My Favourite Highlighters

Wednesday 20 November 2013

Highlighters can be strange things.  Pick the wrong one, and you could have a glittery, discoball mess gracing the tops of your cheekbones.  But pick the right one, and your face can (almost) completely transform into that of some mystical goddess.  So it's time I sung the praises of the ones that I love and cherish in my make-up collection.

Laura Mercier Mineral Illuminating Powder in Candlelight* (£26, link)
When you think of highlighters, the first thing that may come to mind if you're a beauty fan is the culter-than-cult Candlelight by Laura Mercier.  This pot of illuminating magic is constructed out of the softest and most finely milled mineral powder I've ever had the pleasure of using.  There are two shades available, but it's always Candlelight that's raved about, and for good reason.  It's the perfect light golden colour that delivers a beautiful glow with just the right amount of shimmer.  Yes, it's loose and sometimes messy to apply, but be patient with it and you'll be wholly rewarded.

Collection Shimmer Shades in Way To Glow (£4.19, link)
The best highstreet/drugstore highlighter I've come across so far has got to be Collection's Shimmer Shades in Way To Glow.  Here you have four blocks of multi-purpose goodness; a dark golden bronze, a light champagne, a peachy pink and a warm brown with pink undertones.  All feature fine shimmer and the shades can be used individually or you can swirl them together with a big brush (swatch of this shown below).  Best of all, you can use this compact as a highlight, blush, and bronzer   Incredible quality for less than a fiver!

Lily Lolo Shimmer Stripes in Honey Glow* (£19.99, link)
I've tried a couple of highlighters from natural brands, but none have particularly impressed me until I came across this offering from Lily Lolo.  The first time I used it, I went out to dinner with some friends and this baby yielded me many admiring compliments about how healthy and glowy I looked.  Described as a cocktail of pink, beige and bronze, this pressed mineral powder compact gives you the most gorgeous warm glow when you swirl all the stripes together (shown below).

Benefit Sun Beam and High Beam (minis shown, full sizes each £19.50, link)
If you prefer liquid formulations, then you can't beat Benefit's famed Sun Beam and High Beam.  They've spawned countless dupes, but I still believe the originals firmly hold their own when it comes to blendability and wear time.  Sun Beam is a lovely golden bronze highlighter, perfect for light-medium skintones and compliments a tan very well.  High Beam on the other hand is the polar opposite; a super pale pink that I love using for accentuating the top of the lips, as an inner eye highlight, and down the center of the nose.

What are your favourite highlighters?

P.S: The winners of The Body Shop giveaway are Vicki and Marvelle, congrats!

  3. I like Benefit's Watt's Up, MUA and recently one from The Body Shop. I don't like High Beam - I think I don't know how to apply it correctly, lol. X

  4. I LOVE highlighters! I haven't seen the Laura Mercier one before, I'll definitely be on the look out for that one!! I really like the benefit high beam too, and their moon beam! I like them not to be too OTT and shimmering on my skin, I just want them to give a natural glow! I think it's really great to see more and more highlighters coming out on the highstreet now though :)

  9. All very pretty! I'm not a big fan of highliters.. at least not powder ones cause I think they accentuate my big pores and oily skin but If i had to choose one that would be my The Balm Mary Loumanizer.. I'd also like to try high beam too xx

    1. Some of them can do that - I'd recommend finding ones that are really finely milled because they don't seem to emphasise pores as much as other powders. High Beam would be a great alternative though! xx

  10. I used to be super obsessed with highlighters earlier last year. I've actually never heard of Laura Mercier Candlelight but from the swatch is looks super pretty. Sun Beam has been on my wishlist for a while - I wish I could track down a mini. High Beam is one of my favourites but I do occasionally find it too pearly and white.

    1. Candlelight is a beauty, well worth checking out, as is Sun Beam. I sometimes have the same problem with High Beam, especially in summer when I've got more of a tan!
