Budget Beauty: Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge review

Friday 17 January 2014

Inspired by reading so many 'Best of 2013' posts, I decided that it was high time I picked up the much hyped Miracle Complexion Sponge from Real Techniques.

Real Techniques can do no wrong in my books, and it was love at first use with their budget friendly, Beauty Blender-esque offering.  The Miracle Complexion Sponge is simply amazing for applying any kind of liquid base to the face.  I've used it with my BB Creams and Tinted Moisturisers for a fresh, no fuss, everyday look, and with my heavier coverage foundations in the evenings.  With the latter, I find it works the best in achieving a beautiful flawless finish because it helps to sheer out the liquid, but still remains buildable without ever looking cakey.

The shape of the sponge makes it easy to hold, the different areas are also a breeze to work with (the pointy end is ideal for those tricky areas, whereas the flat part allows you to cover larger amounts of spaces quicker) and its texture is light and bouncy, but retains the right amount of firmness to get the job done.

I don't find that it absorbs as much product as other sponges I've used in the past have, so it's perfect for using with high-end foundations without the worry that you're wasting anything.  It's a little annoying to clean which was to be expected, but I rinse it under warm water after nearly every use (and always after the second) with some Dr Bronner's Magic Soap and let it air dry.  All in all, a handy piece of kit to have in your make-up bag!

The Real Techniques Miracle Sponge is priced at around £4.99 and I bought mine from feelunique.com

Do you use the Miracle Complexion Sponge or something similar?

  1. I've never used a makeup sponge and I'd quite like this one but I've never seen it in stores anywhere!

    1. Have a look in larger Boots stores if there's one near you :)

  2. Sounds good, I've never used sponges to apply my foundation, I much rather wash my brushes or fingers than a sponge filled with foundation! I do like the shape, I can see how this would be great for the contours of our face! I do want to get more RT brushes this year!

  5. I like the shape of this, but I already have the cosmopolitan one and I don't use it very often so I think I will give this one a miss. Love the color tho ;) x

    1. I've heard it's quite similar to the Cosmo one so you definitely don't need both :) x

  7. This sounds like a really good way of applying your base, I like that it doesn't absorb much product. Thats a real selling point. I'm hoping to use my Boots points to buy one

    1. I love it for the same reason, you don't feel like you're wasting loads of product!

  8. I haven't tried this before but I have tried the BeautyBlender. I find that sponges really soak up a lot of product sometimes and they're hard to wash. I'll have to try this one out.

    1. I used a Beauty Blender for about a year before trying this one (actually bought this one to replace it) and the BB soaks up a LOT more product than the RT. Both are annoying to wash though x

  12. Do you use this wet or dry? How comparable is it to the beauty blender? Would love to know more. x

    1. I've used it both ways and can't really say I've noticed a massive difference in application between damp or dry, so I guess it's just a matter of personal preference. I used a BB for about a year (bought the RT to replace it) and found that the BB soaks up a lot more product than the RT. Application wise, they both perform in the same way. I'd say the main difference between the two is that the RT is bigger and feels lighter. Hope that helps! x

  13. Previously I've mainly used a compact powder foundation and have used the included sponge. If I use liquid foundation I always usually use my Real Techniques buffing brush. I do have the Miracle Complexion sponge and love the finish it gives but for some reason I still usually just prefer to use a brush. I currently use Rimmel's Stay Matte liquid mousse foundation and for that I actually just use my fingers :)

    1. I absolutely love the RT Buffing Brush and still use that on a regular basis, though I find myself using it more for just mineral foundations nowadays and the sponge for liquid. There are one or two base products that I always, always apply with my fingers (terre d'Oc BB Foundation is one) no matter what tools I have!
