Tried & Tested: MOOM Organic Hair Remover Kit

MOOM Organic Hair Remover Kit with Lavender for Extra Sensitive Skin (£14.99)*

These days there are a multitude of ways that you can pay someone to remove your unwanted hair, but your options are always limited if you don't have much tolerance for pain!  Needless to say, I'm not very adventurous when it comes down to hair removal.  I mostly stick with shaving the majority of the time, and sometimes endure a waxing session at my local beauty salon if I'm going on holiday.

I came across a brand called MOOM via Twitter who specialise in organic sugar based hair removers and they kindly sent me one of their kits to try out.

Based on the age old traditional sugaring methods, MOOM blends together just cane sugar, chamomile tea, lemon juice and lavender oil to create a gentle yet effective way to remove unwanted hair.  All of the ingredients are organic and MOOM promises:-
  • Smooth Skin in 3 easy steps without the pain of waxing'
  • Hair-free for up to 2 months
  • Removes coarse as well as fine hair effectively
  • Gently removes hair from the root
  • No animal testing
  • Hypoallergenic
Unlike other hair removal methods which can cause damage or irritation to the skin, MOOM cares for and treats the skin kindly because the solution doesn't actually attach itself to the skin, it only sticks to the hair that you want to remove.  Also unlike waxing, because the solution is natural and water soluble, if you make a mistake or use too much, you can just wash it off with some water and start again.

Sound good so far?  Let's get stuck in!

The kit contains:-
  • 170g/60z jar of MOOM 100% Organic Nourishing Hair Remover
  • 18 reusable poly cotton strips in two different sizes
  • 4 various size wooden applicators
  • Step by step instructions

The instructions were very easy to follow and basically consist of doing the below steps.  Remember that you'll need about two weeks of hair growth before you do this:-
  1. Wash and dry skin completely to remove any oils, make-up and lotions etc.
  2. Warm the jar of MOOM for 10 seconds at a time in a microwave.  You want to get a honey-like consistency because that makes it much easier to spread and use.
  3. Apply the solution in the direction of the hair growth using one of the wooden spatulas and spread out so that you have a thin, even film of the solution.  Less is definitely more!
  4. Apply a poly cotton strip over the top and rub your hand over the whole length quickly 3 times.  This makes the strip stick to the solution.
  5. Hold skin taut with one hand and zip off the strip quickly in the direction opposite to hair growth.  It must be in the opposite direction otherwise it won't work properly.
  6. Repeat until all the hair is gone!
I found MOOM to be simple to use, though it did take some time getting used to the amount of solution that I need to apply at first.  Because the solution is thick, you need to make the extra effort to really thin it out over the hair before you place a cotton strip over the top otherwise it'll just soak straight through and stop sticking.

Pain-wise, I found it to be a LOT less painful than waxing, but it wasn't completely pain-free of course (you're still ripping hair straight out of its roots, so SOME pain is going to be inevitable!).  With these methods, the more you times you do it, the less painful it becomes.

MOOM left me hair-free for about 4 weeks.  This might be because it was my first time using it, but do remember that everyone's hair grows at different speeds and may grow quicker in the summer months when it's exposed to more sunlight.  I didn't experience any irritation or rashes whilst using it either and I have generally all over sensitive skin.

MOOM Hair Remover Kits have various extra essential oils to suit all skin types.

Have you tried MOOM?

    1. I think getting the right consistency of the product is key to how painful it might be to take off. I've used a sugaring solution by another brand in the past and it was so sticky that it hurt like hell! There is some pain with MOOM but nowhere near as bad as waxing is x

  3. I'm really considering trying this brand, I've checked out the site many a times! I know the body shop used to a version, they now just do the strips. I do love waxing, the pain doesn't bother me anymore, beats being hairy! :D
