How To: Getting the most out of your Hair Masks & Treatments

Sunday 14 April 2013

If you like to keep your hair in tip top condition and/or you're just plagued with problematic hair like I am, then this post is for you.  Here are my top five pieces of advice for getting the most out of your hair masks and treatments.

(1)  Know your hair type and what it's main problems are.
Unless you're blessed with naturally amazing hair, there's probably something that bugs you about it that you want to try and control, whether it gets frizzy all the time or is super dry etc.  Make a note of its problems and jot these down along with what hair type you have (e.g brittle, oily, dry, combination - oily roots, dry lengths & ends).  With this in mind, you can go and find the right products that may work for you.  So if you have overall dry hair, you want to go for moisturising/hydrating/intensive treatments.  Or if your hair is oily, pick something that is marked as balancing.   This can also work for those with combination hair too if you like to use your treatments all over.

(2)  Use the right amount of product.
It can be easy to go overboard and use way too much product, but doing this can over saturate the hair and make it greasy or looking too flat once it's dried.  On the other hand, using too little product can mean that the treatment doesn't do anything, so experiment with the amounts that you use.

(3)  If using a treatment on wet hair, get as much water out as possible before applying.
Gently squeeze as much water out as you can, because having having too much water in your hair will only flood the treatment you're using causing the product to have minimal effect on what it's going to do.  Copy what good hairdressers do and make a habit out of towel drying your hair before applying your masks.

(4)  Wrap it up and double the time.
I've often found that wrapping my hair up in a hair turban (try pound shops for good cheap ones) or a towel after I've applied the treatment, can help the product absorb better into the cuticles of the hair.  I also usually double the length of time that's written on the back, but again experiment with different time lengths and see what works for you and your hair.

(5)  Invest in a Tangle Teezer.
To avoid damaging and breaking your hair, you should never brush it whilst its wet with a regular brush, but you need to distribute the product evenly through the hair so get a Tangle Teezer.  These plastic random shaped brushes are amazing and well worth the money.  I've had my Original purple one for over a year now and it still looks like new.  If the price puts you off, you can use a wide tooth comb, but if your hair is particularly long or thick like mine, a Tangle Teezer works so much better.

What are your top tips for getting the most out of hair treatments and masks?
Do you do any of the above?

  8. Great post, I was planning a hair mask night tonight actually! I've used the Macadamia and B&B ones in the picture but weren't truly blown away by them (I have super dry hair). Is the LG one any good? Or do you have any others you'd recommend?

    Thanks!

    1. I really like the Louise Galvin one and it works well with my dry hair but I'm not sure if it's intensive enough for super dry hair. I reviewed it here if you fancy a read: http://wewereraisedbywolves.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/haircare-review-louise-galvin-natural.html

Macadamia is my holy grail but as you've already tried it, I'd say give the Morrocan Oil one a go if you're after something which is very hydrating. I'd also recommend anything from Ojon and Pureology to look into!

    2. Because it's plastic it rinses out easily but means you get the coconut oil all the way through the hair. x
