Health & Lifestyle: Fount Drinks review

Tuesday, 17 January 2023

If you struggle to drink enough water throughout the day, Fount Drinks could be the solution you've been looking for. Whether you simply don't like the taste of plain water or want a health boost to keep you going throughout the day, Fount Drinks has something for everyone.

We all know that we should be drinking more water for optimum health, but the reality is usually very different and it's not always easy when you're rushing around with a busy schedule.

Fount understands that modern life can be exhausting at times, so they have developed a range of drinks to help improve how you feel. Bursting with carefully chosen botanicals, vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, these all-natural drinks are free from added sugar, sweeteners, artificial flavours, colours, and preservatives.

Developed and made in the UK, Fount encourages you to drink more water by viewing each glass as an opportunity to add beneficial ingredients to your daily diet in a simple and convenient way. In fact, the 50ml bottles are perfect for popping into your handbag or desk drawer so you can always have one with you to add to a glass or bottle of water, wherever you are.

How To Use
Simply shake the bottle and add 2ml (about three and a half pipette fulls) to 250ml of still, sparkling or hot water. You can add a little more or less to adjust to your own taste. Each 50ml bottle provides 25 servings.

What Do They Taste Like
Each drink has its own unique flavour, but on average, they taste very much like a diluted herbal or fruit tea to me.

There are currently four different drinks to try in the Fount range and I've been enjoying testing them out over the past month or so.

Fount Refresh & Revitalise Raspberry & Green Tea
This is the one to pick up if you need an energy boost! With extracts of Green Tea, Raspberry, Panax Ginseng, Manganese, Vitamin B Complex, and Vitamin C, this drink is ideal to consume first thing in the morning to give you the energy that you need to start your day off on the right foot. I've also found it useful to have a glass around 3pm to stave off that afternoon slump so you can get your to-do list done.

Fount Stress Relief Apple & Elderflower
Pretty self-explanatory as Stress Relief does what it says on the label. Featuring Granny Smith Apple, Elderflower, Ashwagandha, L-Theanine, Zinc, Vitamin B Complex and Vitamin C, this fruity drink helps to support the nervous system and reduces the symptoms of mild stress and anxiety.

Fount Cleanse & Detox Ginger & Lemon
Always a popular choice in the New Year, you can't beat the natural cleansing properties of good old Ginger and Lemon. With added extracts of Dandelion, Selenium, Vitamin B Complex and Vitamin C, Cleanse & Detox is also brilliant as a digestive aid if you've overindulged at the weekend.

Fount Heart Health Red Berries & Hibiscus
Looking after your heart may not be at the top of your health priorities when you're in your 20s or 30s, but it's never too early to start looking after the body's most important organ. This drink combines a blend of Hibiscus, Pomegranate, Red Currants, Raspberries, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Vitamin D3, Vitamin C and Vitamin B Complex, to support the healthy function of the heart, muscles and blood.

Fount Drinks (50ml, £12 each) are available from fountdrinks.com

Foodie Friday: Chocolate with Health Benefits from The Wizards Magic

Friday, 3 June 2022

The Wizards Magic chocolate review
Chocolate, glorious, chocolate! Who doesn't love indulging in a bar of chocolate? Well, how about if that bar of chocolate had health benefits? Yes, really! The Wizards Magic have just done that and waved their magic wands over their amazing bars of yummy chocolate!

Based in York, England, The Wizards Magic has created a scrumptious chocolate bar brand with a difference. Their USP is that their chocolate has superpowers; well, OK, not exactly superpowers per se, but certain health benefits that one might not be accustomed to finding in a bar of regular chocolate.

At the heart of their business is a core of ethical sourcing that works with the Cocoa Horizons Foundation to ensure that West African cocoa farmers are protected and supported financially and within their communities. The cocoa beans are then shipped off to Belgium to be crafted into some of the finest bars by expert chocolatiers.

But back to the magical health benefits...

The Wizards Magic chocolate review

The Wizards Magic has a range of clinically approved chocolate bars that helps to boost immunity, thanks to the addition of carefully chosen essential oils and superfoods such as Vitamin K2, Vitamin D3, and Coenzyme Q10

Ever curious, I tried two of these bars in the Orange and Caramel flavours; both of which tasted like luxury, high quality milk chocolate. There's definitely a subtle 'tang' to them which I assume is the added vitamins etc, but it doesn't distract from the smooth milkiness of the chocolate which melts in your mouth, and I particularly enjoyed the Caramel flavour which was decadently rich and almost truffle-like.
The Wizards Magic chocolate review
In addition to the Immunity chocolates, The Wizards Magic has chocolate infused with other superfoods like CBD, Lions Mane, Manuka Honey, Wolf Berry and more.

Dairy-free or vegan? There are some excellent plant-based, dairy-free chocolates available too such as the Orange flavour above (these are packaged in green card to help customers distinguish them from the rest of the range), however, I must point out that these sadly lack the added health benefits. That said, they are some of the best vegan chocolate that I've tried with a base of silky smooth rice milk and a velvety texture.

Health & Lifestyle: 4 Vegan-Friendly Supplements To Try This Summer

Health & Lifestyle: 4 Vegan Supplements To Try This Summer
Get your health back on track after lockdown with these four vegan-friendly supplements which are all super easy to incorporate into your daily routine.

Vitashine Vegan Vitamin D3 Tablets & Oral Spray
For The All Important Vitamin D3 - Vegetology Vitashine Vegan Vitamin D3 Tablets & Oral Spray* (prices from £8.95, link)

With overseas holidays being off the cards for many people this year, taking a Vitamin D supplement has become more important than ever, especially for those who are choosing to limit their outdoor exposure due to Coronavirus, whether through shielding due to a health risk or simply personal choice. The debate continues as to which Vitamin D is better absorbed by the body (D2 or D3), however, there is growing evidence to suggest that D3 is the one to go for, and when I asked my GP about it, she also recommended D3 as it currently has the most positive scientific trials and research available. Vitamin D is essential for a healthy immune system, maintaining healthy muscles, bones and teeth, and has been shown to improve overall brain health including regulating mood and maintaining healthy cognitive functions.

Typically, Vitamin D3 is derived from Lanolin (aka sheep's wool grease), however, if you're looking for a vegan-friendly alternative, Vegetology's Vitashine range is perfect. Certified by both the Vegan Society and the Vegetarian Society, Vitashine's Vitamin D3 comes exclusively from Cholecalciferol, a carefully selected strain derived from the organic plant source Lichen.

Available in either small chewable tablets or a convenient oral spray format, these supplements are gluten-free, packaged in 100% biodegradable sugarcane-based containers, and should be taken just after a meal to ensure optimum absorption. They're currently on a 3 for 2 offer on Vegetology's website so it's a great time to stock up!

Floradix Vitamin B Complex Liquid Formula
For Busy Lifestyles: Floradix Vitamin B Complex Liquid Formula (250ml, £13.50, link)

Most vegans that I know routinely take a Vitamin B12 supplement as it's difficult to get the daily requirement from a plant-based diet alone, and if you have a particularly busy lifestyle, you might want to consider a B Complex formula instead to give yourself a real boost. These hard-working vitamins are essential for a healthy metabolism, immune and nervous system, regulating energy levels, combatting fatigue, maintaining normal red blood cell formation and keeping your heart and brain healthy. For beauty fans, Niacin (B3) and Biotin (B7) are particularly important for healthy skin, hair and nails.

I'm a big fan of Floradix's liquid formulas as they're made without any alcohol, preservatives, colourings or artificial flavourings, plus they're also free from lactose, yeast and gluten so a lot of people with allergies or different dietary requirements can happily consume them. Their Vitamin B Complex is suitable for vegans and each 20ml daily adult serving provides 100% NRV of Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B7 and B12. This liquid has a fruity-herbal taste and should be stored in the fridge after opening. If you like it, I highly recommend Floradix's Liquid Iron and Liquid Magnesium formulas too - they're all in the current 3 for 2 supplements offer at Boots.

Highkind 5% CBD Liquid Drops in Tranquil
For Sleep Problems & Anxiety: Highkind 5% CBD Liquid Drops in Tranquil* (10ml, £27.99, link)

I'm so pleased that my recent Sleep Series has been such a big hit with my readers - it has been an absolute pleasure to be able to respond to so many emails and messages regarding sleep issues and sharing ways that we can all try and get a better night's sleep. As it's something that so many people struggle with, I'll continue to feature and review products which I think may help in future posts and I couldn't resist including these amazing CBD Liquid Drops in Tranquil from Highkind.

I've personally found CBD Oil to be beneficial as a long-term supplement and I was intrigued to try this as it's a specific nighttime product. Made from 100% natural ingredients, it includes CO2 extracted broad-spectrum Hemp extract, MCT Oil and a blend of Botanical Terpenes to help promote a good night's sleep. I generally take around 10 drops an hour or so before I want to go to sleep and have found that it helps me to drift off faster, as well as reducing some of the minor feelings of anxiety and restlessness that I can experience towards the end of the day. It's free from artificial flavours, colours, preservatives, lactose, yeast and gluten. You can check out their full range on their website above.

Disclaimer: I am not a GP or a medical professional - my reviews of supplements demonstrate what has worked for me, but they may not work for you. Please see your GP if you have any health concerns or want further advice on any of these supplements before you take them.

Health & Lifestyle: Blooming Blends - Immunity Botanical Tincture Blend & Protection Sensory Facial Mist review

Blooming Blends - Immunity Botanical Tincture Blend & Protection Sensory Facial Mist review
Give your immune system a natural boost and enjoy a moment of protective calm with these two botanical remedies from Blooming Blends

Founded by Fleur Sladen, a former cook who was working long hours in a busy kitchen, Blooming Blends was born when she was looking for something natural to help give her mind and body an energy boost. Other than being natural and plant-based, there were two other important criteria to tick off; products that were both effective and easy to use, so Fleur decided to make her own unique range of botanical boosting blends, experimenting with different formulas to help balance and strengthen the mind, the body and the soul.

Being a firm believer in holistic wellness, Blooming Blends immediately struck a chord with me when I was introduced to their website and I was kindly given the opportunity to try two of their products. From their range, which currently includes Botanical Tinctures, Booster Blends and Sensory Mists to help a variety of modern lifestyle ailments such as stress, fatigue, mood, digestion, poor sleep etc, I decided to choose their Immunity Botanical Tincture Blend and the Protection Sensory Facial Mist to test out.

All of Blooming Blends products are handmade in small batches in Cheltenham, England, using traditional methods and 100% natural herbal ingredients. The botanicals are carefully sourced from sustainable suppliers and everything is packaged in dark glass to protect the botanical actives.

Blooming Blends - Immunity Botanical Tincture Blend review
Blooming Blends Immunity Botanical Tincture Boosting Tincture Blend* (30ml, £22, link)

Even before the Coronavirus pandemic took hold of the world, I've regularly used immunity-boosting products to try to strengthen and protect my overall health. Admittedly, this isn't always easy when you have an autoimmune illness, but I do find that they help and I always notice a difference when I don't keep on top of the various natural blends and supplements that I take on a regular basis. Unsurprisingly then, the Blooming Blends Immunity Botanical Boosting Tincture Blend naturally jumped out at me when I was browsing their website and within a week of it arriving, I began taking it every day to help ward off any potential colds that often come about with the change of season.

This Immunity Blend has been specially formulated to do just that, keeping lurgies and sniffles at bay thanks to a mix of three of the most beneficial botanicals that Mother Nature has to offer; Elderberry, Echinacea and Lemon Balm. These are blended into an alcohol-free tincture with an extract ratio of 1.3-1.1 herb to liquid and you can take 1/2 a pipette up to four times a day (each bottle contains 45 servings).

It's worth noting that this won't protect against Coronavirus or any strain of Flu, but it will help to boost your immune system against the Common Cold, so if you're someone who often gets every cold going around, it may well be worth investing in for your natural medicine cabinet at home.

Blooming Blends - Protection Sensory Facial Mist review
Blooming Blends Botanical Protection Sensory Mist* (50ml, £18, link)

Like the Tincture Blends, Blooming Blends' range of Botanical Sensory Mists help to address many of life's concerns and this Protection blend is an interesting one for anyone who wants to be shielded against negative energies. Created from a balancing formula of homemade floral waters including Cedarwood and Geranium Rose, Protection also contains oils of Frankincense, Clary Sage, Witch Hazel and Juniper Berry, the latter of which has been traditionally used by herbalists to protect them against dark and negative forces.

If the overall concept is a little too 'out there' for you, you can still enjoy the wonderfully soothing, refreshing and instantly calming benefits of the essential oils in this blend and spritz whenever you need a reviving boost for your skin and your mind.

Foodie Friday: Warming Ginger & Garlic Veggie Broth with Quorn Chicken (Vegetarian recipe)

Warming Ginger & Garlic Veggie Broth with Quorn Chicken (Vegetarian recipe)
Blast away those cold and wet Autumnal blues with this delicious Warming Ginger & Garlic Veggie Broth, topped with seasonal organic vegetables and vegetarian-friendly Quorn Chicken pieces for added protein.

Autumn is officially here and whilst many of you are rejoicing over the annual re-appearance of Pumpkin Spice everything and digging out your favourite jumpers from the back of your wardrobes, I'm begrudgingly putting away my flip-flops and mourning the end of Summer :(

But it's not all doom and gloom! Whilst I personally despise the longer, darker, colder months of the British year (can you tell that I'm a Summer gal through and through?!), I do enjoy indulging in all of the simple comfort foods that help to warm your belly up, such as this oh-so-delicious bowl of Warming Ginger & Garlic Veggie Broth with Quorn Chicken pieces.

Ginger and Garlic are both fantastic ingredients for helping to boost your immune system which is vital at this time of the year when cold and flu season kicks in, but the real key player in this recipe is a good quality vegetable stock to use as the base for your broth. If you are absolutely pressed for time, you could use a ready-made stock, but trust me, it won't be as flavourful so save this one for when you're not in a rush.

Yyou can use any type of vegetarian or vegan chicken pieces here (this post isn't sponsored by Quorn, I just personally like them!) and I've added them for protein, however, you can leave them out or use pieces of Tofu instead if you'd prefer. This meal is perfect for a light lunch or even as a late-night healthy snack if you're feeling peckish before bedtime.

Ingredients (serves 1)
  • 300ml of Vegetable Stock (I often use this BBC Food recipe here)
  • 1 large clove of Garlic, peeled and finely chopped
  • 1 thumb-size of fresh Ginger, peeled and finely grated
  • Handful of seasonal vegetables (I've used Kale, Carrot and Courgette)
  • Handful of Quorn Chicken pieces or other chicken/protein alternative
  • Drizzle of Olive Oil
  • Pinch of Salt & Pepper
  • Tamari & squeeze of fresh Lemon Juice (optional)

Method
  • If you're using veggies such as Carrots, peel and chop them first, and then add to a pan of boiling water to simmer for around 15 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  • In a saucepan, add the Vegetable Stock, Garlic, Ginger, Salt, Pepper, and any other 'quick-cook' veggies that you want to use such as Courgette and Kale. Slowly bring to the boil and then reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes with a lid on. Towards the end, add in the cooked Carrots if using and give it a stir before replacing the lid.
  • Whilst the broth is simmering, in a frying pan, add the Olive Oil and let it heat up before adding the Quorn Chicken pieces. Fry the pieces for 7-10 minutes.
  • Now all you need to do is assemble your meal - pour the Veggie Broth into a bowl and top with the cooked Quorn Chicken pieces. Season with a splash of Tamari and freshly squeezed Lemon Juice if desired for even more flavour - enjoy!

What are your favourite warming dishes for Autumn?

Health & Lifestyle: Viridian Aronia & Cacao Frappé review #WellnessWednesday

Wednesday, 6 March 2019

Viridian Aronia & Cacao Frappé review
If you're on the lookout for a healthy way to start your day, why not try swapping your coffee for Viridian's new Aronia & Cacao Frappé? The latest launch from the ethical supplements brand, this vegan-friendly drink is easy to prepare, and full of immune-boosting and fatigue-fighting benefits.

What is it?
Viridian's Aronia & Cacao Frappé is a nutritional supplement that comes in a powder format, which is packaged in a recyclable/reusable glass jar. It contains just two ingredients; Aronia Berry and Raw Cacao, so it's suitable for vegans and is free from gluten, wheat, lactose, dairy, soy, added sugar, salt, yeast, preservatives and artificial colourings. Each jar contains 25 servings and each serving gives you 695mg of Raw Cacao (providing 200mg of flavanols), and 505mg of Aronia Berry (providing 200mg of polyphenols)

Viridian Aronia & Cacao Frappé review
What are the benefits?
Aronia Berry is a less familiar superfood than other berries here in the West, but it's been popular with the Native Americans for centuries, and the Mayans were a fan of them too. More commonly known as the Chokeberry or Wild Gooseberry, Aronia berries are native to North America and have a really vivid, dark purple colour which gives the berries their high anthocyanin and antioxidant properties. Rich in Vitamins B, C, K and minerals such as Zinc, Magnesium and Iron, they help to boost the immune system, protect your vital organs (especially the heart, liver and stomach), and research is currently being carried out on their abilities to reduce blood pressure, regulate blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation in the body.

Anyone who is a 'healthy' chocoholic will already know why Raw Cacao is amazing, but to recap, it's the unfermented, non-heat treated form of the cacao seed so it retains all of its wonderful nutrients. Packed full of flavonoids, catechin and epicatechin, Raw Cacao also boasts a high level of antioxidants which protect against cell and tissue damage, and is high in Magnesium, Iron and Calcium.

Viridian Aronia & Cacao Frappé review
How do I use it?
To make an Aronia & Cacao Frappé, simply add half a teaspoon to a glass of cold milk or dairy-free milk alternative of your choice. Give it a good stir and enjoy! You can use a frother if you're feeling fancy for an even more indulgent result.

What does it taste like?
I'm used to the flavour of Raw Cacao, but having never tasted Aronia Berry before, I wasn't quite sure what the two combined would taste like. It's definitely more Aronia than Cacao which gives it a somewhat bitter and berry-ish edge, but it's palatable and the more I drink it, the more I've started to like it. I find that it works best with creamier plant milks such as Cashew, Coconut or Macadamia, and you could add a tiny bit of Honey or Agave to sweeten it if necessary.

Overall thoughts?
If you're looking for a new and different healthy start to your day, I think you'll love Viridian's Aronia & Cacao Frappé as it's a nice drink to alternate with the usual Turmeric Lattes and Green Juices to keep things interesting throughout the week. I've noticed that I've been feeling less tired since drinking it which is a massive bonus for a poor sleeper like myself, so if you suffer from fatigue, stress or are feeling run down, you may find this beneficial to your morning routine.

Viridian Aronia & Cacao Frappé* (30g, £30) is available from independent health food stores and online at viridian-nutrition.com

Health & Lifestyle: 5 Reasons Why You Should Add Aloe Vera Juice To Your Morning Routine

5 Reasons Why You Should Add Aloe Vera Juice To Your Morning Routine
Aloe Vera isn't just a trendy house plant that's loved by millennials the world over - this super succulent has been highly revered for its many health benefits for hundreds of years, and one of the easiest ways to reap its rewards is by drinking its juice.

I was lucky enough to never suffer from sunburn as a child (my mother was always extra vigilant when it came to the importance of sunscreen, to the point where I rarely stepped outside without being covered head to toe in the stuff), but I remember being at a young friend's birthday party during a particularly hot Summer one year and seeing a fellow playmate's skin go bright red in the sun. He screamed a lot and my friend's grandmother came out with this most unusual spikey looking green plant. She cut one of the spikes off, sliced it open, rubbed it onto the boy and much to my amazement, he immediately stopped crying. I remember thinking that it must have been made of magic!

Aloe Vera, of course, has been used to treat sunburns and skin irritations for a very long time and this widely available medicinal plant has no ends to its countless benefits, with more research in progress all the time. In recent years, Aloe Vera Juice has really hit it off as a health drink in the West, and if you've been curious as to why, here are just 5 ways that you can benefit from adding a little to your morning routine.

5 Reasons Why You Should Add Aloe Vera Juice To Your Morning Routine
1. Helps With Promoting Good Digestion
Gut health is currently in the news and for good reason, as a healthy gut can protect against numerous illnesses and diseases. Aloe Vera Juice can help to promote good digestion thanks to its natural anti-microbial properties which aid waste secretion and has an alkalising effect on the body. It basically gets you 'going' and cleanses the delicate digestive tract at the same time. This makes it particularly useful for those who suffer from IBS or constipation problems. A small word of warning though - make sure that you stick to the amounts on the bottle and don't overdo it as Aloe Vera Juice can cause laxative effects in some people.

2. Lowers Blood Sugar Levels
New research has started to show positive links between consuming Aloe Vera Juice and its ability to regulate and in some cases, actually lower blood sugar levels in the body which can prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Tests on both animals and humans have shown scientists that there are specific compounds in Aloe Vera which help the body to stabilise insulin production.

3. Boosts Natural Immunity and Circulation
If you're feeling run down or having a particularly busy week, drinking a shot of Aloe Vera Juice in the morning can give your immune system a helping hand due to its vitamin-rich profile and polysaccharides content. These enable the body to better fight off things like common colds and infections and also helps to boost your blood circulation.

4. Relieves Heartburn
Eaten too much or something that didn't quite agree with you? You can soothe some of the painful symptoms of heartburn by consuming a tablespoon of pure Aloe Vera Juice after a big meal. Researchers believe this is because of Aloe Vera's calming and alkaline effect on the stomach and digestive tract, which prevents the muscles connecting the oesophagus and stomach from contracting.

5. Soothes Eczema, Psoriasis and Skin Irritations
As I mentioned earlier, you can apply Aloe Vera topically to the skin and it'll soothe away any skin irritation from sunburn to psoriasis and eczema flare-ups. You can choose to use a dedicated topical gel or if you already have a bottle of pure Aloe Vera Juice in your fridge, you can pour some onto a cotton pad and press it directly onto any irritated areas for instant relief.

Fushi Organic Aloe Vera Juice review
Choose Certified Organic and Cold-Pressed
Due to the growing consumer demand for Aloe Vera Juice, you really need to choose your product carefully as some juices on the market contain as little as 1-5% Aloe Vera, so make sure that you read the label properly before buying. I always recommend looking out for certified organic produce when it comes to any health products/supplements that you're ingesting, and would highly recommend Fushi Pure Aloe Vera Juice which is 100% pureorganic, cold-pressed and unfiltered for the most natural and potent end result.

This juice is hand selected from mature, organically grown Aloe Vera plants, and extracted only from the inner leaf where the most nutrients are found, which ensures that it has a minimum content of 1700mg/ltr polysaccharides. Free from preservatives, it comes packaged in a recyclable glass bottle (yay no plastic!) and should be stored in the fridge after opening where it'll keep for up to three weeks. It has a much cleaner and fresher flavour than other brands that I've tried in the past, though Aloe Vera Juice can be something of an acquired taste so if you're not keen, it's easy to pop into your morning green juice or smoothie instead!

Fushi Pure Aloe Vera Juice Organic* (500ml, £11) is available from fushi.co.uk

Healthy Lifestyle: Comvita Olive Leaf Extract Immune Support & Vision Maintenance supplements review

Comvita Olive Leaf Extract Immune Support & Vision Maintenance supplements review
Looking for some new supplements to add to your daily routine to give your health a boost? These two from Comvita will help to support your immune system and keep your eyes in tip-top condition.

Comvita Olive Leaf Extract Immune Support supplements review
Comvita Olive Leaf Extract Immune Support* (60 capsules, £24.98, link)

Usually, you'd start to see immune supplements popping up on blogs before Winter, but for me, there's nothing worse than suffering from a Summer cold! Who wants to have a fever when it's boiling hot outside?! Keep those pesky colds and flu at bay with a daily high strength dose of Olive Leaf Extract, Copper and Zinc. Each soft gel capsule contains 66mg of Oleuropein (derived from Olive Leaf which is picked and harvested on Comvita's own farms in Queensland, Australia), plus 11 other naturally occurring polyphenols that creates a synergistic action that's more powerful than taking Oleuropein alone.

Olive Leaf Extract has been proven to be effective in helping to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides levels, as well as lowering blood pressure, which in turns lowers your risk of cardiovascular problems and boosts your overall health. In addition to the Olive Leaf Extract, these supplements also contain Copper and Zinc which are essential for maintaining a healthy, functioning immune system. I've been taking one a day since the start of June and so far haven't had any of the colds that have been going around, so I feel like this may be a long-term daily supplement for me. I'm curious to see if it will continue to work come Autumn/Winter - let me know if you take anything similar?

Comvita Vision Maintenance supplements review
Comvita Vision Maintenance* (30 capsules, £34.99, link)

Most of us take our eyesight for granted, but it's such a special part of our everyday experience with how we interact with the world, that I feel we should all be putting in a lot more effort than we do to protect our peepers. I've always had good eyesight until I hit my late 20s, and then I started to need glasses as I was struggling to see signs and objects in the distance. Although it's very common, it did make me realise how grateful I am to be able to see so I've been looking into what I can do to protect the health of my eyes for the years to come.

These Vision Maintenance supplements from Comvita tick all the boxes for me as I wanted something that was one-a-day and easy to swallow. They contain 50mg of Anthocyanins which are derived from New Zealand Blackcurrants, 10mg of Lutein and 2mg of Zeaxanthin that are extracted from Wild Marigolds, and 4.8mg of Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), all in one vegetarian capsule.

The combined natural formula helps to protect the delicate eye cells from oxidative stress which can damage their health in the long term, whilst in nature, Lutein and Zeaxanthin appear to absorb excess light energy to prevent damage to plants, particularly from high-energy light rays called blue light. These two substances are found in high concentrations in the macula of the human eye and there's been a lot of research into their benefits. Vitamin B2 is also an important component as it's an essential vitamin that the body needs every day as it helps to maintain normal vision.

On top of taking these supplements, I also make sure that I wear sunglasses in Summer (and on those cold but sunny days for the rest of the year) that have proper UV protection lenses as our eyes are ten times more sensitive to UV damage than our skin, so every little preventative measure helps!

What daily supplements do you take?
