Health & Lifestyle: ZOJO Beauty Elixirs Golden Adapto Latte - Turmeric Beauty Drink review

Tuesday, 30 March 2021

Turmeric lattes have been trendy for a while now, but if you're short on time or don't want to make your own, ZOJO have a luxury ready-made version just for you!

I first discovered Turmeric Lattes a few years ago when I was reading up on Ayurveda. This popular health drink has been widely used for centuries across Asia and is more commonly known as 'golden milk'. Traditional recipes mix a little turmeric powder with steamed cow's milk, along with other specially chosen spices and natural sweeteners for an instantly comforting and nourishing drink.

Nowadays, you're likely to see Turmeric Latte or Golden Milk popping up on the menus of artisanal coffee houses as a caffeine-free alternative, and the option to veganize it by using non-dairy milk is quickly overtaking its mainstream counterpart.

You can make your own Turmeric Latte at home (check out my recipe which is adapted from Jasmine Hemsley's East By West cookbook here), however, for those who are looking for a convenient ready-made version, look no further.

ZOYO Beauty Elixirs have created the Golden Adapto Latte, a Tumeric Beauty Drink full of healthy benefits for the skin and body.

What's it made of?
This award-winning drink is 100% vegan, cruelty-free, and free from gluten, lactose, preservatives and artificial sweeteners. The base is Organic Coconut Milk Powder, with Organic Turmeric, Organic Ceylon Cinnamon and Organic Black Pepper. There's also Organic Tapioca for a little added thickness and Organic Gum Acacia which acts as a natural stabilizer.

What are the health benefits?
Turmeric is world-famous for its natural anti-inflammatory properties and it's packed full of antioxidants to help fight free radicals. It's an amazing ingredient to support a healthy gut and liver function which offers better fat digestion too. The Black Pepper component allows the body to absorb the active Curcumin in the Turmeric so that you can reap all of these benefits in a bio-available format.

How To Use
Add a flat tablespoon (5g) to hot water and stir well. You can use a frother to whizz up more of a latte texture and add a little natural sweetener if desired.

Overall thoughts
Although this ready-made ZOJO Beauty Elixirs version is an expensive luxury, for those with the cash to splash, it's an ultra-convenient way to keep this healthy drink on hand in your cupboard and it takes seconds to make. The result was a little more watery than I perhaps had anticipated, so you may want to add a dash of non-dairy milk if you prefer your Turmeric Lattes to be more indulgent and 'creamy' in flavour. No amount of sweetener will make you like the flavour of Turmeric though, so I can appreciate that this is a love/hate it kinda thing for many people!

Health & Lifestyle: ZOJO Magic Cocoa review #VeganYogiPotion

Tuesday, 29 September 2020

Cardigan weather is officially here so why not make those chilly evenings even cosier with a mug of ZOJO Magic Cocoa? This healthy hot chocolate style drink is a nutritional winter-warmer in more ways than one.

I love discovering healthy alternatives to everyday luxuries and a steaming mug of hot cocoa is the ultimate comforting drink when the weather turns colder. Whilst I enjoy the sugary sweetness of a traditional hot chocolate with all the glorious whipped cream and marshmallow trimmings, I do prefer keeping them to a weekend treat, so when I discovered ZOJO Magic Cocoa, I thought it would be the ideal alternative to sip every day throughout autumn and winter.

For more ZOJO reviews, click here.

What is it?
ZOJO Magic Cocoa is a really healthy treat that's described as a 'vegan yogi potion' and as a 'high vibrations chillout cocoa with mushrooms'. To me and you, it's an extremely cocoa-rich infusion with three different types of mushroom extracts and the added bonus of Ashwagandha, one of the most popular and beneficial herbs that's been used in Ayurveda circles for centuries. Comprised of just these five potent and natural ingredients, there's no added sugar or anything else in the formula which makes it suitable for vegans.

The full ingredients are as follows, all of which are from organic farming:-
  • Cocoa Powder (70%)
  • Lion's Mane Mushrooms Powder (10%)
  • Maitake Mushrooms Powder (10%)
  • Reishi Mushrooms Powder (5%)
  • Ashwagandha Roots Powder (5%)

What are the health benefits?
Mushrooms have become a lot more popular and better researched over the years, and certain varieties are often used in supplements to boost health in a number of ways. Lion's Mane has been proven to be beneficial for supporting gut health in particular and has a host of antioxidant properties that are useful for maintaining a healthy heart and brain. Reishi is famed for its anti-inflammatory benefits and is a credible ingredient to boost your immune system with, whilst the slightly lesser-known Maitake is beneficial for balancing blood sugar levels.

My favourite Ayurvedic herb Ashwagandha is a fascinating adaptogen that works wonders on helping the brain and the body to reduce the damaging symptoms of stress by reducing cortisol levels, so if you suffer from depression and/or anxiety, I highly recommend looking into it. It's also useful for lowering blood sugar levels and it helps to improve memory abilities thanks to its antioxidant profile.

And then we have Cocoa Powder, when in its unadulterated state is packed full of polyphenols which improve blood flow to the brain, helping to boost your mood into a positive state. Cocoa Powder is well researched for being beneficial for lowering blood pressure, improving cholesterol levels and there are some interesting studies which show that it can help to keep your weight in check too.

How do I use it?
To try the ZOJO Magic Cocoa for yourself, just add two level tablespoons to hot water or hot milk/milk alternative. Stir well and enjoy. It can be drunk in the morning to give you an energy boost first thing, in the afternoon as a healthy-pick-me-up and also in the evenings to help calm your mind.

What does it taste like?
It tastes like a very rich, high-quality dark chocolate and I couldn't taste any of the other ingredients so don't worry if you don't like the flavour of mushrooms! As there's no sugar added, there is a sharp bitterness which personally I don't mind as I eat a lot of dark chocolate, but you can add a little sweetener to make it more palatable if needed - I'd recommend a little Agave syrup or a pinch of raw Coconut Sugar.

Overall thoughts?
At £29 for a large 150g glass jar, ZOJO Magic Cocoa is a vegan-friendly, organic and luxury elixir that will certainly appeal to the most health-conscious of us, and for me personally, the benefits are certainly worth the indulgent price tag. It truly takes a 'healthy cup of hot chocolate' to a whole new level!

Health & Lifestyle: ZOJO Beauty Elixirs - The Beauty Pageant Formula & The Supergreens Formula review

ZOJO Beauty Elixirs - The Beauty Pageant Formula & The Supergreens Formula review
If you're on the lookout for a high quality, organic food supplement that you can easily add to your breakfast smoothie every day, ZOJO's Beauty Elixirs will be right up your street.

I love it when I discover a new-to-me healthy lifestyle brand that not only looks good on the outside (that black and white packaging is very cool), but is filled with goodness on the inside too. After all, the very concept of most elixirs is all about beauty from within right?!

ZOJO was founded by Marta Ravensdale, a busy businesswoman and mother who was concerned about the negative impact that her often stressful lifestyle was having on her health, wellbeing and family life. Working with a team of experienced nutritionists from the UK, Marta created ZOJO, a range of plant-based beauty, fitness and health formulas made from 100% organic ingredients. There are currently seven different formulas which are suitable for vegans and all are GMO-free, lactose and gluten free, plus they don't contain any artificial nasties such as preservatives, colourings, artificial sweeteners, bulking agents, fillers or taste enhancers.

I was kindly sent ZOJO's The Beauty Pageant Formula and The Supergreens Formula to trial, and I've really been enjoying using them in my morning routine.

ZOJO Beauty Elixirs - The Beauty Pageant Formula review
ZOJO The Beauty Pageant Formula* (35g, £17, link)

Whether you're chasing an actual beauty queen crown or simply want your skin, hair and nails to look their best, The Beauty Pagent Formula is a delicious blend of eight organic ingredients. Carob provides essential vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, B2, B3, B6, Copper, Calcium, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium, Selenium and Zinc, whilst Lucuma is rich in beta-carotene, antioxidants, fibre and minerals such as Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphorus.

Camu Camu is an incredible superfruit which has one of the highest concentrations of Vitamin C of any food source recorded on the planet, and Cinnamon is included for its antioxidants that help to protect from free radical damage and slow down the ageing process. Elsewhere in the blend, there's Turmeric, well known in Ayurveda for its powerful properties that support a healthy liver and boost the digestion system; Ginger, another useful digestive aid for a healthy gut, and Blueberries which are packed full of antioxidants and are high in fibre, Vitamin C and Vitamin K.

How to use: Simply add a tsp (5g) to your favourite smoothie or a glass of juice and enjoy. It tastes sweet and fruity, with a little bit of a chocolatey flavour thanks to the Carob - one of the nicest powder food supplements that I've tried in a while!

ZOJO Beauty Elixirs - The Supergreens Formula review
ZOJO The Supergreens Formula* (35g, £17, link)

Food supplements that are based around super greens are incredibly popular and I have no doubt that this is likely to be one of ZOJO's bestsellers in their range. As the name suggests, this formula is a potent mix of powerful plant-based organic superfoods which include Psyllium Husk, Spirulina, Linseed, Wheatgrass, Baobab, Moringa and Chlorella. Each ingredient has been carefully selected for its unique health benefits and combined, this formula is ideal for those are looking to improve their gut health, are doing a detox or cleanse to remove excess heavy metals/toxins from their system, and it's particularly useful as a daily supplement for vegetarians and vegans because it's rich in vitamins and minerals, and also high in essential amino acids which supports healthy muscle  growth and maintenance.

How to use: Add a tsp (5g) to your morning smoothie or glass of juice. It certainly tastes better than similar supplements that I've tried in the past, but it is quite 'earthy' in flavour, so I'd recommend blending it in a green juice/smoothie or a mixed fruit/veg drink for the most palatable results.
