Foodie Friday: The Vegan Kind Box - Taste Test review - October 2017

Happy Friday! Last Saturday, my The Vegan Kind box for this month arrived and I couldn't wait to get stuck into the contents after seeing a couple of spoilers online - it's another good 'un!

For those of you who haven't heard of The Vegan Kind before, it's a monthly lifestyle subscription box that mainly contains food and drink, with the addition of usually one or two lifestyle or beauty products. As the name suggests, everything in the box is suitable for vegans, and although I'm not a vegan myself (I'm vegetarian), I am trying to cut back on dairy so I really enjoy receiving these boxes and seeing the new variety of vegan-friendly food and drink that's now out there. 

Here's what I found inside this month's box:-

 ALO Comfort Watermelon & Peach Drink (500ml, RRP £1.99)

Although Summer has sadly now passed us by, this ALO Watermelon & Peach Drink is wonderfully refreshing and reminds me of much sunnier days! It's very fruity and contains 15% Aloe Vera Juice and 10% Aloe Vera Pulp for a little health boost when you're on the go. Gluten-free, fat-free, no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives and it's also non-GMO Project verified - brilliant! 

 Geo Organics Chickpea and Lentil Dahl (300g, RRP £1.49)

I love chickpea and lentil curries so I was keen to try this dish from Geo Organics. It's organic, gluten-free and the plastic container is free from BPA which is something that I haven't seen regularly around from other brands. You can cook it on the hob or microwave and this portion was enough for myself and my sister to share as a tasty side dish, and tasty it was with just a hint of spice. I'd definitely buy this again to have in the cupboard for those days when you're too busy to cook from scratch.

 Retro Corn Lemon & Lime Sherbert Popcorn (35g, RRP £0.99)

Retro Corn specialises in popcorn that's coated with the flavouring of classic retro sweets, which sounds like a neat idea, but I'm not sure it's for me as I wasn't keen on these at all. The Lemon & Lime Sherbert flavour is just how you would imagine it and my housemates soon finished off the rest of the bag when I left them on the side! If this sounds like your thing, they're gluten-free and only 85 calories per bag.

 Biona Cool Cola Bottles (75g, RRP £1.79)

Being a vegetarian means that I haven't had any gelatine sweets since I was a kid at school, so I've been a fan of these gelatine-free ones from Biona since they came out. They're obviously more expensive than the likes of Haribo, but they're also organic and super moreish - I can easily eat a bag of these when I'm watching a movie at home! 

 MyProtein Chocolate Baked Cookie (75g, RRP £1.99)

Protein cookies make delicious post-workout snacks (or a healthier breakfast on the go like I often have them for), and it's great to see more brands doing them without the added whey. Instead, this Chocolate Baked Cookie from MyProtein gets its protein from Wheat and Soy and contains 13g per cookie which is pretty impressive. My main tip with these is to warm them in the microwave for a couple of seconds before eating them - it softens the cookie and makes it so much yummier. This one is really nice and chocolatey which is perfect when I want a chocolate fix.

 Eat Vive Peanut Butter Jelly Protein Bar (40g, RRP £1.95)

If you prefer a more traditional protein bar snack instead, this one from Eat Vive is absolutely delicious and has an awesome PBJ flavour with a really good texture. It's gluten, dairy and soya free, contains 10g protein and is 149 calories per bar, so ideal if you want a healthier mid-afternoon snack or post-gym treat. This brand is a fab new discovery for me and I love the simple ingredients which include Dates, Peanuts (21%), Pea Protein (20%) and Coconut Nectar.

Harper's Candles Little Black Cat Soy Wax Candle (RRP £5)

The last product is a beautifully scented candle from Harper's Candles who are a regular feature in The Vegan Kind's boxes, and one that I'm always happy to see in there. This Halloween exclusive Little Black Cat scent is sweet and uplifting, perfect for this time of the year and burns cleanly as it's handmade from soy wax. Gorgeous!

Also in the box: This month's recipe card is for Cashew Udon Noodles (sounds good!) and October's chosen charity is the Tower Hills Stables Animal Sanctuary, who provide a forever home for over 400 animals including dogs, cats and horses. They're currently fundraising for more accommodation so they can help rescue chickens, so check out their website here for more info.

Foodie Friday: The Vegan Kind Box - Taste Test review - September 2017 #TVK47

Earlier this week, this month's The Vegan Kind box arrived and although it was a little squashed, most of the products had survived the rough handling! 

The Vegan Kind is a monthly subscription box and whilst it mainly contains food, there's usually some kind of 'lifestyle' product also included. I've been subscribed to them for over a year and always look forward to the boxes arriving - it's a lovely treat and a great way to find new vegan-friendly, dairy-free, and often gluten-free goodies.

Here's what I found inside September's box:-

 Lenny and Larry White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookie (113g, RRP £2.50)

These enormous protein cookies from Lenny and Larry are hugely popular (I see them on Instagram all the time!). Their White Chocolate and Macadamia Nut flavour is brand new to the UK, and this flavour combo is amazing! Each cookie contains 8g of fibre and 16g of protein, so it's ideal as a post-workout treat. They taste a bit like cake and I highly recommend warming them up for a few seconds in the microwave first, for a deliciously indulgent, warm, sweet dessert! Free from dairy, soy, eggs, GMOs, trans fats and artificial sweeteners.

 Livia's Kitchen Salted Maca Caramel Biccy Boms (40g, RRP £1.79)

Biccy Boms are another new sweet treat that has launched onto the market recently and they're made by Livia's Kitchen. You get two of them in a pack and they're kind of like a small crumbly biscuit covered in a raw cacao coating, with a sweet salted maca date centre. My pack got squashed during transit but they still tasted good!

 Pop Chips Sea Salt and Black Pepper (23g, RRP £0.85)

I try not to eat too many crisps but when I do, I tend to opt for the healthier options like Pop Chips, so I've had these many times before. They're 'popped' not fried, so they still have a good crunch to them, and this Sea Salt and Black Pepper flavour goes well with any kind of sandwich or soup to liven up a simple lunch. 

 Greenfrog Botanic Natural Bodywash in Relaxing Geranium & Peppermint (100ml, RRP £3.95)

This month's lifestyle product is an all-natural body wash from Greenfrog Botanic in a generous travel size tube. It's made from 100% plant-based ingredients, is free from parabens and sulphates, and contains organic Soapberries which are moisturising and gentle to the pH balance of your skin, so it's kind to sensitive and eczema prone skin. I love the scent of this which is really refreshing and I can see why it's won awards!

 Cheeky P's Curry Flavour Roasted Chickpeas (52g, RRP £1.30)

Cheeky P's are another new product launch and these are so moreish! I love anything curry flavoured and these roasted chickpeas taste so good! Each pack contains 10g of protein and they're also high in fibre, making them a healthy snack to reach for when you want something savoury and crunchy to nibble on. I'll have to keep an eye out for more of these!

 Beloved Date Nectar (340g, RRP £3)

My kitchen cupboard is full of natural sweeteners that I use when I'm baking, but I've been missing a bottle of Date Nectar for a while now, so it's great to have it back in my life with this one from Beloved. Made from just 100% dates (sourced from local community farmers in Oman, not Israel - yay!), you can use this as you would any other sweetener; drizzled over porridge, in tea or coffee, and of course in baking and cooking, etc. A little goes a long way too. 

Revolution Foods Protein Sample (31g)

The last product is a sample of Revolution Foods' Premium Plant Protein which is blended with a superfood formula to give you an extra boost of energy. It contains 22g of protein and this sample pack makes one protein shake. I got the Wild Berry flavour which was really nice and filled me up until lunchtime!

Also in the box: This month's recipe card is for Hazelnut & Coconut Bliss Balls (yum!) and September's chosen charity is Animals Asia who rescues and rehabilitates bears and other captive animals from across countries such as China and Vietnam.

Foodie Friday: The Vegan Kind Box - Taste Test Review - August 2017 #TVK46

Happy Friday! This month's The Vegan Kind box arrived earlier this week, so it's time for me to do another taste test review!

August's The Vegan Kind box is one of my favourite boxes from them so far this year and it may be because I've been craving a lot of sweet stuff at the moment. Inside the box, I found six vegan food and drink products and a natural beauty product - all of which are new to me so I was very excited to try everything out.

If you're new to The Vegan Kind, they're a monthly subscription box that features a mix of vegan-friendly food, drinks, snacks, beauty and lifestyle products. I'm not 100% vegan myself, but as a vegetarian, these boxes have really been helping me to discover different brands and products. I've been subscribed to them for over a year now and they never disappoint! Check out my previous reviews here. 

Here's what I found inside this month's box:-

 Sweet Freedom Choc Pot (250g, RRP £3.85)

Hello gorgeous! I'm a massive fan of Sweet Freedom's delicious Choc Shot which I like to drizzle onto pancakes and porridge, so this new Choc Pot is something that I'm welcoming into my life with open arms! The main selling point of this is that it's made from a blend of Natural Fruit extracts, Carob, Cocoa and a little Rapeseed Oil, so it's 75% less fat and half the calories of a normal chocolate spread (it's only 14 calories per teaspoon). 

It's also free from Palm Oil and free from Dairy, Gluten, GMOs, and Nuts. It tastes pretty much the same as their regular Choc Shot, only with a much thicker texture, so it's great to have in your cupboard for when you want a cheeky chocolate fix! Spread it on toast, rice cakes, crumpets, use it to fill crepes or pancakes, or enjoy it straight from the pot - I won't judge you ;)

 Almighty Foods Strawberry Blonde Raw Chocolate Bar (40g, RRP £2.89)

I'm always excited to try new raw chocolate bars and this one from Almighty Foods is so different to anything that I've tried before. It's made from a base of Cacao Butter, Coconut Nectar, Dried Coconut Flesh, Cashews, Tigernut and Hibiscus Flower, and features a sprinkling of dried Strawberries on the top. It's lovely and creamy in taste and texture, but it has a surprisingly sour tang to it which I really like! This is a massive bar and because it's so rich, it's definitely something that can be shared or saved for later.

 Emily Crisps Crunchy Sweet Potato, Beetroot & Carrot Crisps (23g, RRP £1.50)

If there was ever an award for the most beautiful packaging on a bag of crisps, Emily Crisps would win hands down. These vegetable crisps are satisfyingly crunchy and I love the mix of flavours from the Sweet Potato, Carrot and Beetroot. At only 95 calories per bag, these are a guilt-free snack that you can have at any time of the day and a great swap for normal crisps if you're looking for a healthier alternative. I'd definitely buy these again!

 Native Unearthed Activated Charcoal Deodorant Balm (30ml, RRP £3.99)

I've been using natural deodorants on and off for years now and I'm curious to see how this one from Native Unearthed works as it contains a blend of Activated Charcoal, Coconut Oil, Arrowroot, Whipped Shea Butter and Lavender Oil. The Charcoal is made from the shell of Coconuts (interesting!) which has natural absorbing properties to keep you feeling fresh and dry all day. To use it, you just scoop out a pea sized amount and rub it into your pits - sounds easy enough! Keep an eye out for a future Empties post to see how I get on with it.

 Candy Kittens Sweet Peach Pop Bag (52g, RRP £1)

Candy Kittens are a serious weakness of mine and if you're a fan of chewy, fizzy/sour sweets, you need to try them pronto! The brand are currently working on making their whole range of sweets suitable for vegans which is amazing news, but for the time being, they have a couple of vegan-friendly flavours available. These Sweet Peach ones are so, so, SO good - really fruity with just the right amount of sour - yum! The only problem is that this bag is just too small!

 PHD Superfood Mango and Banana Protein Smoothie (RRP £2.49)

I was happy to see this product in the box as there are so many plant based protein products popping up in the supermarkets and on my Instagram feed recently, but I haven't really explored them properly for myself yet. This is a brand new product release from PHD and features a Mango & Banana smoothie in a handy, squeezy pouch. It contains a whopping 20g of plant protein, so it's ideal as a pre or post-workout treat. I loved the flavour of this - it's really fruity and creamy thanks to the added Coconut Milk, and this is something that I would happily pick up again.

We Are Tea Super Berry (1 teabag sample)

The last product is a whole-leaf tea bag sample from We Are Tea, whose teas are currently in my heavily stocked tea cupboard. I haven't tried this flavour before though, so I had it with my breakfast this morning and it was really good! Fruit teas can all too often be disappointing, but this one packs in a lot of fruity/berry flavour and there are some lovely bits of Hibiscus, Apple and Orange in this blend.

Also in the box: This month's recipe card is for a Chocolate Orange Cheesecake which I'm dying to try out, and August's chosen charity is Food Fight UK - a Glasgow based, not for profit, volunteer led service that offers free, healthy and filling vegan meals and snacks to homeless people in Scotland - a worthy cause indeed.

Foodie Friday: The Vegan Kind - July 2017 review #TVK45

Last week, July's The Vegan Kind box arrived and I've been steadily munching my way through the contents. As always, it didn't disappoint with lots of new foodie products to try out.

This month's The Vegan Kind Box boasts eight products which are mostly snack related, and there have been one or two things which have surprised me this time around. Like their previous boxes that I've reviewed (check those out here), this one contains another good mix of sweet and savoury treats, so let's take a closer look at what's inside.

The Foods of Athenry Belgian Chocolate Biscuit Rocky Road Bar (RRP £1.50)

The popular family-run Irish bakery returns with a brand new creation and TVK subscribers get to be the first to try it in the UK - awesome! This thick and chocolatey bar is a proper indulgent treat and features a yummy blend of caramel, crunchy biscuit, dark Belgian chocolate and sweet marshmallow pieces. Absolutely delicious - you wouldn't even notice that it's gluten, wheat, dairy and egg free unless I told you!

Jealous Sweets Grizzly Bears (RRP £1.50)

It can be hard finding gummy sweets that are gelatine-free, whether you're a vegetarian or a vegan, but these ones from Jealous Sweets are amazing. They have a really great texture and are packed full of natural fruity flavours. Much nicer than Haribo!

Bute Island Creamy Cheddar Sheese (RRP £2.30)

The Vegan Kind included a spreadable ambient cream 'cheese' from Bute Island in their May box (reviewed here), which I enjoyed trying but it wasn't something that I would buy again. So when I saw this Creamy Cheddar Sheese in this month's box, I wasn't expecting to like it that much, but surprisingly, it's pretty good! I like it a lot more than the other cream cheese flavour, and although it's got a similar soy/coconut oil based texture, it's the strong, realistic cheddar cheese flavour that really sets it apart. I like it spread onto a slice of warm sourdough with some cucumber slices on the top for an easy afternoon snack. 

Free From Italy Chocolate Cream Filled Organic Croissant (RRP £1.10)

A vegan croissant?! This got had a little squashed during transit, but I couldn't wait to try it. It's made by a new free from food line in Italy and this croissant is sweetened with Agave Nectar and filled with a dairy-free chocolate cream. It was obviously not as melt-in-your-mouth buttery as a normal croissant is, but the flaky pastry texture was good, if a little dry. The chocolate cream filling was great though, but there needed to be more of it as it was pretty much just in the centre and would have been a million times tastier if it was throughout the whole croissant!

The Feel Good Drinks Co Refreshingly Still Orange, Mango and Water Drink (RRP £1.20)

I love the Feel Good Drinks and have purchased this flavour many times when I've been out and about. Wonderfully fruity and refreshing, especially on a hot summer's day.

VITL Essentials Vegan Vitamin One Day Trial + 2 Week Free Trial Code (RRP £1.30)

I'm a strong believer in taking supplements every day, alongside a healthy diet, to make sure that you have all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs, so I was pleased to see this pack of supplements from VITL Essentials. This one day trial pack contains Multivitamin, Omega 3, CoQ10 and Supergreens capsules to cover all bases, and there's also a 2-week free trial code (2WKSFREE) included which I'll definitely be taking advantage of shortly.

Super Moons Cheese and Onion Lentil Puffs (RRP £0.75)

Super Moons are another brand new product and they're made by the same people who are behind Hectares Sweet Potato Crisps (which are amazing by the way!). This time, they're using lentils to create these tiny puff balls that are flavoured with cheese and onion, for a moreish savoury snack. At only 83 calories per bag, I'll certainly be buying these again! 

Ape Crunchy Coconut Bites with Sesame Seeds (RRP £1.60)

The last snack that I devoured from this month's box were these delicious little coconutty bites from Ape Snacks. They're really good and crunchy, with a subtle sweetness, and they're also baked, not fried. All natural, gluten and dairy free, these are well worth looking out for during your next grocery shop.

Also in the box: This month's recipe card is for a Courgette and Butternut Squash Rose Tart, courtesy of The Tofu Diaries, and July's chosen charity is The New Arc who are a North East Wildlife and Animal Rescue Centre. They specialise in rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife, but also rescue domestic animals who are in need as well. The New Arc are hoping to start construction on a new animal hospital as they are currently at capacity, so check out their website here and donate to them if you can via their Just Giving page here.

Foodie Friday: The Vegan Kind Box - June 2017 review #TVK44

After such a crazy week in the UK, I was happy to get my hands on this month's The Vegan Kind box which arrived a couple of days ago. It's a good 'un!

June's The Vegan Kind box contains six products, five of which are food and drink, and one that's a home/lifestyle item. I always love the interesting mix of treats that you get in these boxes and if you fancy checking out my past reviews of TVK, just click here.

So then, let's jump into this month's box shall we?

 Harper's Candles The Great British Summer Kind Candle (RRP £5)

I love these tin candles from Harper's Candles, and was thrilled to receive another limited edition scent that they have created just for TVK subscribers. This one's called The Great British Summer Kind and it smells so lovely and fresh with a clean, cut grass and slightly floral scent. Made from 100% soy wax, these candles have an impressive scent throw for their size and I can't wait to use it.

 Goupie Salted Sticky Toffee (80g, RRP £2.50)

Anyone who knows me will know that I adore anything that's a salted caramel flavour, so I was curious to try this Salty Sticky Toffee from Goupie. Hand-made in Kent to a 50-year-old family recipe, these triangular pieces of heaven are completely different to what I imagined them to be as they're soft, a little chewy, a little crunchy and covered in dark chocolate with a good sprinkling of Maldon Sea Salt. Super moreish, it's hard not to eat more than one piece at a time!  

 Metcalfe's Sweet 'n' Salt Skinny Popcorn (25g, RRP £0.85)

Now this is a familiar snack in my household as I regularly buy bags of Metcalfe popcorn as a healthier snack alternative to crisps. Sweet 'n' Salt is my favourite flavour that they do because you get the best of both worlds - sweet and salty of course! These smaller bags are great for portion control and are only 115 calories per bag.

 Bounce VLife High Protein Energy Ball in Almond Kale (40g, RRP £1.79)

Bounce balls are perfect to have in your bag for a post-gym/post workout snack and this is one of their new vegan-friendly flavours, Almond Kale. It contains 9g of plant based protein, is gluten-free and high in fibre, so it's an ideal nutrient-dense snack to help keep your energy levels up during a busy day. This flavour is really good and I'd definitely buy it again - though I'm likely to wait until it's on offer in Holland & Barrett as you can usually pick these up for half price or in the penny sale.

 Chewsy Chewing Gum in Lemon (18g, RRP £1.49)

I've never tried a lemon flavoured chewing gum before, but these are actually quite nice and refreshing! The flavour doesn't last very long though, but I do like the fact that they're 100% natural and sugar free. Curious to see what the minty flavours are like.

Sunsoul Raspberry & Elderflower 100% Natural Energy Drink (250ml, £1.30)

I haven't heard of this brand before, but Sunsoul make 100% natural energy drinks and as someone who quit drinking Redbull years ago, these definitely appeal to me. I received the Raspberry & Elderflower flavour which was absolutely delicious - really fruity and it definitely gave me a boost when I stayed up to watch the election results last night!

Also in the box was this month's recipe card for some yummy looking Pizza Bun Swirls, and June's chosen charity is Hart Wildlife Rescue, who provide a rescue, treatment and rehabilitation service for local wildlife in the North East Hampshire area.

Foodie Friday: The Vegan Kind Box - May 2017 review #TVK43

Earlier this week, this month's The Vegan Kind box arrived on my doorstep and I've been so busy lately that I completely forgot that it was due! Needless to say, it cheered me up instantly and I couldn't wait to see what was inside.

I've been subscribed to TVK for well over a year now and I still get excited when I open them up! You can check out my previous box reviews here. May's edition of The Vegan Kind box is another great mix of cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, food and lifestyle treats and contains seven products this time around. 

 Organica Hazelnut Nougat Delight Bar (40g, RRP £0.99)

I was in the mood for something sweet when the box arrived, so naturally, the first thing that caught my eye was this chocolate bar from Organica. I haven't heard of this brand before, but they're certified vegan and also only use organic ingredients (Soil Association certified) in their products. This chocolate bar is like the missing link between a Mars and a Snickers - it's chewy, sweet, covered in dark chocolate and has a delicious hazelnut nougat filling. I'll definitely be buying some more of these in the near future!

 Humble Brush Bamboo Toothbrush (RRP £3.99)

Back in March I featured a bamboo toothbrush in my Monthly Favourites post (you can check it out here if you missed it), so I'm pleased to see that the word is getting out about these fantastic eco-friendly alternatives to plastic toothbrushes. This one's from a Swedish brand called Humble and the handle is made from 100% biodegradable bamboo so it won't clog up landfills or add to the growing problem that is plastic pollution. On top of all that, for each Humble toothbrush that's bought, the brand will donate one to a child in need via the not-for-profit organisation, the Humble Smile Foundation, who work with children around the world who don't have access to basic oral health care.

 Hippeas Cheese & Love Organic Chickpea Puffs (22g, RRP £0.99)

Hippeas are crazy addictive and provide a healthier snack alternative to mainstream crisps as they're made from organic chickpeas and rice. They're really crunchy, totally satisfying and loaded with flavour - especially these ones which are incredibly cheesy! Suitable for vegans, they're also gluten-free, high in fibre, contain no trans fats or MSG, and offer a source of protein. At only 90 calories a bag, they're virtually a guilt-free snack to have alongside your lunchtime sandwich - yum!

 Terra Vegane Egg Free Omelett Mix (250g, RRP £4.00)

Last year, The Vegan Kind gave us the popular Vegan Egg from Follow Your Heart (which is great by the way, especially in baking!), and now they're introducing us to the another egg-free product, but this time it's from German brand, Terra Vegane. I've tried a couple of products from Terra Vegane in the past and enjoyed all of those, so I'm looking forward to trying out this Egg Free Omelett Mix which is made from potato starch and chickpea flour.

 Bute Island Creamy Original Sheese (225g, RRP £2.30)

Although I'm not a vegan, I am trying to cut back on the amount of dairy that I consume, but cheese is something that I've been finding incredibly difficult to give up. I've tried a lot of dairy-free and vegan cheese alternatives from various brands, but I've yet to find one that I actually like, and sadly this Sheese from Bute Island hasn't helped to change my mind. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely one of the better dairy-free cream cheese alternatives that I've tried, but it still doesn't give me that Philadelphia fix that I'm after. If you know of a vegan cheese that tastes like Philadelphia, please let me know!

 Angelic Gluten Free Cocktail Oatcakes (150g, RRP £2.60)

These mini oatcakes from Scottish brand Angelic are free from gluten, wheat, dairy, nuts and eggs, making them the perfect choice for many people who have food allergies or intolerances. I don't eat oatcakes often, but these are really good with a great texture that works well with lots of other ingredients like cheese, jam and nut butters. You get a generous amount in the packet and I've been slowly munching my way through them all week!

Vita Coco Coconut Oil (5ml sample sachet)

The last item in this month's box is a product that I know and love, in fact I already have two jars of it in my kitchen! It's Vita Coco Coconut Oil which is just pure and simple extra virgin, organic, 100% raw and cold pressed coconut oil, with nothing else added to it. I use coconut oil for so many different things (check out my top 10 Ways To Use Coconut Oil post here), and I think I'll be popping this little sample into my travel bag.
