Czech Original Beer Cosmetics: Beer Hair Balm & Lip Balm

Tuesday 14 August 2012

Whenever I go on holiday, I always like to have a mooch around the local drugstores in a quest to find wonderful products that you can't get in the UK.  Before I went to Prague, I asked some #bbloggers what I should be looking out for, and all of them recommended this fun Czech beer brand.

If you've ever been to Prague (or anywhere else in the Czech Republic for that matter), you'll no doubt know (or have heard!) that beer is super cheap over there.  It's around 80p a pint and pretty strong!  For the tourists, the Czechs also run a cosmetics brand which specialises in products which are blended with beer.  I have mentioned about how I sometimes use beer on my hair to make it super shiny and soft (DIY post here), so when I saw this Beer Hair Balm for around £4, I knew I had to pick up a bottle to try.

The Beer Hair Balm is a thick and rich conditioner which you leave on for around 3-5 minutes after shampooing, and then rinse off.  The scent is quite strong at first and its unmistakably a bizarre mix of bitter beer and sweet/perfumed chemicals.  I tried it as instructed the first time and I didn't notice any major results with it.  The second time, I tried it as a hair mask, leaving it on for around 20 minutes and wrapped up in a hair turban before rinsing it out.  It worked really well that way!  With it being essentially a touristy gimmick, I wasn't expecting the moon on a stick, but I was pleasantly surprised!  After all, beer is the second ingredient in the balm, so I'll certainly be using it up as a hair mask.

There were lots of other products in the Beer range such as shampoo, shower gel, bath oil(?!?) etc, but it was the Lip Balm that I decided to pick up after a closer look at the ingredients.  The Lip Balm has shea butter and beeswax in it, as well as grape seed oil, all three of which are well known for their moisturising properties.  It's quite hydrating and although the beer flavour is a little strange to start off with, I find myself oddly liking it.  Strange!

I picked up an extra Beer Lip Balm for my Czech giveaway, and it's the last day to enter today!  A winner will be announced tomorrow, good luck!
