Udo's Choice Digestive Enzymes & Super 8 supplements review
Maintaining a healthy gut is one of the best ways to stay healthy, but it's not always easy to stay on top of everything when you have a busy lifestyle, and your diet is often one of the key areas that suffers as a result. Luckily, help is on hand from Udo's Choice and I've been trying out their popular Digestive Enzymes and Super 8 supplements for the past month.

The benefits of having a healthy gut and looking after your digestive system have become much more apparent in the West during recent years, although places like India have had a focus on its importance for a long time (Ayurveda is one such example), and many other Eastern cultures have an emphasis on gut health in their traditional medicine approaches.

The importance of a Healthy Gut
But why is a healthy gut important? In a simplified nutshell, the gut is where billions of friendly bacteria and microbes live, and they help to keep your digestive system working as it should be. They also help with things like obesity and weight management and have links to supporting your immune system as well, plus there's a lot of research being carried out to assess the gut's impact on many other bodily functions. The gut may even play a role in problems like depression and poor mental health, as it's often referred to as the 'second brain', with research suggesting that gut bacteria likely influences our behaviour and moods. It's a fascinating subject!

What Can I Do to Keep My Gut Healthy?
Eating the right food is the best way to keep your gut happy and healthy, and feeding the 'good bacteria' in your gut is one of the easiest and most effective methods, as it will help them to thrive and multiply, so you can maintain a healthy level of them at all times. In your daily diet, try to include a range of wholefoods and plant-based foods and vary these up throughout the week - there are lots of different types of microbes in your gut and like people, they like to eat different foods! Make sure there's lots of fibre, good fats like olive oil, and probiotics like yoghurts and fermented foods too. Although they can be tasty, try to reduce your intake of highly processed foods as they usually have ingredients that 'upset' the balance of the good bacteria and increase the levels of 'bad bacteria', which can cause digestion problems.

Can Supplements Help?
Whilst supplements can never be a substitute for a healthy and varied diet alongside an active lifestyle, they can be beneficial to those who need an extra helping hand. I take a range of supplements from various brands for different things, and I believe they can definitely help to make you feel your best during those times when everything's a bit too busy and stressful. I've been curious to try more from Udo's Choice as I've been taking their Ultimate Oil Blend on and off for years (read my previous review here), so I decided to try out two of their popular healthy gut targeted supplements over the past month; the Digestive Enzymes and Super 8.

Udo's Choice Digestive Enzymes & Super 8 supplements review
Udo's Choice Digestive Enzymes* (60 capsules, £21.99, link)
Utilising a blend of 7 plant-based enzymes, these Digestive Enzymes come in vegetarian-friendly capsules and are gluten and dairy-free. They help to assist in the breakdown of fats, carbohydrates, soluble fibre, starch, milk sugar and complex sugars, which leads to better digestion and allows for the body to absorb the optimal amount of nutrients that it can from the food that you eat. Enzymes are essential for the body to function properly, yet are easily depleted when we're stressed, ill, pregnant or consuming too much alcohol and caffeine. Our bodies also naturally produce fewer enzymes as we get older, so these supplements are a really good way to keep your stash of enzymes topped up.

Each Digestive Enzymes capsule contains:-

  • Alpha-amylase 5000 DU (62.5mg)
  • Alpha-galactosidase 260 GalU (29.9mg)
  • Cellulase 400 CU (11.5mg)
  • Stem bromelain 50000 PU (1.7mg)
  • Lactase 3000 ALU (37.5mg)
  • Protease 12500 HUT (25mg)
  • Lipase 150 LU (8.6mg)

  • These are very easy to take as you simply take one capsule before a meal and you can take an extra one if you're going to be eating a particularly heavy or fatty meal. I didn't see a change immediately but after a week of daily usage, I began to notice that I was much less bloated after eating and that I felt more satisfied and full afterwards which I thought was a very positive result.

    Udo's Choice Super 8* (30 capsules, £25.99, link)
For those looking for a well-rounded gut support supplement, Udo's Super 8 is definitely worth a try. It's a specialist microbiotics supplement which helps to replenish the gut's stock of 'good' bacteria that I mentioned earlier, as it contains eight different bacteria strains which are found in both the small and large intestines; lacto in the small and bifido in the large, so all bases for your digestive system are covered. It boasts a whopping 31 billion cells at expiry too!

    Each Super 8 capsule contains:-
    • Lactobacillus acidophilus (HA-122) 45%
    • Lactobacillus rhamnosus (HA-111) 25%
    • Lactobacillus rhamnosus (HA-114) 10%
    • Lactobacillus plantarum (HA-119) 7%
    • Bifidobacterium bifidum (HA-132) 6%
    • Lactobacillus casei (HA-108) 3%
    • Bifidobacterium longum (HA-135) 3%
    • Lactobacillus salivarius (HA-118) 1%

These capsules are suitable for vegetarians and like the Digestive Enzymes, it's recommended that you take one before meals, but these need to be stored in the fridge afterwards. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but after a fortnight of regular use, I did feel like my digestive system had improved somewhat and that I felt overall slightly happier in myself. It's strange to experience a difference in mood like that and I'll definitely be continuing to use these in the coming months to see if more benefits occur.

Foodie Friday: Organic Edamame & Mung Bean Fettuccine with Curly Kale & Goat's Cheese (Easy 10 Minute Meal)

Organic Edamame & Mung Bean Fettuccine with Curly Kale & Goat's Cheese (Easy 10 Minute Meal)
I love carbs too much to ever go on a carb-free diet (how do people do it?!), but I have been interested to try out some healthier versions of things like pasta, in an effort to mix up my meals a bit more.

In last month's Degustabox, I received a box of Explore Cuisine Organic Edamame & Mung Bean Fettuccine that I couldn't wait to try. This fettuccine is created from just two ingredients; Organic Edamame beans (Green Soybeans) (80%) and Organic mung beans (20%), which makes it naturally gluten-free, higher in protein and fibre than regular pasta, and suitable for vegetarians and vegans. I've tried some brands of gluten-free pasta before, and to be honest, I hated them - the texture was all wrong and they have a tendency to turn into mush if you cook them for a minute longer than intended. But that's not a problem with this as you can get a really good al-dente texture in just 5 minutes, and even if you cook it a little longer, it doesn't go soggy or mushy - hooray!

For an easy mid-week lunch or dinner that's ready in less than 10 minutes, I decided to throw together some of this fettuccine with a little leftover Pesto, Curly Kale and a generous amount of soft creamy Goat's Cheese, which is similar to a dish that I had in Italy about 5 years ago. If you're vegan, simply swap the Pesto for a free-from vegan-friendly one, and either skip the Goat's Cheese or use a similar dairy-free alternative cheese instead.

Organic Edamame & Mung Bean Fettuccine with Curly Kale & Goat's Cheese (Easy 10 Minute Meal)
    Ingredients:
    (for 1 person)
    • 50g of Explore Cuisine Organic Edamame & Mung Bean Fettuccine
    • Handful of Curly Kale
    • 1 tsp of Pesto
    • Sprinkling of Sesame Seeds (to serve)
    • Soft Goat's Cheese (optional, to serve)

    Method:
    • Bring a saucepan of salted water to the boil. Add the Fettucine, reduce the heat and simmer for 5-7 minutes.
    • Add the Curly Kale in the last 3 minutes, or lightly steam in a separate pan if preferred.
    • Drain and stir in the Pesto, mixing everything together well.
    • Transfer to a bowl, sprinkle over some Sesame Seeds and add some small chunks of soft Goat's Cheese if desired. Enjoy!
    What's your favourite pasta alternative?

    January Favourites
January is finally over - hooray! I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to the brighter days of Spring already. Before then, let's have a quick recap of the beauty faves that I've been loving last month.
    January Favourites
    Lorac Riesling Romance Eyeshadow Palette
I'm painfully late to the Lorac palette party, but I've finally discovered how amazing they are and their Riesling Romance Eyeshadow Palette has been my go-to for eyes over the past few weeks. This palette is just heavenly for anyone who loves their neutrals and it's so easy to blend and work with. Perfect for when you're in a rush in the morning and need to get ready in 5 mins.

Tarte Color Splash Hydrating Lipstick in Set Sail (£20, link)
Another blogger favourite brand that I haven't explored much of until recently is Tarte. Not only am I obssessed with the blue marble-esque packaging of this lipstick, but this shade Set Sail is the ideal pop of nude pink for me as it's a little darker than most of the lip colours that I already own in this neutrals family. I really like how it pulls everything together, no matter what kind of makeup I'm wearing at the time! I also love the moisturising formula which definitely comes in handy if your lips are feeling dry due to the cold weather. The only problem now is that I want more shades of these!

    January Favourites
    B. Gentle Eye Makeup Remover* (100ml, £7.99, link)
I always get excited whenever I see a new product launch from B. (the cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, budget-friendly brand that's exclusive to Superdrug). Their latest newbie to hit the shelves is a superb Gentle Eye Makeup Remover, which really is kind to even the most sensitive eyes and suitable for all skin types to use. It contains Cucumber extract, Niacinamide and Allatoin, so it feels very gentle and makes short work of even waterproof mascara.

Akar Skin Ruby Tint Lip Butter
I discovered this brand via Roccabox recently and have kept this mini Lip Butter in my handbag ever since. Akar Skin are an all-natural, Tibetan inspired beauty brand that has a range of mainly skincare and a couple of cosmetics under its belt. This lip butter is 100% natural, free from petroleum and mineral oil, and contains 100% organic and wild-harvested ingredients. It has a gorgeous bright red tint to it and feels super moisturising - a brilliant new find.

Bondi Sands Everyday Gradual Tanning Foam* (270ml, £12.99, link)
My body hasn't seen a decent amount of sunlight in months, so I've been alternating using a gradual tanner with my body moisturisers to give me a hint of golden colour. Bondi Sands are one of my favourite tanning brands and their Everyday Gradual Tanning Foam is basically a foam version of their Everyday Gradual Tanning Body Milk Moisturiser which I've used numerous times over the years. The foam however is much quicker to apply, but gives me the same subtle wash of colour that I'm craving, without the maintenance issues. I just slap this on after a shower and I'm good to go - plus it smells like coconuts!

What are your current beauty favourites?
