Budget Beauty: Trying Out New GOSH Makeup for S/S16 - Review & Swatches

Friday 11 March 2016

GOSH are an affordable make-up brand that are exclusive to Superdrug here in the UK. I've only ever tried out one of their primers and a few of their nail polishes in the past, so I was very excited when a package of their new S/S16 releases arrived at Wolves HQ. Let's have a play!

I love adding new eyeshadow palettes to my collection and I was thrilled to discover that this one contains all matte shades. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a little shimmer in my shadows, but I feel that all matte eyeshadow palettes aren't as often readily available on the high street compared to their shimmery brothers and sisters.

This is GOSH's first all matte eyeshadow palette and the shades are inspired by the 'effortless, pared-down cool attitude that's synonymous with Scandi chic' (GOSH are a Danish brand after all!). Cue a beautiful cool-toned neutral friendly palette of wearable shades - there's not a colour here that I wouldn't use. Packaging is a slim black plastic compact with a large mirror which feels sturdy enough to throw into a travel bag.

Formula-wise, these are silky soft to the touch, long wearing and they blend well. The lightest two shades along the top are very pale and barely show up on my skin (swatches below), but they work well as an inner corner highlight. The darker shades are much more pigmented and really 'pop' over an eyeshadow primer/base like UDPP. My favourites are the taupe and earthy tones - gorgeous!

GOSH Lumi Drops in 004 Peach and GOSH Primer Plus+ Illuminating Skin Perfector review
GOSH Lumi Drops in 004 Peach* (15ml, £7.99, link) and GOSH Primer Plus+ Illuminating Skin Perfector* (30ml, £14.49, link)

Fans of glowy skin will definitely have to pick up these two new additions. GOSH Lumi Drops is a liquid highlighter which comes in three different shades. They're similar to MAC's Lustre Drops in that you can mix them with your foundation to give an overall brightening/radiance effect to the skin or you can use them as a highlighter. I have the shade Peach which I actually prefer to use as just a glowy liquid blush - I don't think this colour works well when it's mixed with foundation as it's a little too orangey-pink toned for that purpose. As a liquid blush, it looks very pretty and reminds me of NARS Orgasm, but more peachy and dewy.

As I mentioned earlier, I've tried out a primer from GOSH before and really liked it so I was looking forward to using this new one. The Primer Plus+ Illuminating Skin Perfector is the one to reach for if your skin is looking dull and tired as it does help to perk it up and has a dewy finish. As is the trend with primers at the moment, this one is infused with skincare friendly ingredients such as Sea Buckthorn and Vitamin E, to create a smooth, hydrated base for make-up application. If you have oily skin, this may be too much moisture for you, but I liked it on my oily/combo skin as long as I didn't apply it to my T-zone. Dry skins will no doubt love this even more.
GOSH Rebel Eyes Mascara in Black review
GOSH Rebel Eyes Mascara in Black* (10ml, £8.99, link)

I'm a huge mascara junkie and love highstreet mascaras - you really don't need to spend a lot these days to get a good one! Rebel Eyes is a really, really good mascara. The curved brush has lots of tiny 'bristles' to evenly coat the lashes and the rubberized material offers enough flexibility to get a great sweeping motion going on so you can get your mascara done and dusted quickly. Stayed put on my lashes for over 12 hours with zero smudging or flaking and also held up well when I got caught in the rain. Big thumbs up from me!
GOSH Lip Oils in Sea Buckthorn & Raspberry review
GOSH Lip Oils in 002 Sea Buckthorn & 004 Raspberry* (4ml, £7.49 each, link)

Concept wise, these Lip Oils sounded like a good idea and they're also obvious looking dupes for the Clarins Lip Oils. They're designed to nourish, soothe, hydrate and protect lips, but in reality I found them to be something of an unnecessary, gimicky product. On the lips, they looked and felt like a normal non-sticky lipgloss with a tiny, tiny hint of colour (swatches below), but I didn't find them to be hydrating or nourishing at all - if anything my lips felt a little drying after an hour or so once the oil had worn off. I'd say skip these and just invest in a decent lip balm instead.
GOSH Forever Matt Eyeshadow Sticks in 10 Twisted Brown & 11 Dark Brown review swatches

Now these are something pretty damn amazing! Matt twist-up eyeshadow sticks that are richly pigmented, waterproof, smudgeproof, long wearing, creamy and they blend beautifully. Really easy to apply, you can just swipe these all over the lid and blend with your little finger if you're in a rush - love them! I have the shades Twisted Brown (gorgeous taupey brown) and Dark Brown (a straight up matt dark brown), and I seriously want to pick up every other colour in this range.
GOSH Velvet Touch Matte Lipstick in 009 Sweetness review swatches
GOSH Velvet Touch Matte Lipstick in 009 Sweetness* (4g, £6.99, link)

I've seen a few raves for these Velvet Touch Matte Lipsticks that launched last year, so I was curious to see what all the fuss was about. For 2016, GOSH have added a further four matte shades to the range including this pale pink number called Sweetness. I don't think that this shade suits me, but I did like the formula as it was long lasting and felt comfortable on my lips (not drying like other matte lipsticks can be). I'll definitely be looking into the other three new shades as they're more neutral/nude/brown toned which appeal to me more than this particular colour, but if you like your pinks matte, this is one to check out.

  3. I was most interested in trying out the lip oils as I haven't tried a product like this out yet but if they just look like clear lip glosses then I think I might give them a miss! x
