Currently Using: Mascaras

Sunday 12 May 2013

Mascaras.  Oh, mascaras.  I used to have a serious addiction for them a few years ago, and couldn't go into a shop that sold them without coming out with at least one or two (or more if they were on offer!).  This addiction has calmed down since those days, but I still love trying them out.  At the moment I currently have five on the go which showcase the good, the not so good and the simply 'meh'.

The Waterproof/Smudgeproof One
Liz Earle Lash Definition Smudgeproof Mascara* (reviewed here) is the one I automatically go for if hayfever season is in full swing, or it's raining outside.  The water-resistant formula is fantastic, and unlike other waterproof mascaras, it's fairly easy to remove at the end of the day.  I love it because I can put it on in the morning and I know it'll stay put until I go to sleep.

The Natural Ones
I struggle to find natural mascaras that match up to their non-natural counterparts in terms of volumising and lasting on the lashes.  Bellápierre Lash Building Mascara (reviewed here) is good for defining and lengthening but it will run if it comes into contact with any molecule of water.  Lavera Intense Volumizing Mascara* (reviewed here) has a brilliant clump free formula, but it has a tendency to begin to flake towards the end of the day.

The Volumising One
Benefit Badgal Lash Mascara is a real love/hate product in the beauty world and I share a lot of the same feelings about it.  I love that it instantly volumises my lashes with just one coat, yet I hate that it smudges easily after a few hours of wear.  Argh!

The 'Meh' One
I think everyone's got a 'meh' mascara lurking somewhere in their stash.  For me, it's The Body Shop Big And Curvy Mascara.  It's just one that I don't reach for that often because it's well, just 'meh' and doesn't really do a great deal.

What mascaras are you currently using?
Have you tried any of these?

  1. I used to be the same, couldn't go anywhere without buying mascara. haha

Benefit Bad Gal does nothing at all for my lashes, neither does They're Real! Benefit mascaras and my lashes just don't seem to mix well. I'm currently using up L'oreal Voluminous Carbon Black.

    1. Badgal is so weird, I've seen Benefit MUAs use it at events and on some people, it looks great but not on others, it's strange!
I still haven't tried out They're Real but have a sample of it somewhere xx

  3. I'd like to put in a good word for Dr Hauschka mascara (the regular one, I haven't tried the volume). I really love it!. It is the only one I've ever used that doesn't clump, it's pretty subtle but you can build up layers so good if you like to vary your look, smells lovely, doesn't irritate my lash line, doesn't seem to run (but maybe I haven't been crying much?!) and no nasty flaky bits on your cheek. I love the eyeliner they do too, really smooth to apply and good colour. These days I only really pick out 'natural' makeup because I like the ingredients and company ethics so it's great that this is so good. Hauschka love!

    1. Thanks Lyndsay, I've been wanting to check out some Dr Hauschka make-up at some point, so I'll have a look at their mascara :) Sounds good! x

  4. Ive tried the Bella Pierre mascara and thoroughly enjoyed using it! But you are right natural mascaras never live up to non natural in terms of volumizing goodness, which is such a shame!

    1. It's a lovely mascara, just wish it lasted a bit longer on me! It does seem to be difficult to find really great natural mascaras x

  6. I have always been a 'one at a time' mascara user but since blogging and having amassed a collection I have one full size and a sample size or 2 on the go x

    1. Yeah when you're a blogger the perceptions of what's normal to use make-up wise seem to get skewed along the way :D It's a lot more sensible to just use one or two at any one time! x

  7. I have been using bareMinerals mascaras for quite a while. Volumizing formula for everyday, and waterproof flawless definition when I want my makeup to stay perfect all day long. I love them. I am not happy that they contain some of the ingredients that I try to avoid for daily wear, but they are much better than most others anyway, x

  8. I really want to start branching out with my mascara choices. It really does make a big impact depending on the type of brush you use on your lashes!

  10. It's amazing how hard it is to find the perfect mascara! So many boxes to tick! Too bad Bad Gal smudges after a few hours - I don't experience that so much with They're Real (I've never tried Bad Gal myself). Smudging is a huge problem I have with most mascaras though, especially for bottom lashes!

    1. It's near impossible! That, or my standards are too high maybe :D
I still haven't tried They're Real but have a sample of it somewhere in my stash, will give it a go soon and see how it compares x

  11. I'm using a Korres pro vitamin b and rice bran mascara which is the best one I've ever used. Isn't dramatic but lengthens really beautifully, and doesn't smudge or flake. I liked the BellaPierre one till I tried this and think Bad Gal dries out far too quickly and clumps too much for my liking. Thanks for the review!

    1. Thanks for the Korres rec, I'll check that out! I agree Bad Gal dries out much quicker than other mascaras sadly x

  12. I've been wanting to try Bad gal lash mascara but it sucks that it smudges easily. I can't seem to like benefit mascaras unfortunately :( xx

  13. I really need to spend more money on mascara, I always end up buying cheap ones to save money but they always smudge under my eyes.
The Liz Earle one sounds amazing!

    1. Some cheap highstreet ones are amazing, but a lot of them can be prone to smudging like you've experienced. The Liz Earle one is fantastic and not too pricey either :) x
