Luxury Xmas Gift Ideas: Laura Mercier Lumiere d'Ambre and Luxe Colour Portfolio review

Tuesday 12 November 2013

Laura Mercier's Christmas Holiday Palettes are well known and coveted every year, but there are many more luxury treats on offer at the LM counter that you may have missed.
Laura Mercier Lumiere d'Ambre* (50ml, £53.50, link)

My mum is a huge perfume fan, so every year I end up scouring the beauty counters in search of something suitable, yet different to what she already owns.  Laura Mercier's Lumiere d'Ambre Eau De Parfum was a new release earlier this year and is described as "soft, illuminating and mysterious".  It features top notes of Sparkling Mandarin, Water Lotus, Pink Pepper, mid notes of Jasmine Sambac, Vanilla Orchid, Rose Petals, and dry notes of Liquid Amber, Captive Musks and Ambrox.  This all blends into a warm, sensual, musky/woody scent that has enough floral notes in it to make it seductively feminine.
Laura Mercier Luxe Colour Portfolio* (£65, link)

Strictly speaking, this is a Limited Edition piece which is exclusive to Harvey Nichols in the UK, but I've found it for sale on Sephora and included the link above if anyone's interested (naughty I know!).  The Luxe Colour Portfolio features 6 Eye Colours, 3 Tightline Cake Eyeliners and 2 Second Skin Cheek Colours.  It's packaged in a thick, yet compact case with a half sized mirror and a handy 'Get The Look' leaflet which details three different looks you can achieve with the palette (shown below).
The 6 Eye Colours are:-

Morning Dew -  A very pale pink, matte.  Soft formula, but a little chalky.
African Violet - Purple pink with lots of gold shimmer, very pretty for a one colour lid look.
Violet Ink (limited edition shade) - Beautiful deep purple, matte and SUPER pigmented!
Lavalier (limited edition shade) - Metallic light silver grey, sheer and looks good as a highlight.
Grey Onyx (limited edition shade) - A medium metallic grey with blue/brown undertones.
Espresso Bean (limited edition shade) - Stunning dark matte brown, VERY pigmented!
The 3 Tightline Cake Eyeliners (these are pressed powder, matte formulas that you mix with a little water to create an eyeliner paste - really easy to do with a fine, pointed eyeliner brush):-

Black Ebony - A perfect true matte black.
Bleu Marine - Deep matte navy blue, gorgeous shade and makes blue such a wearable colour.
Mahogany Brown - A classic dark matte brown.

The 2 Second Cheek Colours are:-

Barely Pink - A soft, very pale pink with a light satin finish.  Doesn't really show up on my light olive complexion so it would be better suited for paler skintones IMO.
Lotus Pink - Pink coral with gold shimmer, reminds me of NARS Orgasm but a little less bright.

Summary: If the shades are to your liking, this is a handy palette that you can easily use for travelling.  The lighter eyeshadows shades are very sheer, but buildable, though it's those highly pigmented darker colours which really make this palette stand out from the others.  The blushers are a nice addition to make the portfolio feel complete, and  I was surprised by how easy the Tightline Cake Eyeliners were to apply, plus they're completely smudgeproof too!

Will you be buying any xmas gifts from Laura Mercier this year?

  1. I've never tried a Tightline Cake Eyeliner before - sounds like an interesting concept! African Violet seems to be in every single palette Laura Mercier has released, LOL! Having said that, it is one of my favourite eyeshadows (I got mine from their Lingerie Eye & Cheek palette). The perfume sounds lovely too - especially the Jasmine Sambac note.

  3. OH I love the look of this palette! I love her cake liners-they are great of you have hooded eyes like me! I prefer them to any kind of liquid liner!
