Women's Health: Tisserand - The Restore Balance Discovery Kit review #MoodBalance

Tisserand - The Restore Balance Discovery Kit review
Whether you're menstruating, experiencing the first symptoms of the perimenopause, or going through the menopause, Tisserand's new Restore Balance range is here to offer some natural aromatherapy help.

Launched just last month, British aromatherapy brand, Tisserand, has released a dedicated new range of natural products to support women through all the physical and emotional stages of life. A tried and trusted natural brand since 1974, Tisserand has a vast range of products available and a wealth of knowledge and expertise to draw from, so it's great to see a range such as Restore Balance on the shelves.

As the name suggests, Restore Balance addresses the elephant in the room when it comes to discussing women's emotional changes that occur naturally through menstruation, perimenopause, and menopause. The most common symptom that around 70% of women report when going through these life stages is a 'change in mood', and thus Restore Balance aims to help through its expert blend of comforting Geranium, nurturing Rose, and uplifting Clary Sage essential oils.

In fact, 3 out of 4 women reported more 'settled emotions' after using Tisserand's Restore Balance range for just two weeks, which certainly shows that there are some empowering natural properties in these aromatherapy products.

One of the easiest ways to try out this new range is with the handy Restore Balance Discovery Kit which comprises of three travel-size items; a 9ml Body Oil, a 9ml Body & Room Mist, and a 10ml Pulse Point Roller Ball. Not only are these brilliant 'try me' sizes, but they're also super convenient to use when traveling or simply to have in your handbag when you're out and about.

How To Use
I love the 100% natural essential oil blend which is both calming and revitalising at the same time. You can start your day by applying the Body Oil all over after a shower, and then top up the soothing fragrance by spritzing a little of the Body & Room Mist in your car or around your home office. If you're on the go, apply the Pulse Point Rollerball to your wrists as and when needed, inhaling the natural scent deeply to bring instant calm to stressful moments. Mood swings be gone!

Sustainable Periods with WUKA Period Pants & Sea + Flo Menstrual Cup #SustainableLifestyle

Wednesday, 11 August 2021

Let's talk about periods. They're not much fun and they can be uncomfortable and annoying at the best of times, and horribly painful at the worst, yet nearly half the population experiences them every month. One way to make periods more comfortable is to switch your menstruation products from disposable plastic pads and tampons, to comfy period pants and menstrual cups. The environment will thank you as well!

We've all seen the factual memes and awful images of the ever-growing plastic pollution problem that is damaging our oceans and the environment. Much of the focus of this has been on disposable, single-use plastic products that we use every day, but it's only been fairly recently that awareness has been made of all the disposable menstruation products that are clogging up our rivers and beaches too.

I started my periods when I was 11 years old and back then, things like period pants, reusable pads/cloths, and menstrual cups weren't readily available, so like everyone else's family that had young girls, my mum went to Boots and bought me a packet of sanitary pads. It's scary to think of just how many pads and tampons I've used since then, and how many are languishing in landfill sites all around the world still decomposing right now.

But it's never too late to change and make a difference, so ladies, if you're reading this, it's time to say goodbye to disposable pads and tampons and embrace sustainable periods! There are so many different reusable options available nowadays, and I wanted to share just two that have helped me to make the switch.

WUKA Ultimate Bikini Briefs (from £17.99, link)

When I first began researching period pants, there was one brand that kept coming up time and time again and so many friends and family members have recommended them to me, so now it's my turn to rave about them! WUKA (which stands for 'Wake Up Kick Ass') has the best range IMO and they are wonderfully ethical with a strong focus on education to break the taboo around periods, body positivity, inclusivity and female empowerment in general. Their period pants are made from sustainable and plant-friendly materials which are responsibly sourced, and they're delivered in plastic-free packaging.

I absolutely love their Ultimate Bikini Briefs which are made from organic cotton and come in a range of sizes from 2XS to 4XL. These period pants completely replace the need for pads or tampons and hold 15ml of period flow so they can be worn for up to 8 hours. After use, simply pop them in the washing machine as normal without any fabric conditioner, hang them out on the washing line to dry, and then re-use again and again!

They are SO comfortable to wear and I had no issues with leaks or odours. They do run a little on the small side so I'd recommend going up a size when ordering. Also available in packs of 3 and 5, and with different flow options to suit your needs.

Sea + Flo Menstrual Cup* (£25, link)

If you're a tampon wearer, you'll probably prefer a menstrual cup and these really are such a great eco-friendly option as they can last up to 10 years with the correct care. They're also ideal for those who want something a bit more convenient and discreet than period pants, plus they are amazing for travel!

The market for menstrual cups has grown massively in the same way as period pants which means there are lots of different brands to choose from. I like this one from Sea + Flo as the cup is made from 100% FDA-approved medical-grade silicone so you can rest assured that there are no unnecessary toxins such as parabens or BPA, and no latex which makes it ideal for those who have allergies.

Menstrual cups are surprisingly very comfortable to use and wear, though it can take a few tries at first to properly insert them - there are loads of handy tips and YouTube vids for guidance on this. Sea + Flo has some excellent articles, as well as cup sizing recommendations on their site so do check them out! Like period pants, I have no problems with leaks and you can wear one for up to 12 hours, day and night.

Overall thoughts
I know what you might be thinking; the initial cost seems to be the main reason why women don't make the switch or put off making the purchase until later on. I had the same feeling, but whilst the initial outlay may seem high at first, you will save money in the long term. Not only are reusable menstrual products a healthier, safer, and far more comfortable option than their mainstream disposable counterparts, the benefits to the environment mustn't be ignored here. Yes it sucks and it's unfair that as women we have to pay for these things, so why not go with the more sustainable product? After all, can we really put a price on our environment?

Have you made the switch to sustainable period products?

Introducing: Fleur - Eco Luxury Femcare / Period Subscription Box review

Monday, 10 May 2021

Subscription boxes are a great way to treat yourself every month, and with Fleur, you can even make your periods more convienent, bearable and dare I say, a tiny bit enjoyable?! OK, it's probably wishful thinking for the latter part but at least opening this box is fun!

I was recently introduced to Fleur via Instagram and their positive attitude to creating a 'feel good' luxury femcare subscription box with an eco-friendly vibe, definitely resonated with me. Their boxes have been specially curated to mimic a spa experience to help you enjoy some period self-care me-time, so if you're looking for a mix of skincare and yummy snacks and treats, in addition to your femcare essentials, you're in the right place.

Fleur were kind enough to send me a box to show you all, so let's get stuck in and see what's inside.

Plastfree Sanitary Pads Night Pack

When you subscribe to Fleur, you can specify whether you'd like to receive sanitary pads, tampons or a mix of both, and everything that they send you will be organic and plastic-free. In my box, I found a pack of 10 Night Sanitary Pads from Plastfree. These pads are biodegradable, eco-friendly, fragrance-free and free from any additional chemicals, with leak-proof wings and a high absorbency layer. Unlike mainstream plastic-based sanitary pads that can take over 500 years to decompose, Plastfree pads will biodegrade in just two years.

Jade Facial Roller

I was excited to see what kind of pampering products Fleur would include their boxes and I love this handy Jade Facial Roller which is perfect for indulging in some facial massages with. There are lots of techniques that you can use with these to depuff and encourage healthy collagen production and blood flow, and I find they work very well with your favourite facial oil.

Glam Up Clarifying Oatmeal Mask, Revitale Gold Collagen Eye Masks and UpCircle Eye Cream sample

I must admit that I was a little disappointed to see a selection of disposable, single-use sheet and eye masks in a box that has such an eco-friendly ethos about it. However, I've tried them out and they are lovely products. The Glam Up Clarifying Oatmeal Mask is a nice me-time treat that most skin types will enjoy, and the Revitale Gold Collagen Eye Masks are perfect for soothing tired eyes after a long day. I'm already a big fan of UpCircle's skincare and their Eye Cream helps to brighten and firm the delicate eye area.

Baylis & Harding Jasmine & Apple Blossom Luxury Hand Gel

Next up, there's a travel size bottle of Baylis & Harding Jasmine & Apple Blossom Luxury Hand Gel which smells beautiful! Formulated with added moisturisers, it doesn't leave your hands feeling stripped or dry afterwards and kills 99.9% bacteria.

Popcorn Shed Sweet & Salty Mini Popcorn

Moving onto the snacks, this bag of Popcorn Shed Sweet & Salty Mini Popcorn really hits the spot when you can't decide which flavour sensation to go for. It's vegan-friendly, gluten-free and less than 133 calories per pack for a guilt-free treat.

NOMO Caramel Choc Bar & Moo Free White Bar

Indulge your sweet tooth with these two delicious vegan-friendly chocolate bars! I love NOMO and their Caramel Choc Bars are literally heaven on earth with smooth and gooey caramel centre, whilst the Moo Free White Bar is a sweet and creamy solid bar of dairy-free white chocolate. Yum!

Rose Sweets & Heath & Heather Organic Raspberry Leaf Tea Bags

To round off the box, I found a selection of lovely rose-shaped gummy sweets and two samples of Health & Heather Raspberry Leaf Tea Bags which are caffeine-free and help to alleviate period pain.

Fleur Box is available as a monthly subscription from £17.99, or can be purchased as a one-off box for £22.50 from fleurstore.co.uk

Women's Health: LIVIA 'The Off Switch For Menstrual/Period Pain' - 3 Month Trial Review

LIVIA 'The Off Switch For Menstrual Pain' - 3 Month Trial Review
Period pain is something that affects a huge percentage of menstruating women, and levels of its severity and impact on day-to-day life can vary from woman to woman - there's no singular pain factor that's the same for everyone.

My experience with Period Pain
Some women can go through much of their adult lives and not have their periods bother them that much, but for others, they can be absolutely awful, and I've struggled a lot with severe period pain ever since I started menstruating at the age of 11. I remember having to take a lot of time off school because the pain was so bad, and after countless trips to the GP, I was simply told to take some higher-strength Ibuprofen and basically 'get over it'. For the first couple of years, this seemed to work to some degree as it dulled the worst of it, but by the time I was 16/17, my body had built up a tolerance to both high-strength Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, to the point where they no longer did anything and I still have issues with them doing nothing for me to this day.

At college, a friend recommended that I visit her female GP who was more understanding of these issues, so I requested a transfer and was accepted at her surgery. She asked me a lot of questions about the pain and prescribed Mefenamic Acid, an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) which worked wonders! It even helped with my heavy periods and I felt happier than I had done in years. My periods were no longer a problem, until two years later, when the Mefenamic Acid suddenly stopped working. The crippling period pain was back, so I made an appointment and saw the same GP, who then prescribed Naproxen, a different type of painkiller. I had a lot of side effects from it (heartburn, nausea, headaches etc) and eventually stopped taking it after five months when I started to get heart palpitations. The GP suggested trying Mefenamic Acid again which I did, but it no longer worked for me. That was the point where she shook her head and suggested I look at alternative methods, as I had exhausted all of the options that she knew of.

LIVIA 'The Off Switch For Menstrual Pain' - 3 Month Trial Review
Here's Livia in action - the gel pads are slightly higher up than usual as I was getting more pain in those areas on the day that I took this photo, but you can adjust them to wherever you need them to be and you can use them on your lower back as well.

I've done a lot of Googling and chatting to other women over the years, and have tried so many different methods to manage the severity of my period pain. These include exercising more, acupuncture, diet changes, different painkillers, taking different versions of the Pill, and even trying hypnotherapy. Some helped more than others, but none of them had a noticeable impact.

Last year, I came across a news story online about a new drug-free solution to period pain called Livia. The startup business behind it had successfully crowdfunded over $1.7 million dollars via Indiegogo, which perhaps gives you a good indicator of how many women worldwide have been looking for an alternative like this!

What is Livia and How Does It Work?
Livia is basically a TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) device which works as a pain management treatment system by using electrotherapy. The device is composed of a rechargeable unit which sends light electrical pulses into the body through the skin via two electrodes which are placed over the areas where you're experiencing the pain. This means that the high-frequency electrical signals sent out by the device effectively 'blocks out' the pain signals and stops them from being delivered to your brain, so that you no longer 'feel' the pain. Low-frequency bursts of mild electrotherapy also help to activate the natural pain control response that we all have, by releasing additional beta-endorphins - pretty clever stuff eh?

How Do I Use It?
The first thing you'll need to do is charge the Livia unit for 12 hours before using (it's easy to charge it via a USB or phone charger). Once charged, you simply attach it to the waistband of your trousers/skirt etc, and plug in the electrodes which are attached to flower-shaped gel pads. Stick these onto the area where you're feeling pain, making sure that they're at least 10-15 cm apart in distance, and then switch Livia on. You can increase and decrease the strength as you wish by pressing the plus and minus buttons. There's no time limit for how long you can use it for, but I found it most effective for around 15-20 minutes as the effects continue for a little while afterwards. As always, I recommend reading the instructions in full before using any new device.

What Does It Feel Like?
I tried out the lowest setting first and it felt like a series of gentle, small vibrations. It's a little strange at first, but definitely not painful. As I adjusted to the higher settings, the vibrations get more intense of course, so I'd suggest working your way up to them, rather than going straight in at the deep end. That said, once you get used to the sensation of it, you quickly realise that it's not painful - it just feels weird to begin with!

LIVIA 'The Off Switch For Menstrual Pain' - 3 Month Trial Review
Did It Work For Me?
I tested out Livia for three months to see if the results or feelings would change from period to period, and I found that it was pretty consistent throughout. I get the most period pain during the first three days of my period and I found that Livia definitely helped with the severity of the cramps. However, it didn't make them go away completely and I still experienced some moderate pain during those first three days each time, though it was a lot less than I usually felt. If you have milder period pain, it may eliminate all of that, but as a severe pain sufferer, I'd say it helped to reduce the pain by about 50-60% to give you a rough idea, though I appreciate that we're all different with our pain levels.

Overall Thoughts?
Livia is by no means the miracle product that I desperately wanted it to be, but it has certainly helped me to discover a much better method of period pain management and I'm thrilled that it's something that women can try which is a drug-free option. I strongly believe that many young girls and women are taking far too many painkillers on a regular basis for period pain, which can result in a tolerance being built up that may have problematic consequences for them later in their lives (I know it has done this for me), so I fully support any methods that could help to reduce that dependency.

I do feel that Livia is very expensive for what it is though, and you could probably find a similar TENS device for a much cheaper price (you must factor in purchasing additional gel pads etc). But for those who have the budget for it, it's a wonderfully convenient piece of kit to have in your handbag, ready to blast away those pesky cramps so that you can get on with your day.

LIVIA* is currently on offer as a complete kit for £119 (original price £149) and is available direct from mylivia.com

Women's Health: Femna Confusion Infusion Herbal Tea for PMS review

Healthy Living: Femna Confusion Infusion Herbal Tea for PMS/Mood Swings review
PMS is the bane of many menstruating women's lives, but can a natural herbal tea really help with those pesky monthly mood swings?

I've suffered from PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) ever since I started my periods at the age of 11, and it's been one hell of a rollercoaster to ride into adulthood. My symptoms tend to vary in their extremities from month to month; I may manage to 'get away' with just a few 'mild' annoyances like breakouts, bloating, headaches and feeling more tired than usual, but then I have times when I experience full-blown PMS to the point where I find it incredibly difficult to get out of bed due to migraines, nausea and feeling depressed.

I'm lucky enough to have a local female GP who understands periods and PMS, and for people who have the milder to moderate symptoms, a few tweaks in your daily life such as eating a more balanced and healthier diet, and doing more exercise, can make a big difference to managing the worst of PMS. However, one symptom that I've always struggled with has been mood swings, so I was interested to see what natural alternatives were out there to help with these.

Whilst I was researching online, an email popped up in my inbox from an independent wellbeing brand called Femna, and it was like the universe was putting us in touch! Spooky, eh?!

Healthy Living: Femna Confusion Infusion Herbal Tea for PMS/Mood Swings review
Femna are a small Berlin-based company who specialises in women's well-being, and they've developed a range of natural teas and products to help in the areas of PMS, menstruation, fertility, pregnancy and menopause. Founded by two young social entrepreneurs, Maxie and Emily, these two women are committed to helping other females in a more holistic and natural manner, rather than the traditional Western approach which sees women popping countless pills and not really fully understanding what's happening to their own bodies.

When I browsed their products, a pop-up questionnaire appeared at the bottom of the left-hand side of their website, with some short statements about PMS and how you feel when you have it. Typically, I ended up ticking 'all of the above', and was re-directed to the Confusion Infusion Tea.  I was curious to see if it would help with my mood swings, and Femna kindly sent me a sample to try.

The Confusion Infusion Tea* is blend of beneficial anti-inflammatory herbs to help with general PMS and mood swings. It contains Lady's Mantle, Yarrow, St John's Wort, Lemon Balm, Silverweed and Peppermint to help calm the mind, soothe menses pain and brighten your overall mood. The tea is a loose-leaf one, so you just need to add two teaspoons to 200ml boiling water, infuse, strain and enjoy. You can drink 2-3 cups a day during the week before your period is due for the most noticeable results. It tastes similar to Green Tea strangely enough which I found pleasant and can be taken warm or cold, although I would recommend warm for the best soothing benefits.

Overall thoughts?
This tea did seem to help a little with my PMS mood swing symptoms. I didn't notice any huge changes, but I did feel a bit less snappy and my housemates kindly commented that I was 'less moody than usual' which is a firm positive! I'll certainly finish up the bag and consider repurchasing it in the future.

Femna Confusion Infusion Herbal Tea* (€8.90, 50g which makes 25-20 cups of tea) is available from femna.eu)

Have you tried anything like this for PMS?

P.S: Always visit your GP for professional advice if you're struggling with PMS, depression or anything else, and remember that you can request to see a different GP if you feel that the first one you see isn't listening or taking you seriously. Trust me, I've been there and it's always worth the effort to find the right GP to help you.

Women's Health: Talking About Periods + Bloom & Nora Eco-Friendly / Reusable Sanitary Pads review

Bloom & Nora Eco-Friendly / Reusable Sanitary Pads review
Reusable sanitary pads are something that I've been toying with trying out for a long time, but I just kept putting it off. Thankfully, I've started to see several women who I follow via blogs and Youtube, talking more about them recently, which has helped to somewhat 'normalise' the idea of reusable sanitary protection in my mind.

It's bizarre, isn't it? Ever since I started my periods, I've been conditioned to think of sanitary protection as merely these disposable things that should be wrapped up discreetly and binned after use. Out of sight, out of mind maybe? I remember my mum walking with me to Boots so that I could purchase a pack of Always pads and a Clearasil skincare starter set - two items that symbolise a 'rite of passage' into the beginning of womanhood for so many young girls. It was all so embarrassing and I remember trying desperately to avoid eye contact the (female!) sales assistant at the checkout. Then came the trauma of tampons slightly later on; that whispering in the girl's bathroom to your best friend in the cubicle next door, "how does it go in?!', and the tears that followed afterwards when you think that there's something 'wrong' with you because it feels so unnatural to have an item jammed up there, as well as the anxiety and sheer horror that I felt when I first read about TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome).

Needless to say, periods and sanitary protection weren't something that was discussed openly in my home or at school. My mum tried her best, but she was as embarrassed talking about it, as I was listening to her. I don't ever recall the subject coming up at school, other than in the context that you had to tell the P.E teacher (in front of everyone) that you were 'on', so you could be excused from having a shower - they even had a period register for it! I didn't have many female friends at school except my best friend, who was usually too shy to talk about things like periods with me, and my sister is much younger, so periods and what sanitary protection should be used was something that I had to largely figure out for myself. How I wished the internet and social media was a bigger thing back then!

Fast forward to 2018 and the world seems to have changed so much. There are now national campaigns to address the unnecessary stigma and embarrassment around periods, and there are charities that deliver sanitary pads and tampons to schools so that young girls don't have to suffer from period poverty (where girls skip school because their families can't afford to purchase sanitary protection - yes this happens sadly here in the UK). Nowadays, you can even get period subscription boxes delivered straight to your door every month too - I would have loved one of those as a teenager! We haven't managed to abolish the ridiculous Tampon Tax yet, but The European Commission says it is aiming to bring in a zero rate for sanitary products this year and the UK government has already legislated to allow this to happen as soon as the rules change, according to the BBC.

Throughout all of these progressions, debates have started to rise up regarding the huge amount of waste that's generated by using disposable sanitary protection, most of which either ends up in a landfill or finds its way into the oceans causing further pollution problems there. Slowly, I've started to see women open up about periods and the products that they use via social media, blogs and YouTube, and as many of us are trying to do our bit for the Environment, reusable sanitary options make so much sense.

I've tried Moon Cups and Diva Cups, but neither worked out for me as a long-term solution, so it was time to test out some reusable pads. Bloom & Nora very kindly sent me one of their trial packs to try out and here's how I got on!

Bloom & Nora Eco-Friendly / Reusable Sanitary Pads
If you're an environmentally-friendly mum, you may have already heard of Bloom & Nora as their sister company TotsBots, are one of the leading independent brands of reusable nappies in the UK. Bloom & Nora specialise in eco-friendly reusable cloth sanitary pads that come in a range of sizes and styles. 'Bloom' are the bold and brighter pads that you can see above, and 'Nora' are the ones that are available in a bright white. I was instantly attracted to the more colourful Bloom options, so I decided to try out the Bloomers Trial Kit which includes:-

  • 1 x Mini Pad
  • 1 x Midi Pad
  • 1 x Maxi Pad
  • 1 x Mighty Pad
  • 1 x Out & About Bag

What are they made from?
The Bloom pads feature an absorbent core that's made from a soft surface layer of natural Bamboo fibre (and this feels SO soft against your most delicate parts - honestly, it's really nice not to have something plasticy down there!) and two layers of Polyester Microfibre. There's also a unique stay dry binding which provides a resilient barrier against leaks and locks everything away in the absorbent core, whilst the outer layer is waterproof for extra protection and peace of mind.

Sizing
The trial kit includes four sizes; Mini (light flow), Midi (regular/medium flow), Maxi (medium to heavier flow), and Mighty (heavy flow, night & postpartum use). Each size is available to purchase individually or in packs of three. For my body shape and needs, I found the Mighty pad to be much too large for me, so I used the Maxi size as my night time pad instead. I'd recommend checking the sizes/lengths on the website before ordering if you are a more petite woman.

Bloom & Nora Eco-Friendly / Reusable Sanitary Pads
From L-R: Mighty, Maxi, Midi and Mini Bloom Pads

Testing them out
The poppers on the outside attach neatly to your underwear and I found the pads were very comfortable to wear; they stayed put and I didn't experience any problems with them - no leaks, no disposable/plastic 'rustling' noise, no discomfort. I was so nervous at first about wearing them outside of the house, but I needn't have been. They did the job perfectly and I felt fully protected at all times. I found the pads to be a lot more absorbent than disposables, and I particularly noticed this on heavier flow days - I definitely needed less trips to the loos throughout the day which was appreciated and I  only needed to change the pads after a few hours of wear. I've never been one to buy fragranced/scented disposable pads, but for those who are curious, I didn't notice any 'bad smells/odours' from using these.

Washing & Drying
I followed the info on the Bloom & Nora website and washed them as normal in non-bio liquid with the rest of my laundry, but without any fabric conditioner, as this will coat the fabric fibres of the pads and reduce their absorbency. I generally wash everything on the standard eco setting on my washing machine which is pre-set at 30 degrees and I didn't experience any problems - they came out perfectly clean. To prevent any staining, I gave them a quick pre-rinse in the sink with cold water before putting them into the laundry (never use hot water as this sets stains). The pads are fast-drying, so you don't really need to tumble dry them (they can change shape if you do). Instead, I popped them onto the radiator to air dry naturally.

Storage
The Trial Kit comes with an Out & About Bag which I found very useful! It has two separate waterproof sections so that you can easily store your clean and used pads without any fuss. Wash the whole bag with your used pads and you're good to go! There are even convenient little poppers on the sides so that it can be folded down into a more compact size, and this bag will store 4-6 pads.

Overall thoughts?
I'm so happy that I had such a positive experience with these Bloom & Nora pads and I'll definitely continue to use them. During my trialling of these, I did use some disposable pads alongside them as the kit only contained four pads, so I'll certainly be ordering some more for next time. I think the only time that I would now use disposables are for holidays and longer trips away where I wouldn't have access to a washing machine, but for every other time, I'll be sticking with these!

Bloom & Nora Bloomers Trial Kit retails for £33.95* and is available from totsbots.com

Health & Wellbeing: Pukka Night Time & Womankind Supplements review

Pukka Night Time & Womankind Supplements review
I've been reading up on Ayurveda recently and taking note of how consuming specific herbs as supplements or in your food, can really make a difference to not only the overall health of your body, but your mind and soul as well.

One such holistic brand who utilises the power of Ayurvedic herbs right here in England, are Pukka. You may be more familiar with their delicious range of herbal teas (which are readily available in most supermarkets), but their incredible selection of herbal supplements are not to be missed. They have something for everyone - from revitalising blends that help to energise you throughout the day, to digestive aids and everything in between. They're organic (Soil Association certified), free from dairy, wheat, gluten, added sugar and soya, and are suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

I've been trying out their Night Time and Womankind supplements over the past month to try to get a feel for what these herbs could do for me. Here are my thoughts!
Pukka Night Time Supplements review
Pukka Night Time supplements* (60 capsules, £13.96, link)

I suffer from a lot of stress and anxiety and I find it incredibly difficult to switch off after a long day, so it's no surprise that I have trouble sleeping. I have taken prescription medication in the past for insomnia, but the side effects were not worth it in my opinion, and I'd always wake up feeling really groggy with a terrible headache anyway. I've seen my GP about my sleep problems on numerous occasions and she's recommended various alternatives over the years with varying levels of success. When I spoke to her recently about these herbal supplements, she was very supportive (she's Indian herself and seems very knowledgeable about Ayurveda) so I decided to give them a go.

The Pukka Night Time supplements are made of a concentrated blend of Valerian root (20%), Ashwagandha root (20%), Gotu Kola leaf, Hawthorn Berry, Nutmeg fruit, Bhringaraj leaf and Fennel seed. Valerian is a popular herb that acts like a very mild sedative to calm the mind and nerves, and Ashwagandha has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years thanks to its adaptogenic properties which have been shown to lower levels of cortisol (the 'stress hormone') and thus help the body cope with stress better.

I followed the instructions on the bottle and took two capsules with a glass of water, an hour or so before bedtime. For the first fortnight, I didn't see any changes in my sleep, but in the third and fourth weeks, I noticed that I started to feel a lot more tired when my head hit the pillow. However, I've still been waking up later on and finding it difficult to get back to sleep again, but the fact that I can get a couple of hours of good sleep in before this happens is a marked improvement for me as my sleep patterns are so crazy!

I've purchased another bottle as I'm curious to see if my sleep will improve by taking these on a longer term basis. You can also take a higher dosage (up to four capsules a day), so I might try that to see if there's any difference. I'll update this post if and when I see any changes in the future.

Pukka Womankind supplements* (30 capsules, £15.45, link)

I was attracted to the Womankind supplements as I'd recently read about the many benefits of Shatavari which this blend contains.  I'm very up and down at 'that time of the month' and can experience some pretty bad PMS, so I wanted to try these to see if they would help to balance out the lesser attractive symptoms of my 'natural cycle'. Ah, the joys of being a woman!

Pukka's Womankind supplements contain an interesting and varied blend of herbs, but the key ones are Shatavari root wholistic extract (12.5%), Reishi full-spectrum, Shatavari root (10%), Tumeric root wholistic extract, Green Tea extract, Motherwort leaf extract, Maca root extract, Ginger root and Spirulina. Shatavari is the real star in here as it's such a powerful and beneficial herb in Ayurvedic medicine. It's been used to treat all sorts of 'women's problems' from reducing water weight during menstruation to helping to rebalance irritable mood swings, and it's also popular for reducing levels of stress and improving digestion.

So I followed the instructions on the bottle and took one capsule a day with a glass of water before a meal (usually at breakfast time). Like the Night Time supplements, I didn't see any differences in the first few weeks, and it was only in the last week of the month (and coincidentally when I got my period) that I saw any changes. I always get very hot and irritable during this time, which really doesn't help as my dosha type is Pitta (the hot fiery one!) so I immediately feel out of balance, but since taking these Womankind supplements, I've noticed that I feel a lot less hot and bothered around this time. My housemates have also seen this, adding that I'm less snappy and seem to be a bit more calmer than usual.

It really surprised me to see changes so quickly, and I've already purchased another two bottles as I'd like to take them daily for a few months to see if this continues. As always, I'll keep you guys posted, but so far so good with these ones!
