Tried & Tested: JASON Brightening Apricot Scrubble (+ comparison with St Ives)

JĀSÖN Brightening Apricot Scrubble (128ml, £5.29, link)*

I'm a huge fan of JĀSÖN's products (previous reviews here), and I have been trying out their much hyped Apricot Scrubble for the last few weeks.  I can certainly see why so many bloggers have been adding this scrub to their skincare routines, it's amazing!

JĀSÖN's Brightening Apricot Scrubble is a soap-free foaming facial wash combined with an exfoliator, a 'happy hybrid' as I like to call it.  The formula is free from parabens, sodium lauryl / laureth sulfates and phthalates, and features natural ingredients such as apricot oil and walnut powder.  Like everything else in the JĀSÖN range, it's cruelty free and BUAV approved.

I was a little apprehensive at first about using a foaming formula because I find that most are very drying and strip away too much of your skin's natural oils, but I needn't have worried because this one is SLS free, so it simply doesn't do that.

Apricot Scrubble works beautifully as a proper exfoliator.  By 'proper', I mean one where you can really feel it getting deep down into your pores and giving you a good old scrubbing!  After just one use, my skin felt really clean and looked much clearer, especially around my nose and general t-zone area where I suffer from blemishes the most.

I perhaps wouldn't recommend this for those who have very sensitive skin, as it is quite a hardcore scrub, so it's one that I will be using just once or twice a week.  Over the few weeks that I have been using it, I've been reaching for this a lot more often than my usual Purity Facial Exfoliator which I have loved for months!

I couldn't review an apricot scrub and not compare it to the well known and much loved St Ives one, so here's a quick comparison for those who are curious:-

Consistency & formula: JĀSÖN has a thick, gel like formula with much bigger exfoliating bits.  St Ives is a traditional thick cream formula with smaller exfoliating pieces.  JĀSÖN lathers up, whilst St Ives doesn't really.

Scent: Both smell pretty similar apricot wise, but I would say that when you use them, the JĀSÖN one comes across slightly stronger and less artificial.

Ingredients:

JĀSÖN - Aqua (Water), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Cetyl Alcohol, Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder, Glycerin, Stearic Acid, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract*, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract*, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Allantoin, Steareth-20, Xanthan Gum, Alcohol*, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Fragrance (Parfum) *Certified Organic Ingredient.

St Ives - Aqua (Water), Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder, Glyceryl Stearate, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Zea Mays (Corn) Kernel Meal, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-100 Stearate, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Fruit Extract, Cetyl Aetate, Polysorbate 60, Ceteareth-20, Acetylated Lanolin Alcohol, Carbomer, Phenethyl Alcohol, PPG-2 Methyl Ether, Glycerin, Triethanolamine, Methylisothiazolinone, Parfum (Fragrance), Limonene, Linalool, C1 77891.

So ingredients wise, JĀSÖN fares much better naturally and has some organic ingredients too.  St Ives has a lot more preservatives and features Sodium Laureth Sulfate which JĀSÖN is formulated without.  Both contain a small amount of Parfum.

Price & availability: JĀSÖN retails at £5.29 for 128ml and St Ives retails at £3.99 for 150ml.  St Ives is widely available in Boots, chemists and supermarkets etc.  JĀSÖN is available from some health food stores and numerous places online such as Feel Unique, Naturismo etc, and direct from their own website.

Perfomance: Personally I prefer JĀSÖN's Apricot Scrubble because I find it's a much more effective exfoliator than the St Ives one.  I also sometimes find the St Ives one can be a little drying for my skin because of the SLS content, whereas I had no issues with JĀSÖN's Scrubble.

Have you tried either of these? Do you prefer a more fierce scrub or a gentler one?

  1. I have always wondered about this scrub but now after reading your review I think it may not be suitable for my sensitive skin. Nice comparison to St Ives.

    1. Yeah I think it might be just too harsh for sensitive skin, but I guess it depends if you're used to harder scrubs or more gentle ones :)

  2. I tried St.Ives as my mum had it and I was allergic to it and my face was covered in little lumps. I'm not sure what ingredient set me off but I hope they do a more sensitive version as I really liked the result! (before the rash), I wonder if the JĀSÖN would have the same effect?

    1. Yikes! It could well have been one of the extra preservatives in the St Ives scrub that set off your allergic reaction or perhaps a reaction to the Acetylated Lanolin Alcohol in it which seems fairly common? As you can see in the ingredients comparison, the St Ives one has a LOT more preservatives and other potential allergens in it than the JĀSÖN scrubble. Would recommend doing a little skin patch test either way x
