Tried & Tested: ghd Total Volume Foam review

Thursday 3 January 2013

ghd Total Volume Foam* (200ml, £14.95, link)

When it comes to the subject of hair straighteners, ghd are usually the first three letters most will say on the matter.  I bought my first pair of ghds almost 7 years ago and they're still going strong to this day (they may not look as great as they once did, but they're still performing as well as the first day I got them, which is all that matters to me!).  So it might come as a surprise when I tell you that I've never bought any of ghd's styling products before.  I knew they existed because I see them every time I go to my hairdressers, but for some reason or another, I never felt compelled to pick anything up.

I was kindly sent ghd's Total Volume Foam to try out and have used it on several occasions over the festive period, mostly recently on NYE.  It's a light and non-sticky foam which promises to add soft but lasting volume and fullness to all hair types.  You can use it all over for extra body, or just concentrate it on areas that need it the most, like the roots.  It smells pleasant (unmistakeably that typical mainstream hair styling perfumed scent, but much more subtle which I prefer) and the pump makes it super easy to dispense the right amount each time.

To use, simply apply 2-4 pumps of the foam as required to damp hair before blow-drying.  The formula has ghd's Heat Protect System so your hair won't get frazzled.  Did it work for me?  It did, well at first anyway.  The foam added noticeable extra volume to my roots for about an hour and but then fell flat.  IMO it needs a blast of hairspray to be used in conjunction with it to make the volume last for a whole night out, so bear that in mind if you try it.  Other than that, I really liked it and found that it felt weightless in my hair which is always a plus for me.

ghd have recently launched a brand new hairstyles section to their website so you can now visit ghd for all of your new year hair inspiration needs!

Have you tried any of ghd's hair styling products?

  1. Really gorgeous photos as always :) I had my GHDs for 7 years too! They finally packed up a couple of weeks ago and I'm stuck for a choice of replacement, I don't know whether to reinvest in GHDs or try something new. I personally love hair foams so this is something I'd definitely consider trying, especially as the scent is subtle. I haven't tried any of the GHD range either- I've never seen it in a shop and hair products (for me anyway) tend to always be more of an impulse purchase x

    1. I got a replacement cable with plug from ebay and it was quite easy to fit (got OH to do it though!) - and it has well extended the life of my GHD's x

    2. Thanks :) I'm really dreading that mine will pack in soon - friends of mine who have had them found that theirs died after 6/7 years :( I know what you mean, I often pick up hair products when I'm randomly in Superdrug or the supermarket x

  2. If it works it's worth buying it - I will give it a try - not sure where I can get it though - is it available in stores at all or online only?

    1. You can usually find ghd products in hair salons (or ask your local one if they'd consider ordering some in for you). Other than that, you can buy them online direct from ghd (link above) or places like Lookfantastic, HQhair etc. Hope that helps! x

  3. I did try GHD hair products when they were new but they just didn't suit my hair type. I've been using their straighteners for over 6 years now and wouldn't change for any other brand. I like the fact they branched out with their styling products, xoxo.

    1. I've heard quite a few blogger say that so you're not alone. With hair styling products you really need to find something that works well with your hair otherwise it's just not gonna do anything for it xxx

    1. I don't know why it is really, I love the look of the packaging - maybe it's because I only ever see them in salons and they remind me of pushy hairdressers perhaps?! xx

  6. I'm always on the look out for volume creating products and haven't found one I love yet! Like you mentioned with this one, they just don't seem to hold very well :-( xx

    1. Yeah, most I've tried have been like this - look great for an hour or so then go flat / look like you haven't done anything to your hair! I'll continue to use this as I like the scent and the fact it doesn't feel heavy in my hair, but it definitely needs some hairspray help! xx
