting as I'd hoped for, but with a lipstick this beautiful, I don't mind whipping it out of my bag to show it off as I reapply!

An easy way to wear a subtly brighter shade in the Summer months and perfect for holidays, Go Go Goji is a lush pop of coral pink that's incredibly flattering on a range of different skin tones.

Tropic Kiss Me Quick Lipstick in Plum Pout

Aptly named, Plum Pout is a juicy plum-pink that looks equally amazing on pale, tanned and darker skin tones. I love wearing this one for dinner evenings and nights out.

Tropic Kiss Me Quick Lipstick in Fresh Fig

Oh, Fresh Fig! My new favourite everyday lippie, this is the perfect 'my lips but better shade' as it's just a touch darker than my natural lip colour. I think this is going to live permanently in my handbag from now on!

Tropic Lip Glazes in Sugar Plum and Candy Pop* (5ml, £14 each, link)

For an even glossier pout, Tropic's Lip Glazes will be calling your name this Summer and they smell good enough to eat with a sweet and fruity scent. Available in three shades, these Lip Glazes are super moisturising with a beautiful shine finish and have much more pigment to them than I was expecting. There's no stickiness and they glide on easily. Use them on their own or apply over lipstick for some megawatt shine!

Tropic Lip Glaze in Candy Pop

Candy Pop is like a classic bubblegum pink and candy floss pink, all swirled together! As you can see, this is a really juicy and glossy wash of pink.

Tropic Lip Glaze in Sugar Plum

Although it looks darker in the tube, Sugar Plum translates to a much sheerer colour when applied to the lips and has a subtle shimmer that I love. A great shade to wear all year round.

New In Beauty: Creating My Perfect Colour Palette with Tropic

Hands up if you love the convenience of makeup palettes, but find that there's always at least one or two shades that you just never reach for? Say farewell to those unloved pans of product and build your own perfect makeup palette with the latest launch from Tropic.

There's no point denying it; there's a massive amount of waste in the beauty industry and as consumers, much of the problem lies directly with us and the frightening number of products that we throw away unused every year. Not only is this terrible for our bank balances, but it's not good for the Environment either, with many of our plastic toiletries and makeup bottles ending up in the oceans or adding to the landfill problem if they're not properly recycled. 

Customisable makeup palettes are nothing new, many brands have been offering them for years, but I think what has changed is the consumer mindset towards products that are more eco-friendly, sustainable, vegan and cruelty-free. For these reasons, there couldn't be a better time to streamline your makeup collection, and this is why Tropic's new Colour Palette has attracted so much attention recently.

With 50 product options and a mind-boggling 734 million combinations, Tropic has launched a refillable makeup system that allows you to create your bespoke dream palette - the one that you'll use every day and take everywhere with you. When you've used up a certain shade, you can simply recycle the aluminium pan and purchase a refill, or try a completely new product in its place. Where To Start?

First, pick your Tropic Colour Palette* (£16 or free if you purchase your makeup products at the same time). There are four different configurations of the palettes available, so have a good think about the products that you'll use the most often. I chose Combination C which features two small trays, two medium trays and one large tray, and this is perfect for me.

The palette itself is smaller than most smartphones these days (for reference, it's slightly smaller than an iPhone 7 and about the same width) which makes it compact for travelling, but still large enough to use on a daily basis. It's made from smooth white plastic with recyclable aluminium trays and a large mirror in the reverse of the lid. I think it's very chic!

Building My Perfect Colour Palette

Now comes the fun part! Once you've decided which combination of palette to go for, you can then choose all of the products to fill it with. For the small pans, there are two types of brow products (a pomade and a powder), and two eye products (pressed shadows and wax liners). The medium pan has a wider choice with a mix of creams and powders (concealers, blushers, bronzers, contours and highlighters), and finally, the large pan can hold cream blush or concealer, powder blush or bronzer, or a setting powder.

For my palette, I chose the following:-

[Small pan] Brow Boss Defining Powder in Carob* (1.5g, £8): Available in three shades, this pigmented powder makes it easy to define your brows and contains Coconut Oil to condition them. Also doubles up as an eyeliner and eyeshadow.

[Small pan] Eyes On You Pressed Shadow in Pebble* (1.5g, £8): With thirteen shade of eyeshadow to choose from, I ended up picking Pebble which is a beautiful light shimmery taupe with brown and purple undertones. 

[Medium pan] Way To Glow Pressed Highlighter in Rose Gold* (3g, £16): I knew that I wanted a blush shade in the palette, but when I saw Rose Gold from the Pressed Highlighters range, I decided to opt for the best of both worlds as this colour can be used to create such a pretty pinky, shimmery glow to the cheeks. I love it!

[Medium pan] Jet Set Pressed Bronzer in Bali Bronze* (3g, £16): No palette could be complete for me without a bronzer and there are three shades that Tropic offers. I picked Bali Bronze which looks like the lightest colour and it delivers a stunning sunkissed finish.

[Large pan] Make It Matte Setting Powder* (5g, £20): As I have a notoriously oily T-Zone, a matte setting powder was a must and I've been enjoying using this translucent finely milled pressed powder to keep my makeup looking its best for longer.

My Perfect Tropic Colour Palette

I'm absolutely smitten with my Tropic Colour Palette and love everything about it, from the high-performance results and colour payoff of the products themselves, to the beautiful design of the palette and how easy it fits into my handbag, it's just perfect! The magnetic pans make it super easy to mix and match products so that you can swap them in and out as often as you please. It's incredibly versatile and I know that I'll be still using this palette for many years to come!

Dual-ended makeup brushes are fantastic for travelling with and they make the ideal accompaniments to a palette like this. The Eco Artist Precision Face Brush features a pointed head which can be used to apply contour and highlighter, and a rounded, domed head to blend foundation and base products. Both ends are made from silky soft, synthetic fibres that are cruelty-free and vegan-friendly, and they can be used with any kind of cream, liquid and powder makeup.

Tropic Eco Artist 3-in-1 Eye Brush* (£16)

Staying with the overall theme of streamlining and travelling, Tropic also has a clever 3-in-1 Eye Brush up its sleeve! Made from the same soft synthetic fibres as the Precision Face Brush above, this multi-use brush boasts an angled end for applying eyeliner, a small and fluffy head for blending eyeshadow which you can them slip off to reveal a hidden inner spoolie for tidying up your brows. How neat is that?!

Introducing: SARYA Couture Makeup - Review & Swatches

Heads up fellow makeup junkies - Italy's luxury organic makeup brand SARYA is here and they have some gorgeous products to feast your eyes upon!

SARYA is a relatively new brand to the organic cosmetics market, having spent two years in development, they only officially launched in Summer last year. Their ethos is based around developing makeup that uses natural and organic ingredients that don't compromise on performance or results, and with sophisticated, sleek packaging to boot, you can see why there's been some buzz about them online. They are also proud to be certified organic (by Cosmetici Biologici) and cruelty-free (by PETA).

That said, I hadn't heard of SARYA until a package arrived via LoveLula (one of the brand's UK stockists) a couple of weeks ago. At present, their makeup range is fairly limited as they only sell a few lipsticks, eyeshadows and makeup brushes, but I was still excited nonetheless as the packaging is so beautiful. Inside, I discovered a cute faux-leather, branded makeup bag, a single eyeshadow compact, an eyeshadow brush and a lipstick, so it was time to have a play!

 SARYA Couture Makeup Eyeshadow in Mocha* (3.5g, £17.80, link)  and 201 All Over Shader Brush* (£11.60, link)

Single eyeshadow compacts seem to be coming back into vogue these days, as beauty consumers are streamlining and decluttering their makeup collections, and SARYA has four different shades to choose from which will definitely spark some joy in your makeup bag! These eyeshadows are made from an organic formula that features a blend of Apricot Oil, Avocado Oil and Shea Butter, and is free of parabens, mineral oils, fragrance and phthalates, which results in a silky smooth feel and makes them easy to blend.

As I mentioned earlier, the packaging is really sleek and opening it up, I was met with the most beautiful chocolate brown shade called Mocha. This is one of those versatile shades that works well all over the lid and as a crease/transition colour to add depth and smokiness. Richly pigmented, I've been reaching for this shade a lot recently as it's just so easy to wear, especially when applied with the 201 All Over Shader Brush. Featuring silky soft, synthetic Taklon bristles, this vegan-friendly brush is a great addition to your collection and the wider cut of the head lends itself perfectly to sweeping shadow all over the lid for a fuss-free finish.

SARYA Couture Makeup Lipstick in Lovecraft* (4g, £19.50, link) and Makeup Bag* (£13.30, link)

I'm like a magpie when it comes to luxury red lipsticks and SARYA's Lovecraft is an absolute stunner. Created from a 75% natural formula that has ultra-nourishing ingredients such as Coconut Oil, Beet Oil, Castor Oil and Palm Butter, and is free from the likes of petroleum, parabens, artificial colouring and fragrance, this lipstick glides on effortlessly and has some killer pigmentation - the swatch below was just one swipe!

Lovecraft is a warm red that's incredibly flattering to wear for a range of skin tones as it makes your teeth look whiter, and instantly brightens up your whole complexion. It has a semi-matte finish, feels very moisturising and lasted a good few hours before I needed to reapply (that was without eating/drinking though). As it's so pigmented, I'd recommend applying it with a lip brush for a perfect pout, and a lipliner would also come in handy to prevent any feathering later on in the day.

Lastly, I have to mention that awesome branded Makeup Bag! Made from bright red synthetic leather, I've had so many compliments about it and it's currently in my travel bag ready for any impromptu weekends away.

New In Beauty: Nanshy Brushes review

There's something about receiving a brand new set of makeup brushes that makes my heart skip a beat, as I'm sure it does the same for many beauty junkies out there. Getting to open pristine, perfectly clean and untouched brushes for the very first time is almost as exciting as unwrapping a brand new lipstick or palette, so I was thrilled when this amazing package from Nanshy dropped through my letterbox earlier this month.

Longtime readers of mine might remember that I first reviewed a set of Nanshy brushes a few years ago (and you can read that original review here), and I still use many of the brushes from that set to this day, though I must admit that some have held up better than others. With this in mind, I was excited to hear that the brand has recently decided to reformulate and redesign the look and feel of their brushes, and I was kindly sent one of their new sets to have a play with.

The new Nanshy brushes have improved in several ways for a much sleeker and more contemporary update overall. Firstly, the ergonomic handles feel slightly smaller than before and more manageable to hold. The larger base and face brushes still feel chunkier than most other makeup brushes that I own, but they feel nicer to grip. The brushes now feature clearly labelled, modern text on the handles so that you can easily see which brush is which (perfect for beauty beginners and busy makeup artists alike), and the metallic copper ferrules have a tighter and more robust design to them, which gives the brushes a more luxurious and stylised finish.

However, it's the bristles that have changed the most, and definitely for the better. They're still cruelty-free (PETA approved) and antibacterial, but they now feel a million times softer and are a sheer delight to work with. I've put all of these brushes to the test over the past couple of weeks so that I can share my thoughts about each one with you today.

 Nanshy Angled Contouring Brush* 

If you love the contouring trend, then an Angled Contouring Brush is a must-have in your collection. I always find that angled brushes work amazingly well for things like bronzers and blushers as you can apply the product exactly where you want it to go and blend it out beautifully at the same time, so there are no streaks or hard edges/awkward telltale lines anywhere. The shape of the head allows the brush to fit perfectly around and under the hollows of the cheeks to create depth and shadow in a matter of seconds. I especially love using this one with powders, but it works well with cream and liquid blushers and bronzers too.

 Nanshy Stippling Brush* 

I never used to bother with Stippling Brushes until I saw a Charlotte Tilbury makeup artist apply a foundation on my friend a few years ago, and I instantly fell in love with the flawless results! Nanshy's Stippling Brush has a flat head that features two different lengths of duo-fibre bristles which lets you tap and effortlessly 'stipple' any kind of liquid base into the skin. I still prefer using a sponge for full coverage foundations, but I'll often use a Stippling Brush like this when I want a lighter and fresher looking coverage - it's great with BB creams, tinted moisturisers and light-medium coverage foundations. 

 Nanshy Conceal Perfector* 

This pointy-headed Conceal Perfector looks a little strange at first, but it's ideal for getting in those tricky little nooks and crannies like around the nose, to ensure that you're not left with a patchy base. I suffer from some redness around my nose, especially during the colder months, so it's nice to have a brush like this that will completely cover everything up. The tip of the head is surprisingly more precise than it looks, so it's good for blending in concealer for larger areas if you have acne or pigmentation.  I've also been using this one underneath my eyes with a bit of translucent powder to bake or set my concealer as it's so soft to use.

Nanshy Concealer Brush*

Another brush that seems a bit strange looking is their Concealer Brush. Most concealer brushes that I own look like lip brushes, but this one has a uniquely sculpted flat edge so that you can achieve very precise results with your concealer underneath the eyes (it's great for creating those big triangle shapes that you see on Instagram) and around your nose. I actually prefer using this brush for contouring my nose though, as the straight angle allows you to draw thin lines down the nose easily and then gently blend them out for a seamless finish. Great with both powder and liquid/cream formulas.

 Nanshy Eye Crease Brush*

This little Eye Crease Brush is perhaps my favourite of the set as it makes doing a smokey eye so easy and effortless. The shape is just right for getting into the crease to add some depth and shadow, without going overboard and looking like a smudgy mess (which can easily happen with brushes that have a larger head!). The bristles are lovely and soft so they don't irritate the delicate eye area, and it works a charm with any pressed and loose powder eyeshadows.

 Nanshy Large Shader Brush*

The Large Shader Brush is a classic short square-headed eyeshadow brush that has slightly rounded edges for a softer finish. It's perfect for packing on a base colour, especially if you're using loose eyeshadow, and the rounded edges lend themselves well to be used underneath the eyes if you want to use your shadow as a liner for a smokey/grungey look.

Nanshy Liner Brush*

Finally, the last brush that I tried was the Liner Brush, and this is another excellent staple to have in your brush collection if you're a winged eyeliner fan or simply enjoying using liquid eyeliner straight from a pot. This brush is very precise and has a super thin and tapered end so that you can get a really skinny line or flick. It's flexible enough to use at any angle, but also dense enough to be able to keep the shape of the line on track. 

Overall thoughts?

I'm very impressed with these new Nanshy brushes as they're a clear improvement on the older ones and will definitely help to catapult Nanshy into more hands of makeup junkies around the world. New In Beauty: Limited Edition INIKA Flawless and Perfecting Makeup Brushes review

Organic Aussie brand INIKA, recently launched some very exciting new luxury makeup brushes to compliment their fantastic range of base products.

The two new INIKA brushes are very on-trend and I'm sure anyone who loves playing with makeup will adore these! They've been specially designed to flawlessly apply a range of base makeup including powders, liquids and creams, so whatever foundation format you prefer to use, there's a brush that'll work effortlessly for you. 

The attention to detail and design of these brushes is also remarkable, with a quality that easily rivals most mainstream, higher-end luxury brands that I've tried. The handles are made from a black, slightly rubberised material which makes them easy to grip and comfortable to hold, whilst the cruelty-free, vegan-friendly synthetic bristles are incredibly soft and feel so luxurious on the skin.

Let's take a closer look at these beauties!

INIKA Limited Edition Perfection Powder Brush* (£27.50, link)

The first thing that struck me about this Powder Brush is that it kinda resembles something between an old-fashioned men's shaving brush and a kabuki. It's very densely packed and each individual brush fibre has been tapered to give a super smooth buffing effect. When I first used it, I thought it would be simply too big, but was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to use with both loose and pressed mineral powder foundations. The brush head has a slight angle to it, which means it picks up product and buffs it across larger surfaces of the face for a beautiful, even and flawless looking finish. 

I've also used this to apply bronzer down my neck, chest and across my shoulders with excellent results, and you could do the same with any highlighter/shimmers when you want to cover larger areas evenly and quickly. The brush comes with its own portable sliding case which is brilliant for travelling, as well as looking great on your vanity table.

INIKA Limited Edition Flawless Liquid Foundation Brush* (£23.50, link)

If you're more of a liquid/cream foundation user instead, the new Flawless Liquid Foundation Brush will help you get a smooth and selfie-ready face in a matter of minutes. There are a couple of brands that do brushes like this which feature a hollowed out centre, and they can very useful if you have areas that need extra product and coverage. Like the Powder Brush, this one also has densely packed, super soft bristles which have been individually tapered to avoid any streaking problems, yet it's flexible enough to get in and around tricky areas like the nose easily.

I love the handle on this brush as it fits nicely in my hand and helps to move the brush where it needs to be, without it ever feeling awkward or clunky. I've tried out this brush with a number of different foundations and feel that it's definitely better suited to medium and full coverage formulas as it just works the product into the skin so well and stops heavier foundations from looking cakey. You can use it with BBs and lighter coverage liquid/cream bases too, but it does soak up more product so bear this in mind as you may need to use more than you'd expect with thinner liquid formulas. The finish that this brush gives is beautiful though, and an ideal way to achieve that coveted 'your skin but better' look.

Overall thoughts?

Both of these brushes have performed really well for me, so I'd say they're worthy investments if you're looking for some new cruelty-free foundation brushes to add to your brush collection (or they're great starting ones if you currently don't have anything!). They would also be perfect for professional makeup artists as I found them very easy to clean and they're far more hygienic and environmentally friendly than using sponges.
