Review: PMD Personal Microderm - At Home Microdermabrasion

PMD Personal Microderm
For the past month I've been testing out this nifty skincare gadget from PMD which allows you to do microdermabrasion at home.  Here's how I got on!

Despite being a beauty blogger, I rarely have professional beauty 'things' done to me, except getting my hair cut or going to a spa for a special one-off occasion.  There's one main reason for this; money. Being a student usually means that money is tight and I'm no exception.  I would love to have regular facials and back massages etc, but sadly at this point in my life, those things aren't going to be a common reality.  So with this in mind, I am always intrigued by anything that can give you pro-results at home, but in a much more affordable manner.

My skin has improved considerably over the past couple of years, thanks partly to understanding what skincare products work well with it and adjustments that I've made to my diet.  But like a lot of women, I still suffer from blemishes and breakouts around that time of the month, and my skin has always been a little bit on the sensitive side.  I've read a lot about the benefits that regular Microdermabrasion sessions can have on the skin, especially if you're prone to acne and blemishes, as it's an effective way to exfoliate and brighten the complexion.

What It Is
This electrical gadget that I've been testing out is called a PMD - Personal Microderm, which features a little spinning exfoliating 'head' that is embedded with the same kind of aluminium oxide crystals that dermatologists use when they're doing microdermabrasion.  You can use it to unclog pores, even out uneven skintone and pigmentation, reduce blemishes and help smooth out the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

It comes with three different types of exfoliating discs - a White one to start off with known as a training disc because it's very gentle, four Blue ones which is the next level up and two Green ones which are the highest level.  The PMD is very easy to use - choose which exfoliating head you want to use and slot it in, plug into the mains and you're ready to go.

How To Use
Just switch it on (there's one on/off switch) and hold over the area of your face that you want to exfoliate, slowly moving it across to the next area and so on.  You'll feel a lot of suction which is strange at first but I was mostly worried about it being too abrasive.  The first couple of times that I used it, I did have a lot of redness afterwards and my face felt almost bruised, but this soon reduced once my skin got used to what was going on.  I would strongly recommend watching the How To DVD that's included in the box before using this and to definitely start with the White training disc as recommended which is what I did.

Results
After using this 1-2 times a week for about a month now, I have noticed that my skin is much smoother to the touch and some marks that were left behind from a few big blemishes months ago have nearly gone away which is amazing.  It has taken a month to see these results though so be patient with it and bear in mind, that if your skin is sensitive, you'll want to take it slowly.  That said, I'm happy with the results so far and hope it continues!

  1. The results sound amazing!
I am suffering from a terrible breakout that is leaving my skin peppered with really dark scars. I've considered booking myself in for some kind of professional treatment to help fade the scars but gosh they're SO expensive! This would definitely be something I would look into to help :)

  5. I've had microdermabrasion done professionally in the past. For a while I was going to the salon once a month to have it done. My skin is also prone to breakouts and microdermabrasion definitely helped. I loved how smooth my skin was after the procedure! It was of course really red which is normal I guess when you have this done, but the redness slowly disappears so that's not a problem. Microdermabrasion is also great for wrinkle prevention. This is interesting product. I wonder how many times can you use it before it's not that effective?

    1. I believe you can purchase extra exfoliating discs separately so it will last as long as you want it to! :)

  6. I've had my PMD for YEARS and I still absolutely love it! I purchased one for my mom and one for my sister-in-law. They both love it just as much, too.

  8. It sounds interesting! Although it also sounds like it would be far too abrasive for my sensitive skin x

    1. It may be, I'd recommend only using it once a fortnight to start with if you wanted to try it to see how your skin reacted to it x
