Review: The Vegan Kind Box - January 2014

Thursday 30 January 2014

For a long time, I'd been hoping that someone would bring out a subscription box similar to Vegan Cuts and Eco Emi here in the UK, and at last, we finally have one thanks to The Vegan Kind!

The Vegan Kind is a monthly subscription box which is available in the UK and the EU.  The boxes cost £10 per month plus postage and you can cancel at any time.  They also guarantee that the overall retail value of the products included will be more than £10, so you're always going to get your money's worth and each box will contain between 5-8 products.

What excited me the most about The Vegan Kind is that all of the products in their boxes are cruelty free and vegan.  Not only that, the boxes contain a wide variety of goods and can include anything from toiletries, cosmetics, foods, everyday household/ cleaning supplies and accessories.

TVK launched back in November, and they kindly offered me their January box to review for you all.
Everything was packaged in a thick, cardboard box and as you can see from the photo above, January's box is almost exclusively food based.  Yum!  Let's take a closer look at what you'll receive.
 Beond Organic Acai Berry Bar
(35g, £0.99)
Beond bars are very similar to the Nakd bars in terms of texture and taste.  It's organic, raw, 1 of your 5 a day, and gluten, dairy and soy free.  The Acai Berry flavour is very berry-ish (reminds me of tart raspberries), with a thick and chewy consistency.  These are great for popping in your handbag for a little pick me up when you're out and about because they're low GI, so they won't upset your blood sugar levels.

Perry Court Farm Air Dried Pear Crisps
(20g, £0.75)
I've had those vegetable crisps from the likes of Tyrells before, but I've never eaten crisps made of pears until now!  This bag is from Perry Court Farm and they tasted very sweet, had a crunch to them, but were also slightly chewy.  I was surprised to see that they're made of just pears and nothing else because they are SO sweet.  A fantastic alternative for your sugar cravings and only 67 calories / 0.1g fat per bag.

Considerit Chocolate Orange Truffle Bar
(Mini size, £2.00)
My favourite item of the whole box.  Oh my days, vegan chocolate certainly didn't taste this good when I was a teenager!  Honestly, I had to double check the ingredients just to make sure it was actually dairy-free because it tastes so good.  It's a seriously indulgent bar of chocolate.  You have this silky soft and utterly rich ganache mixed with orange oil, which is then covered in a layer of Belgian chocolate.  Just heavenly - major kudos to you Considerit!  I will be checking out their other flavours ASAP.

Clearspring Organic Dried Daikon
(40g, £2.49)
Despite being a foodie, I've never heard of Daikon before so I'm very excited to try it out.  It's Japanese White Radish which is a source of Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron and is well known in Japan as an aid in the digestion of oily foods.  You soak it for 30-45 mins, and then you can use it in stir fry dishes and soups.

Premae Skincare Plush Therapy Luxury Hand & Foot Creme
(10ml sample, £3.50)
The only beauty item in the box this month is from Premae Skincare and it's a sample size of their Hand & Foot Creme.  I haven't come across this brand before, but they specialise in allergy-free skincare and the texture of this creme is really lovely.  Definitely one I'll be popping into my travel bag.

Landgarten Organic Dark Chocolate Pumpkin Snack
(55g, £1.99)
I love pumpkin seeds as a healthy snack and what could be better than adding a little chocolate to them?!  These pumpkin seeds are exclusively grown on a small organic farm in Austria and the end product is gluten and peanut free.  They are so moreish and I could easily have eaten the whole bag in one go!
Also included in the box was a recipe card for a delicious sounding vegan Sticky Toffee Pudding which I'm definitely going to try out!  If you subscribe to TVK for three months, they give you a free ringbinder to store your recipe cards in which I think is a really nice added extra.  There was also a greetings letter inside which stated that the TVK charity of the month is Tower Hill Stables (10p from every box sold goes toward a charity which is voted for by subscribers on their Facebook page).

Summary: The Vegan Kind has filled a very important gap in the UK market, not only for those who are vegan, but for anyone who is interested in discovering new and exciting products from cruelty-free/anmal-free companies.  It offers an easy transitional step for those who are perhaps already vegetarian and wanting to go vegan, as well as people who simply have to follow certain diets or lifestyles for health and allergy reasons.  That said, I believe the TVK box will appeal to absolutely anyone who's just looking for something a bit different from all the other monthly subscription boxes around!

Have you signed up to The Vegan Kind?
What do you think of the box?

The Vegan Kind Box* is £10 per month (plus postage) and is available in the UK and EU.  All of the products are vegan and cruelty free.
